  • Used Young Indiana Jones VHS tape with the Macrovision, known to be the hardest to defeat, The device ignores the MV protection like it was never there, I paused and rewond the tape to show the MV white bars on top of the frame because they are not part of the visual frame, so had to trick the VCR to show it briefly.
Played on JVC HR-S7600AM (Line TBC/DNR On) -- BrightEye 75 Capture Device (Frame TBC/Sync On) -- Black Magic SDI/USB3 Interface -- MediaExpress Capture Software.
De-interlaced and upscaled to 1440x1080 and let RUclips do the encoding.

Is _Young Indiana Jones_ indeed hard to defeat? I may pick one just for kicks to test the cheap A/D converters I have that normally ignore Macrovision.

That's the rumor, Honestly I can care less about MV, I can get any movie on Blu-ray, no need to digitize a VHS copy.

What Codec do you primarily use for best quality captures? Pro-Res 4:2:2 , B-raw, etc...
and I agree with you 100% about the 12bit and integrated TBC vs external tbc units as per previous comments. I am capturing currently to a BM Video Assist 12G field recorder.

@@SatisfyingSynths No, 4:2:2 is the maximum, this is not HD or 4K, SD was limited to 4:2:2 by standard.

What make / model of computer are you running the BM sdi capture device with? Did you have any issues with the setup.. I have a thunderbolt 3 on a Dell but it wont recognize the Blackmagic capture devices.. have a ultrastudio 3g.

    @Capturing Memories.
The problem is it captures in RGB colorspace . VHS should be captured YUY2 colorspace. It would be better to use a standalone TBC with a low end capture card. TBC are very hard to find.
Microvision is no big deal so low end USB capture cards simply ignore it the hauppage live2 usb ignores it the diamond VC500 ignores it too but the macrovision makes the VC500 AGC play up the brightness and contrast go up and down at will on macrovision protected tapes.

No, It samples natively at 12bit 4:2:2 YUV. Using external TBC has a downside, It converts from analog to digital twice, It's a no no for me. I'm very skeptical about a low end USB stick ignores MV, It's a big claim, do you have evidence to back it up?

@@Capturing-Memories 12 bit for VHS capture is over kill and doesn't bring any real benefits to the table with a low resolution 480i NTSC or 576 PAL, it doesn't say if the device supports YUY2 colorspace in its specifications online, if it does that's good but still too expensive for me or someone with a handful of tapes only. Does it have an s.video input -output because I can only see SDI?
I have test captured macrovision protected tapes on hauppage live2 USB and Diamond VC500 as well as the August VGB 100 clone mygica cap it made by Shenzhen technology china they made the Diamond VC 500 for Diamond multimedia too all 3 captured it without any issues but played havoc with the AGC levels on the Diamond VC 500 and August VGB 100 but all 3 use the conexant polaris chipset that's what virtualdub shows under devices anyway.
Best way to capture is lossless using a good USB 2.0 capture stick a line and frame TBC together and if the tapes are in bad condition and have tearing or 'flagwave' the technical team for jitter then adding a Panasonic es10 does wonders, it can introduce problems of its own crushed black levels over blown white levels even more of an issue with the Panasonic es15

@@atheistonyoutube It has nothing to do with overkill or underkill, VHS is one format, you could be working on a Betacam tape that is 100 times better than VHS, 12bit is the hardware processing at the ADC level, I output 8bit 4:2:2 because script software don't work in 10bit environement, Most consumer capture devices capture at 10 bit at the ADC level, All devices that adhere to rec.601 standard capture in YUV, analog tapes are not RGB, it's silly to think a capture device captures RGB without converting first from YUV to RGB, You can do that with the capturing app if you so choose but it would be foolish.
Yes this device is not easy to find nor it's cheap, I'm not promoting a sale here, just showing how it handles MV, You don't have to feel like you need to justify your setup, Most consumer capture devices can achieve the same quality with a budget capture device and a DVD recorder in passthrough, Albeit a dedicated external TBC is preferable but costs 2-3 times the BE75 if you don't mind converting from analog to digital twice.

@@Capturing-Memories But a 12bit hardware device should not be required for the average user with family memories, the price of this device is $1,377.50, who's going to buy such a high end device apart from a capture studio or someone doing transfers for a living?
8bit 4:2:2 chroma sampling is perfect it's what's used for VHS capture,10bit is uncompressed raw .avi video over kill for VHS and a waste of external hard drive space, best to capture lossless with a known good USB 2.0 stick like the ATI wonder 600 USB or the IO Data GV-USB2 some Diamond VC 500 work well and the Hauppage Live-2 USB capture in virtualdub set the video compression codec to huffy and pcm uncompressed sound because a sound compression codec is taxing on the computer and it'll make it drop frames, capturing with sound preview off stops virtualdubs dropping frames.
I know you have to set the color space in virtualdub to 720x480 NTSC or 720x576 chroma sampling rate of 4:2:2 YUY2 if capturing for archive or if capturing for DVD then 4:20 is acceptable, yes color information is lost but it's going to be compressed mpeg2 anyway and mpeg2 has its bitrate limitations of 9,500 MBPS so the lost color information should get hidden with mpeg2 compression or shouldn't be noticeable, video 99 professional Colin recommends VHS to DV AVI he does this for his customers so each person is different in approach but I think your approach is OTT but if you are capturing for others and getting paid for your work then I understand.
I'm not saying your trying to sell the device but my point is if someone sees the quality and thinks I want to buy this and can't afford it for them my way will get close to your quality at less than half the price.
Any external TBC will remove MV or MV is the problem buy a standalone MV stripper copy the tape then capture the copy without MV as long as it's the master source copying it should not degrade the quality
I agree external TBC are very rare and hard to find some faulty ones keep popping up from time to time, I would suggest IO DATA GVUSB-2 Panasonic es10 SVHS VCR with line TBC on . 300 dollars max.
