    Fantastic to see Coe in full flow, pure class. Commentary by David Coleman top class too. Best there was at track and field.

    Love how the outfit of the athletes are varied. Coe in yellow, Robinson's high socks, Sub 4 singlet of Scott (my favourite)....

    Observe the majesty with which he just dismissed these other world class runners. Only Ovett had any challenge for him in his prime and this was actually at the end of Coe's prime years. He was special and he made it look easy although he would tell you it wasn't. He was just very well prepared. He had talent but I think he might have trained a bit harder than most. My favourite athlete of all time in any sport.

      Neutral Observer. . I thought Ovett was but I grew to respect and love watching Coe running because they were so similar . Both of them at their peak and in their prime I think you could separate them only with a cigarette paper .

    Great pairing. 1982 wasn't a bad season for Coe - then - except for that wretched 800 Euro final. And thr 1984 race - I consider to be the last race of the Coe supremacy era - he never looked so strong and masterful defeating a world class field again in my opinion - he should have cracked 3.30 that day if he'd had a mind to do it and it was a missed chance.

    In that 800, he eased up for the last three seconds! Big mistake as he would have probably run 1:43.5 - 1:43.8.

    • @deano27671
      @deano27671 6 лет назад +5

      Yes, and then he would have been the fastest man in 1982. As it was, this run, 1:44.48 was 2nd fastest behind Cram's 1:44.45! Shouldn't have eased up!

    The 1500m should have been sub- 3.30, given decent pace making. A shame, a lost opportunity.

  • @gakaface
    @gakaface 7 лет назад +2

    In the 1500, the last 200 was 25.9.

    • @deano27671
      @deano27671 6 лет назад +3

      There was a 0.1sec residual error on the onscreen clock, so he went through the finish line as the clock moved from 3:32.2 to 3:32.3. And the finish time shown, 3:32.40, was subsequently rounded down to 3:32.39. So his onscreen time at 1300m, 3:06.5, was more like 3:06.6, giving a last 200m of 25.7 (3:06.6 - 3:32.3(9)), perhaps 25.8, although normally finishing splits taken to 1dp rather than round up to nearest tenth. His last 100m was 12.5, which at the time was the fastest last 100 in a 1500 or mile under 3:33. IIRC, Kiprop ran a 12.4 in a 3:31high a few years back, but his last 200m was outside 26 and the last lap was slightly slower too.

      gakaface . And I don’t think he was even totally flat out either . If Ovett had of been behind him in this race I think he would of gone even quicker.

    coe was quality in both here-but esp that 1500m.there was only one man who could have challenged him-ovett.im always harping on about ovett being the best but i think theres a solid argument that they were equals

  • @deano27671
    @deano27671 12 лет назад +6

    His aim was to break the WR & he believed he was in sub 3:30 shape that day in Zurich. Unfortunately the rabbit, Robinson, ruined any chance with a 60.9 2nd lap. Coe wanted 1:51 at 800, instead he got 1:56. With a lap to go the pack was still with him & knowing WR was out of the question he just raced to win. I agree that he never looked quite as magnificent after, at 1500 anyway, though he really should have won the 86 European & his 3:29 a week later showed what should have been in 81-84.

    Coe had sure leopard speed, not built for power,( compare to NZ’s Peter Snell) but light framed strength with natural speed. ( his 400 metre was fast for middle distance runners). In some key races, he let the field get too far ahead.. this front running exhibition, was not his normal tactic. He could have been the first sub 3:30 for 1500, making him a super 800/ 1500 runner. ( But when it comes to 1500 m, in context , no one beats Herb Elliot 1958- 60) , NEVER beaten .. remember amateur then)

      RIP Peter Snell who died a few days ago. Arguably even better than Seb Coe, what with winning three Olympic gold medals including doing the 8 15 double! And breaking two world records in one run (the 800m and 880 yards). Peter Snell is a legend.
