    Man, the guitar sound of this Tombstoner album!!!
    This is exactly how i want a guitar to sound like, dirty enough to give you a stankface, still clear enough that you can hear what it does without having to concentrate even a bit.
    In this sense I am indeed reminded of Conan, totally different style of music, confessed, but another band where just the guitar sound was enough to make me fall in love with them.
    My Death Metal album of the year so far.

      Necrotic Nick- Yeah, it's flat out vicious sounding. I like that fact it's thick but has an almost thrashy crunch to it. There's been a lot of killer death metal that's come out this year so that's a tough call for me but this is quality for sure.

    I really got into Queen about 9 to 10 years ago. Ended up collecting all their studio albums; after having been just on the hits albums. Their 70s stuff flat out rules and those first 3 albums are full of proto metal stuff IMO. Brighton Rock is probably heavier than Stone Cold Crazy, though I can understand why it never gets covered. Nobody can sing like Freddie, lol! March of the Black Queen, Father to Son and frankly all of Queen II is badass. The first album has stuff thst was clearly inspired by Sabbath and Zeppelin. Thanks Nick, as always 🤘

    Queen is one of those bands when I was a kid, I didn't get it or understand it. I was into Type O Negative, Nine Inch Nails and so forth but as I got older. I realized, they were pretty damn good and I appreciated them for actually putting out good Rock music

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal Месяц назад +1

      Necrotic Nick- My ma played a lot of Queen (among other great bands) and I guess since my ma listened to a lot of prog I was able to latch on to Queen a bit easier since some of the prog stuff was a lot to absorb. Even when I got heavy into all those killer 90's bands like you mentioned I came back to the classics pretty often.

    • @DinoSoGreat5000
      @DinoSoGreat5000 Месяц назад +1

      @thrallsofmetal I honestly didn't get into prog stuff until the mid-2000s with bands like Symphony X, Stratovarius and Opeth among other bands as I was expanding my taste in Metal. But as I reached my 30s and now being 40, I learned and realized the importance and the absolute quality of a good classic rock band and garnered a complete appreciation for bands like Queen and Deep Purple and even Depeche Mode

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal Месяц назад

      Necrotic Nick- My ma subjected me to a ton of Yes, Rush, Genesis and Jethro Tull as a kid so that stuff became kind of the bedrock of my prog listening so when I found bands like Dream Theater and Opeth it felt like a natural transition since I had been big into metal by the time I checked them out. As I get older I definitely find myself going back to a lot of classic rock just as a break from all the metal I listen to. I'm a huge Depeche Mode fan too.

    I really fell completely in love with that Stygian Crown album; Bolt Thrower riffs combined with epic doom metal and vocals that remind me of a female version of Rob Lowe from Solitude Aeturnus.. 👌❤️

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal Месяц назад +1

      Necrotic Nick- It's a solid album. Great heavy as hell riffs but they really capture that epically forlorn vibe. I got huge Solitude Aeturnus vibes and a lot of that was due to the vocals. She sounds more ghostly than Lowe but it really works. We're definitely covering that new Ulcerate when it drops.

    I believe it was you that introduced me to Tombstoner and that's why I was surprised you didn't review that one. But I absolutely loved that debut album. I mostly agree with your analysis on the new album but I do think it's a slight step down from the previous one. But I haven't relistened to it since my initial listen. I think it's currently my lowest ranked DM album on my 2024 Metalstorm list too. But, I will say, that's only because I'm still yet to hear a DM album this year that's any less than a 7.
    Also, imma need that Bolt Thrower shirt

      Necrotic Nick- It was one of those we just didn't have time to review with all the releases coming out at the time but there was no way I wasn't going to cover it in one form or another. I don't know if I'd call it a step down from the last one but it is different. It's way more aggressive, fast and straight forward and to me has a real Floridian death metal vibe this time which I always love. Yeah, I may or may not choose to be buried in all my Bolt Thrower shirts lol

    I really dig the Dvne and Tombstoner albums. Stygian Crown I remember were nicknamed Candle Thrower, due to their mix of Candlemass style Doom and Bolt Thrower heft, and while the reality isn't quite as awesome as that sounds, both of their albums are pretty good, especially the latest one!

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal Месяц назад +1

      Necrotic Nick- I was stoked to go over both of those. While I don't think Dvne beat their amazing debut that new one is solid as hell and Tombstoner just went all out on that new one and may have made their heaviest album yet. I can hear more of the Candlemass in Stygian Crown but there's a few moments on there that definitely had that Bolt Thrower groove to it. I got more Sacrilege than Bolt Thrower honestly.

    WIth regards to Queen, Nick, I know Jammin John loves talking about production and drums. How things sound in the mix etc. I'm curious from another Priest and Queen fan, I wonder if you guys notice how the drums in A Kind of Magic really, really sound like what you hear in Ram it Down and Painkiller. Not the drumming itself, how its mic'd and sits in the mix, especially the bass drum. Bands take from other bands, not just musically, but sonically as well. I don't know if it was intentional, and I'm not trying to say that it's copied in anyway, shape or form. But listen to Princes of the Universe and GImme the Prize and tell me the production doesn't sound like RID and Painkillers...lol.

    Bro!!!!!!! Sheer Heart Attack! The best Queen album, imo. Queen is a band that, while their catalog is extensive, there isn't too many albums you can put in and hit play from them. Both of the ones you picked are that way, but especially SHA. The Freddie Mercury love fest didn't develop (rightfully so) yet and all the band members back then just effing cranked. SHA is a solid one from first to last. Queen at their absolute finest, IMO. Brighton rock especially. May is a God and is on the same level as all the old greats from his era. If anyone watching this doesn't own SHA, buy it immediately and look at when it was made.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal Месяц назад +1

      Necrotic Nick- That one might be my favorite. It's hard to say since there seems to be Queen album for every mood since they were so eclectic. Sheer Heart Attack just brings the riffs and the hooks. They songs are as infectious as they are well written. It's proof that catchy rock songs can also be wildly creative with the songwriting without losing that sense of a good earworm.

      @@thrallsofmetal Spot on about the favourite/best. That band can do anything they wanted, from any genre. The only other band/artist that diverse is Prince. What I love about Queen is they're "fun good time" stuff. They can have an absolute blast melting your face off. SHA encapsulates that. Good stuff bro, cant wait for the proto metal segment on the metal/not metal, they'd be on it for sure.

    Hey Nick, I'm surprised I haven't asked this in the 4 years I've been subscribed, but there we go: How do you keep your listening varied with such a vast collection? As my collection increases - and it's got nothing on yours - I find myself listening to an increasingly narrow section or sections of it. I just got back from Fortress black metal festival here in the UK. Some fantastic bands on there: Regarde Les Hommes Tomber; Sunken; Blood Countess; Domhain; Wolves in the Throne Room; Gaerea; Blackbraid; Vemod; Triptykon; Thy Light and loads more. Definitely check out. Some of them (Sunken; Blood Countess; Domhain; Vemod) were totally new to me and reckon you'll dig them. J

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal Месяц назад +1

      Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I find as I get older my listening has broadened a bit and while it's predominately metal I listen to the more stuff outside of that I listen to keep metal fresh for me. I'll go through phases of just listening to punk, industrial, classic rock, prog etc. and then come back to the metal with fresh ears. Getting some actual Queen albums has been long overdue for me. Expect to see some more in the future for sure.
