Yep. You could tell that Magic wanted to pass the ball to Larry EVERY time lol. BIG respect there. Imagine if Larry and Magic (and a decent supporting cast) played together? They'd win a title every year. No joke.
Professional basketball will never be as great as it was when Bird and Magic were playing. It just never will be. They were a once in a lifetime gift from the basketball gods…
6:59 is a nice example of Bird's legendary court awareness and smoothness under duress...people always used to and sometimes still do say that Bird 'wasn't athletic' because of average speed and leaping ability, but Phil Jackson said Bird had maybe the best hand-eye coordination the game's ever seen...and you can run and jump all day without good hand-eye, and it means nothing
***** Bird certainly made the most out of what he had. What he lacked was really just good footspeed, which made him somewhat vulnerable in guarding people in space, yet he was an excellent interior and team defender. He was 6'9", so the lack of good leaping ability hampered him less. Bird actually had average hops and speed, and wasn't bolted to the floor as is popular to say. His second most famous play, the one against Houston in the Finals where he follows his shot...that's not a guy who can't jump Statistically, Bird is one of the more well-rounded players of all-time I don't think Bird was the greatest ever, but he belongs in any discussion of ATG's. At his peak, Bird dominated the NBA and prime Bird would dominate in any era due to his toughness, work ethic and fundamental soundness. He would eat this current league alive after a brief period of adjustment and fine-paying. If he shoots the lights out in a hand-check, rough-and-tumble league that was tougher on offense, at least on the offense side...he crushes.
+Joe Johnson that was Bobby Knight, another great basketball mind, that said that Bird had maybe the greatest hand-eye coordination the game's ever seen, not Phil Jackson
+HPM Royale the reason I have to go with MJ over Bird is that, like Bird, MJ was fundamentally sound, vicious competitor, never quit, and was super clutch...but because of insane physical gifts, Mj could do things Bird could not...however, I am not an idiot who says MJ was better in the 80's--and neither was MJ, who said, 'I had to learn what it takes to win in this league from guys guys like Bird and Magic'...80's mike had lessons to learn, and Bird, 23-11 vs MJ, was one of his teachers as far as team player...I don't think it's possible to be a better team player than Bird...but 10 scoring titles in a row, and 6 rings, all without a top shelf center, and the clutch performances, plus being a top tier defender, one of the very best, is hard to ignore. Larry gets a bum rap and was actually a good defender[2nd team all-defense a couple times], but MJ far outstrips him there,,,and defense is an important part of the game. Bird did some things better than Jordan, shoot, pass, rebound...but they played different positions, and a PF and SF[Bird played PF for four years while Cornbread Maxwell played SF before the evolution of McHale] is supposed to grab more boards than a shooting guard]...so while Bird was better at these things by a little over MJ, MJ was a much better defender, capable of shutting down top players[and yes, Jordan didn't always play the other teams best because they had Pippen, but they did this to rest him for offense, I believe] Bird is still my favorite player tho.
Oh absolutely Bird's hand eye was the best I've seen, but then his mental game and court awareness was the best anyone's ever seen. And then to think, he can shoot as good as he can pass, who could do that?
Bird and Magic combine the speed of how fast they pass and see the players are freaking insane...Considering Larry is not that he can keep up with Magic, Magic can see all the tricky passes that Bird did.. just crazy good
sorry bad grammar. what I mean was considering Larry is not that athletic and can keep up with Magics quick thinking. and magic can also see all the tricky passes that Bird did..just crazy good
Bon Bal I agree that Magic's more athletic, but Bird was widely known for his quick thinking even more so than Magic. Commentators always said that it seemed like Bird was playing chess while everybody else was playing checkers. Magic just had more control over the offense b/c he had the ball in his hands for most of the time.
oh I agree, in terms of quick thinking of every aspect of the game Larry is the Boss. To me when it comes to fast break even in todays game no body can match Magics quick thinking and decision when he has the ball. Larry run an outstanding fast break but he is a forward, so either he catch it and pass it on or catch it to shoot or run with it and pass it out. so he as three choices, but Magic has two ways it is either to pass or a drive, as a defender you expect this, but the way he pass is also another problem. by the way Larry is my favorite out of the two but I have to respect and recognize Magic fast break game the guy is flat out scary.
Bird would have been an excellent addition to the showtime Lakers and Magic would have been an invaluable point guard in the 80s Celtics. I wish there was more footage of them playing together
