  • How do you go about choreographing a dance sequence for a character who has never danced before? That was the challenge in this moment from “Poor Things,” which stars Emma Stone as a woman with the mind of a baby who, moment by moment, begins to find her footing.
In this scene, Bella Baxter (Stone) is at dinner with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), her beau of sorts. As she hears the beat of the music and sees others dancing, Bella’s body begins to instinctively move. Suddenly, she’s on the dance floor herself, doing moves she seems to be inventing that are both oddball and intriguing.
“The dance, because she’s doing it for the first time, just felt like it should be something quite primitive, slightly babylike,” the film’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, said in an interview.
He collaborated with the choreographer Constanza Macras, with whom he also worked on “The Favourite,” to create the right mix of synergy and chaos in the movement.
Lanthimos said that he and the cinematographer Robbie Ryan used a wide-angle lens on a camera mounted on a large metal dolly as they followed the stars. Not only did the movements need to be choreographed, but the cast also had to dance around the roving camera in a way that ensured nobody got hurt.

I was so enchanted by that scene, because it reminded me so much of my best friend‘s 16-months-old, who had just learned walking. When he hears music, his body starts twitching uncontrollably to the rhythm. So cute!
Emma Stone captured that very well. 😊

@@hinhwood1629 I mentioned these two films for their female leading performances. And all three of them, including Stone of course, were nominated in the Best Actress category.
Sandra Huller gave an EXCELLENT performance in Anatomy of a Fall. It may not be as IMPRESSIVE as Stone's, it was of course a more dramatic performance, but just because it wasn't "unusual" and "weird" doesn't mean it was less good. I don't think that Stone would be as good as Huller if she had played that role. Sometimes, the more "simple" performances are more difficult. But of course, she has very few chances to win, next to Stone.
As for Lily Gladstone, who was good too, she may have given the less impressive performance comparing to these two, but she's a serious threat to Stone, mostly because of her race. Oscars are also "politics". And in almost 100 years of Oscars, no Native American has ever won an Oscar. This is a VERY good chance.
So, word of advice, don't bet all your money to Stone. ;)
p.s.: And, another minus for Stone, is, ironically, that she has already won before... If she hadn't won, she would have more chances now.

It's a few days since I watched this movie. Every day I think of it. The more I revisit it the more I marvel at it. Yorgos is such a great director and these 2 such great actors, making this movie such a splendor. Cannot wait to give it some time, so that I can rewatch it (this time with little pot to shift perception).

A 'neat' contemporary-dance (perchance) 'precedent' (video-short) would be 'To Get Her' (by 'Jukstapoz Dance Co.') from a decade-or-so back (esp. mid-way thru).
