A few years ago, my wife and I spent the night in a very historic Lock House right there in Tring at Lock 42. We found it on Air BnB and we were served a sumptuous Full English breakfast in the morning. The host couple could not have been more friendly and welcoming. That morning we drove down to Blackwater Meadow Marina in Ellesmere to board an ABC Hire boat and sail up the Llangollen into Wales ! I sure am going to miss your channel Johnny, I very much hate to see you go. I wish you all the very best from Avondale, Arizona.
Hi Michael. wow what a fantastic trip you must have had, always good to start on a full English :) I've been "on the hoof" (CC'ing) for 6 years now, it's time for me to pass my windlass on, but I'm thinking over what I could still do on youtube. Best, Johny.
Hi Johnny, beautiful cruise. That swing bridge had me biting my tongue to keep from swearing 🤬. I'm glad you made it through safely. That thing is a health hazard. Hope you have a great week.
Hi Penney - I'm sure there was some blue air off camera for that one! It just needs a landing stage on the correct side, there is one bollard there but it's not much use on it's own.
Hi Jill, yes it was all good really but I do like the show the frustrations as well as the good bits. If I wasn't solo it wouldn't have been a problem of course.
[Heads up everybody: today's episode of Project Narrowboat may require use of a UK slang dictionary for anglophones (pootle! snicket!) 😉] You're very sneaky, Mr. London. That bridge might have put most sensible viewers off from solo narrowboating forever, I think, but your music selection of Sunshine on Sand by Unicorn Heads after your horrible ordeal made it all seem sooooo mellow & relaxed again that we all forgot just how utterly er, barmy (
Not easy those swing bridges on your own. When I see one coming I have to quickly work out which side to get off. I usually pick the wrong side. They change. Hard work. You've shown how hard it can be.
I was perplexed by that bridge last year. After going through I pulled it shut with a rope. Marsworth is a superb place to moor, particularly near the Red Lion pub. There are rings to tie to for a long stretch of path.
Yes I saw the rings and even comment on them in this weeks coming episode. Marsworth is cracking, love all the reservoirs. Last time I was there I did the Aylesbury arm.
That’s a good one to tick off. The reservoirs are really scenic I agree. I wanted to go down the Aylesbury arm but the CRT were working on the top lock last winter for ages.
/hi Vickie. Well, a few more in the pipeline then we'll see. Ideally I'd like to keep a youtube presence as I do enjoy the creativity of it, but everything is up in the air right now of course.
Very enjoyable vlog!!! that swing bridge is so awkward. Luckily for me a very nice chap offered to help me when i last passed that way. You were very good to make sure that it was closed behind you, take care mister.
I dont know why somebody hasn't sorted swing bridges out by now. There's a lot of boaters vlogs proving how impossible and dangerous they are to solo boaters. There are some that are driven by electric motor, but there still needs to be a landing both sides on the bridge side of the canal. Apart from that, thanks Johny for the vlog, always good to spend a bit of time with you, take care.
Hi Phillip, yes I've encountered a few problem ones over the years, it would surely be a simple task just to put a bit of landing stage where that bramble hedge is! Give a man a chance...
@@ProjectNarrowboat going to be Funny you not having the boat , you have done so much work on her , but you have new goals to look forward to , all the best ,🙃🍷
Hi Lynette - try doing them single handed! I was really spoiled on the Oxford, where those small locks are just such a breeze. I guess you came in at Brentford?
@@ProjectNarrowboat yes... came in on the tidal Thames last wed at 6am... hubby steering boat and i have been doing the locks!! Once past where you are a lot of the locks need to be emptied once through as lock walls are leaking so it takes time.... heading for Cowroast. R u on FB ? X
Hey Adam. a year or two ago a grew some lettuces in there. I usually do cucumbers as well, in bigger pots, and one or two other things, but this year it has fallen into disuse I'm afraid.
Hi Gary, It just needs a landing stage on the correct side, if they can't because they don't own the land, I wonder why didn't they build it to operate the other way around. Oh well. Hey I'm not done yet....

That swinge bridge so annoying but you did it. Great scenery. Thanks for taking us along with you.
Hi Caroline, yes annoying indeed. Took about half an hour in real time I should think. The scenery rarely disappoints.
Thank God that swing bridge is now behind you!! Hopefully you were able to just enjoy the rest of the day - and the sun stayed with you. Take care.

I walked along there tody took the nephews fishing Marsworth ,loverly little Stretch of water ,,never caught anything 😂👍👍
Hi Tony yes it's a cracking neck of the woods. I think I must have caught all the fish in my tyres.
Swing and lift bridges are a thing nightmares are made of.
Dukes Cut on the Oxford canal, I'm not heavy enough to draw the thing down!
Hey Martin. Yes, a few bad ones on the Oxford that's for sure!
Thanks for yet another enjoyable video JL, that swing bridge was a real hassle, but lovely cruise and scenery, stay safe and well 🚢🚢🚢
Hey Chris. And that was just the edited highlights of the bridge - it was a lengthy old procedure.
Well that one wore me out ! Well done you. Nice music x
And me! It took a long time and a lot of frustration.

Cheers Bill. Got there in the end.
I am so glad you are still cruising. I love your commentary and your humor :-) That bloody bridge, though :/
With a bridge like that, you just gotta have a sense of humour!
Very enjoyable vlog!!! that swing bridge is so awkward. Luckily for me a very nice chap offered to help me when i last passed that way. You were very good to make sure that it was closed behind you, take care mister.
Hi Geoffrey, I thought I'd better show footage that it was properly closed after! Unfortunately for me no one was around when I was there!

Hi Dan. Hopefully I'll see it one day... but going the other way!
Hello... hoping u r well... have just passed your boat today as we move ours up the GU from the Thames.... crikey these double locks are not easy!! Xx

So I still need to know what’s the purpose of the tray of plastic plant pots on the roof, what purpose does it serve ??

Good effort with the bridge Johnny, but what a poor design for single handed boaters. I'm going to miss your travels.

you shold hawe draged the bridge open with youre boat then left it opened an care less. not youre problem for the nex person to X.
It's on a fairly well used path for pedestrians, so I wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone.
