  • It is time for my final review of the Fermzilla after much testing.
    I have tested it in every way that it can be used and I feel that I have found its pros and cons during this time.
    This video is set out to explain all of this in balance so that people can take a fully informed look and add this into their own consideration.
    I hope this video gives you all the information you are looking for when combined with all the information contained in my previous preview video.
    If, after watching both of these videos you have any questions then do let me know.
    Feedback is always appreciated.

    Great review David! I made the mistake of testing and cleaning my unit at my wort was chilling, which lead to a very stressful 30 minutes, as I found a small leak. As you did, I would advise everyone to clean and test prior to using. It will also give you a better feel for how the vessel works. I'm only a few batches in and love the Fermzilla. My pressure kit just arrived, and I can't wait to try a pressurized fermentation for a lager. I look forward to your future videos and reviews. Cheers!

    I am using this unit constantly to make pressure fermented lager in 12-14 days, once the first was done and the cleaning and other nuances are learned i find it quick and hassle free to produce 25l of lager every 2 weeks (you could turn the fermenter around in 8 days to start another if req) with amazing results. I use a 1 litre plastic bottle with a carbonation cap to do a gelatin solution transfer directly into the fermenter whilst cold crashing and this gives me better clarity in the keg. Great informative vids,keep them coming. PS I don't mind your delivery...:)

    I always enjoy your reviews and what you say about this product is pretty much spot on if you follow the instructions.
    I've been using my 27l fermzilla for 2 years now. I've not had any major issues but as I rarely use the dump valve I think it's something I could do without.
    I'm in the UK and after 2 years I decided to look for a replacement 27 l tank. There seems very little stock of spare parts in the UK.
    I did think about getting an all rounder tank but kegland say it wouldn't be a very good fit on the stand that I got with my fermzilla.
    Also I do prefer the conical shape, it's a shame kegland don't do the 27 l tank without the hole in the bottom for the dump valve. Something like their competitors snub nose fermenter! 🍻

I purchased a FermZilla and using the FermZilla Jacket & brew belt, just about held a temp of 20c in a very cold garage. I did not notice any side effects on the plastic, though maybe long term use might be something to consider. Just thought i'd share. Looking forward to next video.

      @@DavidHeathHomebrew I have been using mine under pressure with a heat belt and it has been fine in a garage @9DegC. The instructions say don't use cleaning with over 50 DegC so I took that as the limit. If the heat belt was in the wort region I would have thought it was ok. They usually tell you not to use heat because if not; some people will go and stick a burner under it!...Have had some issues with tiny pressure leaks that take 10 hours to loose pressure so usually too hard to find but otherwise love this thing. I too love to see the wort fermenting.

I've been leery about using plastic ever since I upgraded from buckets to glass and stainless, but having a dump-valved unitank at this price point is just too good to pass up. I suppose with a gas post in the bottom container I could hook up a stone and make oxygenating wort and carbonating a little easier to boot. I might even give pressurized fermentation a try. Mine didn't come with any instructions. I made some minor mistakes, corrected with the help of RUclips. I don't find it easy to keep gas-tight and dismantling it on your own is a nightmare if there is any water or lube on the surface. A good tip from a RUclipsr is to put some split tube on the rods that support the vessel in the stand. I also put some on the stand handles as they cut into your hands if you move the assembly when the vessel is full.

    Hi David, like you, I am very excited about the new Fermzilla 27litre - I have just bought one. I wondered about your experience of using it for dry hopping. Unscrewing the bottom pot with all that wort spilling out...mess everywhere?! Is there a better way? And does the purging really work? Does the oxygen actually get pushed out? How much CO2 do you need to use? And what about the hops? The usual advice is to weigh them down to keep them on the bottom of the fermenter - does that still apply or just let them float free...Perhaps, I should simply bag them as before, with marble, fill bottom pot to brim with water and re-attach? Keen to hear your thoughts and many thanks once more for your videos.

    Again a great video, thanks David.
    Point 11 of the FZ instructions states that the butterfly valve must always be open during fermentation but does not explain the reason. In addition, the bottom jar I think I read that it has trouble maintaining pressure.
    Curiously, the FZ manual dated 1/20/2018 downloaded from the Kegland website some time ago does not mention this point but in the last update they have corrected it.
    What is your opinion and experience on this?
    Have you used the open butterfly valve in your testing? Or does this aspect really not matter?
    I have tried FZ recently only in 2 pressure fermentation and in my opinion it is a very good product and I am frankly happy with the product.

    Thanks for the information 👍🏻😊 One question? How can it be that headspace above 8% gives off flavors, when the fermzilla is filled with CO2 ?

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  4 года назад +1

      Thank you Dorthe. It is not off flavours as such, it is simply about optimal volume levels for the best flavour results. I have completed much testing on this myself with other home equipment and the Fermzilla and the difference in results have been very noticeable. Try it and I am sure that you will see what I mean :)

      Great question. I usually brew 12l batches and was about to buy a Fermzilla then re- watched this video; I am glad I did. Based on your experience David would 12l batch sizes (my standard brew length) fermented under pressure in the Fermzilla still be drinkable and palatable to the average homebrewer like myself? I appreciate that is a tricky question. I could accept SOME trade-off in terms of flavour for the convenience of pressure transfer, ability to avoid oxidation, ferment faster, ferment at higher temps. and produce lagers etc. but certainly not if you would end up with totally rubbish beer. Are there any sources of basic technical information about optimal headspace under pressure fermentation as a reasonably deep Google search did not provide any useful results? Many thanks for the great vid.

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  4 года назад

      Thanks Tim. There are a great deal of variables here but the results that I have had with smaller batches under pressure have not been as pleasing as larger batches of the same beer.

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew

      No but all you will need is something protective between the heat belt and fermzilla. So that can be a strip of material that can handle the heat.

      Because at this amount of pressure your yeast will die :) You will need to use pressures under 1 bar. 0.82 bar is common or maybe a little higher.

      Hi Phil, I have used it 3 times so far. I have not any issues with it but made a round up video covering the wide range of these vessels instead of releasing lots of similar product videos on the channel. Personally, when it comes to pressure fermentation I mostly use the stainless steel Kegmenter. It is pretty much in some ways a SS version of the all rounder. Simple to use and effective.

    • @philcross6037
      @philcross6037 4 года назад +1

      @@DavidHeathHomebrew I like the simplicity and the cleaning but the tube for pressure transfer in the bottom hangs below the float and reaches the trub with 3l of good beer above it. I used a high floculation yeast so could tilt the unit whilst transferring without the sediment moving but otherwise I would be left with a lot of good beer in the bottom. Am I missing something?

    How did you find dry hopping from the bottom jar? How much does the fermenting under pressure effect taking gravity readings?

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  4 года назад +1

      Yes, nice and easy. Great that you can keep things oxygen free. I did that they rise to the top fast. Giving the fermenter a gentle shake allows them to drop again, as will a cold crash. I've been using a tilt hydrometer personally. Seems unaffected by pressure, just the usual things. I need to try the Plaato also.
