I studied with a boy from Turkmenistan. He was the son of a government official, hence why he was allowed and able to afford to study in UK. Me being from Canada I was supporting outdoor spaces, the boy from turkmenistan said that they "don't go outside because it takes away from spending time with family". I am Iranian and I've been to Turkmenistan. forget Ashqabat, the other parts of the contry are badly poverty striken. The roads are so bad it takes 500 km to destroy the suspension of a car.
Was interesting to watch, I was born in Turkmenistan. You actually used to be able to take a ride inside an elevator in that 3 legged building. Also, when I was growing up the 5 legged building at 18:39 used to have many video arcade machines and I often would come to play Metal Slug 1996 in there. If you would've visited Ashgabat 10 years ago you would find as many russians on the street as turkmens, not literally as many, but a lot a lot. It's used to be a good country during Soviet Union and now Turkmenistan is FUCKED. That big stadium you saw... there was another expensive stadium that they built couple decades ago and they destroyed it, millions of dollars went poof. Also, Turkmenistan government very barbaric and they kill any stray dog they see. Some Turkmens are nice, some behave like brainwashed animals, it's probably 50/50. We had a nice big house on a right hand side of a freeway which you took on your way from Iran, about 30 minutes from border. They destroyed it because they decided they don't want these types of houses to be visible from a freeway, though it was quarter mile away from a road. Our family put many years of effort into this house and these pieces of shit destroyed it. They gave us a smaller apartment in return. Turkmenistan used to be a good country during soviet union and 10 years after; now everyone with common sense moving out of this shithole.

They all live in Turkey or Iran. That’s why it’s empty. Turkmenistan was for many centuries part of Iran. Until Russia took over many Iran’s territories since it was occuping North part of Iran and British was occupying South part of Iran in 19th century. After discovery of oil in Iran by Brits in Bakhtiyari lands southeast central of Iran. Brits made government of Iran to give away its northern territories to Russia by making Turkmen-Chai and Golestan treaties with Russia. Hence Brits had full control of Iran after kicking Russians out of Iran. European colonization messed up a lot of regions in continent of Asia. Especially middle-east because European wanting full control of their natural resources.
Last time Iran had any control over Turkmenistan was in 1700s and back then the entire region including Iran changed its borders a million time. Central Asia was basically bunch of nomadic tribes in constant wars with each-other and at wars with Ottomans and Persians. Even before "European colonization" that never materialized, these countries never had established strong governments. Turkmenistan as it is today has Russian Empire and later Soviet Union to thank for creating this country from ground up: infrastructure, government system, education, healthcare none of which exited in its history prior to Russian takeover. But today Turkmenistan after independence from Soviet Union has become a North Korean style gulag of Central Asia and conditions are worse than North Korea. The country's dictatorship is the most repressive regime that gets no attention from international community or the U.N. It is as if Turkmen people are most worthless to U.N. to care about.

How bizzzaaaaare!!!! Where are all residents? Does anyone actually live there? I can’t help thinking you are all so brave because it looks so scary. I just checked and the population is reputed to be 5.85 million. They must all be on holiday!!
It is the population of whole country mate which is way bigger than Germany not their capital! I explained in a long message why Turkmenistan like this under video you should check that if you are interested.
Ggoddkkiller: Thank you, I do understand the meaning of a countries population and that not everyone would be in the one city, but generally a countries capital city has a large mass of the population. This is not a “ normal” city in any stretch of the imagination.
M C Mate it is why they built such modern and glorious buildings at first place to get attention of people who live in rural parts or other Turkic countries so they can increase their capital's population to a reasonable point. But it wasn't very successful so there is this huge city which is mostly desolate. Kazakstan which is another former Soviet country and also in exactly same conditions. They built Astana their capital after they got independent and they used similar architectures to get people's attention so more people would migrate into the city. But it didn't work well there neither, i guess those countries have no choice expect than waiting their populations to increase...
Ggoddkkiller But the city has a population of about a million? There just didn’t seem to be any people anywhere, which is not normal in a built up area
i guess the prices you indicate in USD base on official exchange rate. They have unofficial as well - which is easily exchanged and it is 6 times more. basically you were overcharged for hotel 6 times... I guess unless I am wrong :)

There are no people! Turkmenistan's population is only 5 million while the country is almost twice bigger than Germany where 80 million live so it is extremely desolate...
I wouldn't be surprised if it is under 3 million by now. With people fleeing abroad in large numbers to find the better future, the government taking strict action to stop it unless you got enough money to bribe.
Did u travel only the Capital city? If you went to desert and mountains you would see the best beautiful places in Turkmenistan, you would be surprised
Firstly, I would like to request that you refrain from referring to Aşgabat as a ghost city. Secondly, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our country. The reason why you may not see many people outside is due to the hot weather which forces them to either stay indoors or work. Every country has its peculiarities, and Turkmenistan is no exception. However, you can be assured that most Turkmen are genuine and simple people. Like any other country, we have strict rules in place to ensure the safety of our citizens. It is considered unacceptable to be drunk and loud, as it can disturb the peace of others. When you visit our country, please behave appropriately and follow our rules. While we do not discourage drinking, we request that you do not become too loud and cause discomfort to others. If you want to earn respect, you must be respectful of other countries' regulations.
grand hotel is not the best hotel in ashgabat it is one of the oldest best hotel is yyldyz hotel which means star hotel. there is no too many ppl in outside bcz turkmen people used to live just their own home some of them dont like going outside and if you go some mikrayons and mir district you will see tooo many people i know this cuz i was born in turkmenistan ashgabat
You should 100% do the mongol rally Chris! And yes, 60% of the countries we visited you can fly a drone, some are VERY illegal and can put you in jail, so it's worth looking into! We had to hide our drone behind our CD player to cross borders into certain countries or it would have been confiscated.

