We’re in Sendai in northern Japan to experience one of Japan’s most famous festivals, Sendai Tanabata Matsuri (star festival). Sendai’s Tanabata festival is one of Tohoku region’s “Top 3 Festivals”, alongside Akita’s Kanto Matsuri and Aomori’s Nebuta Matsuri, and it is the biggest Tanabata festival in all of Japan, attracting 2 million people in the space of two days!

📍 SENDAI TANABATA MATSURI
(仙台七夕まつり) is held every year between August 6-8 and now features a firework display in Nishi Park on the evening of August 5 too! See the Tanabata “Fukinagashi" decorations (streamers) throughout the city and along the shopping arcades (Ichibancho and Chuo shopping arcades) stretching from Sendai Station to Kotodai Park from 10AM on August 6.
What to eat: Japanese Festival Street Food
If you visit Japan during festival season, you are bound to find dozens of street food stalls with endless choices making it difficult to pick just one (or two!) snacks to try! Here’s what we ate at Sendai Tanabata Matsuri 2023 to help you decide:
🥢くるくるお好み焼き “Okonomiyaki” (Japanese savoury pancakes) on a stick! What better way to enjoy the festivities than things on sticks? And what better way to taste one of Japan’s favourite dishes than at a festival? This okonomiyaki had a delightfully springy texture to keep it on the stick, and the iconic umami flavour of Osaka-style okonomiyaki any Japan fan will know and love!
🍧かき氷 or “Kakigori” (shaved ice) is a must-eat festival food to cool you down during summer in Japan! We tried ブルーハワイ “Blue Hawaii” flavour for its iconic blue syrup! Blue Hawaii is one of Japan’s favourite shaved ice flavours, but this top-selling festival season snack has a flavour that just can’t be described! Some liken it to Ramune soda or citrus, but the best way to find out is to try it for yourself to experience an authentic taste of Japanese summer!
👅 牛タン or “gyutan” is the most famous delicacy in Sendai City in Miyagi, Japan. It literally translates as “beef tongue”, but it is much more than just a cow tongue! Gyutan is synonymous with Sendai City, and you will find “tan” food stalls almost anywhere you go during the Tanabata festival! If you visit Sendai, you must try this Sendai street food!

次回来られたら、地元民に愛されてるユニークなラーメン「仙台っ子らーめん」にチャレンジしてほしい。豚骨醤油スープがクセになります。
いつもなら、七夕の期間は曇天かどこかで雨なんだけど
今年は珍しく全日程晴れでしたね。
吹き流しの長さも通年通りの長さになって、更に圧巻だったでしょうね。
ちなみに、飾りは個人や企業だけで作ってるとこもあるけど、ほとんどが専門の業者に頼んで作ってます。
宮城は、通年通して色んなイベントあるので楽しめますよ。
行った事はありませんが大規模な祭りですね。吹き流しの壮大さに驚きました。コンテストに一役買ったのがおかしかった。それにしても一年一回の祭りのために費やされる労力はすごい。祭りにつきものの屋台を満喫して最高の旅となりましたね。
奥さんテイラースウィフトに似てて美人ですねえ☺️仙台来てたならお会いしたかった😂
青森「ねぶた祭」、秋田「竿燈まつり」、山形「花笠まつり」、仙台「七夕まつり」は東北四大祭りと呼ばれています。4つの祭りすべてを回るツアーもあります。
織姫星はこと座のベガ、彦星はわし座のアルタイルという名前で呼ばれています。この二つは、天の川をはさんで向かい合うように位置しています。
七夕の写真を撮っていると、吹流しの中、お二人とすれ違ったのでご挨拶してスナップ写真を撮らせて頂きました(笑顔一杯の素晴らしい表情の画像です) 3日間で226万人の人出でした、暑かったですね～

After I was able to take a long vacation, my husband and I talked about going to festivals in Tohoku and Hokkaido. As expected, Sendai's Tanabata 🎋 is completely different. It is very beautiful and each piece is carefully finished.
Tohoku's festivals are unmatched! Seeing Sendai's Tanabata and Aomori's Nebuta festival was a dream come true! I hope I can see Akita's Kanto festival next year and I hope you can see them all too! 🥰

解説のおかげで忘れていた、子供の頃に読んだ七夕の物語を思い出しました。
仙台に来てくださってありがとうございます😊楽しんでいただけて嬉しいです‼︎秋にははらこ飯や金華鯖や新米に新酒、女川の秋刀魚も美味しいですが牡蠣は広島に負けじ劣らずブリっブリのでっかい身を頬張れますよ。冬の光のページェントは最後あたりの公園の通り、青葉通りと言う道路が果てしなく光に包まれるので、七夕に負けず圧巻です。もしまやタイミングがありましたら是非😊次は東京などには出店してない牛タンの閣をおすすめします。牛タンのたたきはタンとは思えないとろけ具合です😊

吹き流しが和紙で作られているのが、仙台七夕の特徴です。この後、吹き流しはブラジルなどの海外に寄贈されます。仙台のお好み焼きとどんどん焼きが、山形のどんどん焼きの基となっています。

私も仙台が地元。今は東京に10年間単身赴任してるけど、今年は久しぶりに七夕観に行ってました。もしかしたら同じ日だったのかな？
前夜祭の花火や七夕飾り、牛タンなどを楽しんで頂いたようで嬉しく思いました。仙台はまだまだ楽しいイベントがあるのでまた来てください。

本当の仙台七夕の醍醐味は「腰の高さまで長い吹き流し（ひらひらした長い紙の部分）」を暖簾をくぐるようにして、手でかき分けて前に進むことだった。
一歩通行でないのでお互いにぶつかってしまうことも…しかし、それが昔は若い男女の出会いにつながっていたんですよ(^_-)-☆
30年前に観光客が吹き流しを引っ張って壊してしまうので、裾を切ってしまって、触ることすら禁止になっちゃったんですけどね…(=_=)

I’d love to visit Sendai but I’m just absolutely terrified of Mr Blobby. There have been numerous sightings of him there this year and I can say first hand that I saw him push Noel

正直ラーメン自体はそんなんでもない
でもあの辛味噌の美味さは異常
おかわり自由のご飯にあの辛味噌を少し乗っけて好きなだけ食いまくれるのが最高

昔は平塚の七夕で使われ入賞した飾りを仙台七夕にも使われると云っていたけど今でもそうなのかな？
