Your channel is what made me want a Tokay. So many people just write them off as "display reptiles." But you actually show these helpful videos with an optimistic view! 👌

Speechless. I just got one, and I'm trying to get him familiarized with my voice first when I tongue feed him, but for sure, I will try this way. I just need to be patient with him

This is one of the best tokay handleing vids I've seen, it being short & straight forward was great
Super stoked if you (did) make a more in depth vid!

Its really awesome to see someone FINALLY making a video against the stigma surrounding these guys. It always really upset me to see that the large majority of tokay videos out there are calling them the devil and saying how nasty they are. Lechianus geckos are SUPER popular and they dont get stigmatized for their cage aggression! They also deliver a much worse bite! These creatures are beautiful and are just scared! I got into them also because of the stigma and hope to be able to use them in educational programs to help tear down this idea.

I have a veiled chameleon and he is still a lil pissy, but I’ve calmed him down a good bit from when I got him. He used to be SOOOO defensive. Sometimes he will do that angry lizard head but hissy thing and he’s gets angry. So I back off a bit. Not fully. I keep hand near him until he calms down. Then I start moving closer to him. Eventually I’ll move closer to his chin and nose and head. Just slightly rub. Kind of like you did to the tokays back. Eventually, I’ll move my hand under him and lightly tap/rub his tail. It helps get him moving. Then, he’ll slowly move onto my hand. Then I slowly (emphasis on the SLOWLY) move my other hand on top of him while I remove him from the cage. My cage is very big 3’x3’x5.5’. So I need to keep his tail in a position so he doesn’t latch onto anything while I’m trying to get him out. With the same hand, I sort of “cover” his eyes. I really just put the tips of my finger near his head and this causes him to close his eyes, which calms him down. Now I have him out of the cage. (I really only ever take him out if it’s a warm sunny day outside and I think he would like to bask in it (he loves the outdoors), or id he needs a shed bath or if I’m cleaning the cage.) Anyways, now that he’s out, I take advantage of his love of heights and how being up high makes him feel safe (because he’s an arboreal lizard that live high up in trees) and I’ve built him a little jungle gym type thing above his cage close to the ceiling that I can just place him on and forget about him for a lil while while I clean his cage. This took a long time and again, he’s still pissy when I try to get to him, but he will calm down and eventually understand that I’m not going to go away no matter how pissy he gets. Also, if your lizard lunges at you, don’t flinch! It scares them even more. Just stay calm and talk in a soothing voice. I’ve found a big part of getting a reptile to not be afraid of you or your hand is just confidence. Standing your ground. Not in a mean way, but just to show the reptile that you aren’t going to hurt it, but you also aren’t going away.

You have a beautiful Tokay with a badass name! I got a Tokay because they're truly stunning too look at, but also for the challenge and it's paid off!
I have a nice sweet little demon... ninety nine percent of the time anyway ;P

Good video! Glad I watched this, I'm getting three wild caught and was going to screw up and start off with a glove. The problem seems to be with most Tokay videos I see is the person has no patience and doesn't know when the gecko has had enough and just leave it in peace for a while. Patience and repetition definitely the way to go.

A common geko socialization is to lick the nose. If you rub their noses it helps calm them and will make them lick your fingers. This socialization also proves to me they CAN enjoy your company. Social animals like tokays are ones that can actually show affection. There are a few cues they can give you to how much they like your presence.
I've seen them request to get out of cages etc. They seem to be a bit smarter then your average reptile.

Thanks for sharing your experience with tokay handling!
The vid is very good, although in my opinion handling with one hand is impossible! :) The camera is also something that gets in the way, I mean, the geckos notice the new "eye" staring at them, so they behave differently when we are recording. :)
You went from handling from newbies to fully tamed geckonia at 6:03! I believe this way of picking them is, like, the ultimate, full-grown tamed gecko, because being held like that is completely against its nature. That's actually how a predator would hold them to eat. :)

What age were you able too visually tell and hear the call of Gigan too tell his sex?
I've had my Tokay pretty much since it was born for just under a year now.
Cheers man and look forward too more of your content!!

A Filthy Degenerate surprisingly I’ve only heard his call twice since I have been owning them for about a year now. I didn’t really go for visual cues, I sexed them from feeling the pores. Males secrete a waxy substance from their pores, and as he grew he developed a bulkier head

Really have been enjoying your videos. There isn't much good info out there about geckos other than cresties especially tokays. Just fyi your intro sound is so loud and then your audio during the video is much lower. Like your intro kills my ears because I definitely wasn't expecting it to be that loud. Maybe thats something that you can try to fix on upcoming videos? FYI Kevin from nerd actually works with tokays a lot. I know he has older videos on them but not recently. I've watched so many of his videos. He definitely has a great way to work with animals that others don't do. Have a great day!

Danielle B. Thanks for the feedback! I actually don’t think I’ll be doing videos in the future, but if I do, I double check my audio. I know Kevin works with them, he just doesn’t talk about them like he used to in the past. Which is a shame!

Dont tame the gecko or hold them. tokays should be strong and wild and fierce.

    • @manaandgeckos2122
      @manaandgeckos2122  4 года назад +1

andy the gardener that’s your opinion. These are still wild animals that co-exist peacefully with me in my home. That doesn’t take away from their fierceness.