Wow that was weird! Did you get your tattoo in Iran Aimee?
Ahh well.. I wanted one, but as it was actually illegal, no one would say they new a tattoo artist. So we couldn't find anyone to do it.. shame really!
@@kingingit Ah that's a shame, next time maybe :)
I am from Turkmenistan 🇹🇲
If you wanted to see mall, you just passed it! You should go to Berkarar 😂
great video :D
Epic vlog boys & girls...
Gotta be the weirdest place on the planet...?
Kinda like 1 giant show-room for an entire city...
How good loved it!!!

Mate it is why they built such modern and glorious buildings at first place to get attention of people who live in rural parts or other Turkic countries so they can increase their capital's population to a reasonable point.
The pool scene was totally disrespectful! The tapes were placed there for a reason!
Turkmenistan is definitely is on my visit list. White buildings must be hard to keep white. Love, love and lots of love from Pakistan to Turkmenistan.
i guess the prices you indicate in USD base on official exchange rate. They have unofficial as well - which is easily exchanged and it is 6 times more. basically you were overcharged for hotel 6 times... I guess unless I am wrong :)
God I miss Ashgabat, lived there for 4 year.Wish i could go back 😍😍.
Cool trip i love places like that.
I am from Turkmenistan 😊
How unfortunate...
@@SumDumGai5 why do you speak without knowing anything I am from Turkmenistan
Why is it empty?
@@aamish374 becouse all this idiots live and write their comments in Russia, Turkey or somewere. thats why
@@marinakocaryan6553 dude I don't see more idiot than you. I am also from Türkmenistan. And I can speak on Russian, Turkish, English and little on Persian and Arabic. If you know Russian language more difficult to learn than English.
Forcing everyone to have white cars... weird. Yall seem like a fun bunch!
We are living happy and rich! Also we love our neighbours!
Oh I can't wait for the crater, that will be interesting :D What a place.
14:31. that's the Total point about us..... you mentioned, 40 Years of failure in such countries in 5 Second. and this is what you see when 90% of power and resources are belong to few, in one country.
Why there is noone around. It is not busy at all
Working in Turkey majority of them
Travel With Mansoureh many people stay inside of the buildings doing jobs no one walks outside
And in other cities there is more poverty
Looks interesting , Royal Roads , Visitor - few !
How eerie. I don't think I could have stayed there. I would have been freaking out. It's beautiful, but weird at the same time.
So did you ever find out why there weren’t residents out and about!?
There are no residents expect the ones you saw, i explained why Turkmenistan's capital is like this in a long comment under the video you should check that..
Wow great video! Creepy place I’m surprised they let you film. Where are all the people it’s like they are all living underground.
The people live in the countryside.
I’m from Turkmenistan and my dad is part of the government
Did u travel only the Capital city? If you went to desert and mountains you would see the best beautiful places in Turkmenistan, you would be surprised
you guys are like the UK version of American tourists
Thanks mate!
Ah such a strange place!! So cool though makes me intrigued to visit
I am just curious, how was the beer tasting in Turkmenistan in comparison to the UK?
Just wondering if you 2 have actually travelled previously!
Walking dead next season should be taken place in this city.
nice vid! Thanks heaps. :)
You are SO welcome mate :)
Watched an episode of dark tourist and they also broke a mirror in Turkmenistan. Do they make mirrors differently there I wonder?
Stick to the Costa Del Sol, you would blend in with the crowd!!
Wow, so crazy!
This weird place looks more like the largest outdoor theme park than a country.
Omg. That's how British people behave in hotel pools?
Absolutely
A unique place for sure!! :)
Oh, your vlog is nice! I'm from this country and it will be good if you come again to our country but in the other cities.
That was very awkward. Beautiful buildings but no one around to enjoy them and why so many guards? I wonder.
It's like a ghost town with no soul.
I am from Tu🇹🇲and Turkmenistan is a strict country
I lived
in Ashgabat I mean in Turkmenistan but I moved from there 3 years ago ad. I missed a lot my v country now I live in Romania
Great vid 👍😀
grand hotel is not the best hotel in ashgabat it is one of the oldest best hotel is yyldyz hotel which means star hotel. there is no too many ppl in outside bcz turkmen people used to live just their own home some of them dont like going outside and if you go some mikrayons and mir district you will see tooo many people i know this cuz i was born in turkmenistan ashgabat
Nazlim Tesfaye bro i know what u meannnn, same the good memories
I died when it cuts to the evening and she’s still working on that can of eggplant.
I really want to do the mongal rally. Wonder if you can fly your drone in many of these countries
You should 100% do the mongol rally Chris! And yes, 60% of the countries we visited you can fly a drone, some are VERY illegal and can put you in jail, so it's worth looking into!
We had to hide our drone behind our CD player to cross borders into certain countries or it would have been confiscated.
Kinging- It I signed up am am doing it. It is a bit of a nightmare trying to organise car insurance madness. But I think this should be the trip of a lifetime with almost nothing planned
i love everything about this video
Is that the place where the President decided to rename some of the months and days of the week after himself and his mum??
Yeah that was under previous 'light' dictator but I think it was changed back to normal after he passed away.
Asking if you have grenades and ak-47s with six officers around the car, that’s a regular traffic stop in Arkansas
Very nice 👏
Where's the people? Where's the dogs?
Doesn't seem natural or friendly
