I wasn’t raised in a conservative or religious family but I would have been mortified to undress and change infront of men (my amazing dad and any male nurse included) when I was only 9. Puberty can start at 8/9 so I don’t think it’s too weird that he’s starting to think about that- especially if his body is starting to change. It might be a red flag if he was feeling like this if he hadn’t hit puberty yet though.
I think it’s strange that the nurse took offence. I can see why the mum might need a moment to adjust. I imagine it’s hard to accept that your child is needing/wanting less care from you. I think the dad did great- if a little blunt in his way of advocating for his kid.
When I had my appendix removed, only my mum helped me to change (there was a nurse shortage). It didn’t cause issues at all. I did have keyhole surgery though. Maybe if the kid had open surgery then it would be more of an issue.
And I think inspecting/changing wounds is very different to having your entire body exposed. Idk. Just my take.

Oh thank you so much for sharing that! I think truthfully that when it comes down to it the dad did the right thing in the moment, but his delivery was abyssmal 😂 with a little less bluntness and more communication the nurse would have understood better what the issue was and he should have been way nicer to his (ex) partner, instead of just telling her that her son isn't going to let her bath him.
Still weird tho that he thinks random friends should bathe his son instead?? 🥲

As a kid, I got very sick at 10yrs old. In and outI of hospitals and I would have been uncomfortable, if I had to get undressed in front of four male nurses. I don’t think there’s anything deeper. I think the kid was uncomfortable and his parents stood up for him as they should. I’m not sure why so much debating about it. The kid was uncomfortable his parent protected his needs! Also maybe because you’re not from the US customs are different. But at age 9/10, you are very aware of your body and embarrassment, especially being nude in front of the opposite sex. I feel it’s quite normal.

Thank you so much for sharing! I was actually also thinking that maybe cultural differences play a big role in how you think about this story and generally how you grew up so this relies heavily on personal experience. Again tho i don't think he was out of bounds for asking everyone to leave, i think he was a bit rude to the nurse who was confused.

It is a bit weird as a very young child to be that uncomfortable. Like obviously not wanting to get undressed in front of loads of people makes sense at that age, but even as someone who didn't grow up in a super open household that's a bit strange. Especially because I doubt he's very developed at that age.

@@Keziah_2004x i think it makes MORE sense to be uncomofortable at 20. its way easier to get sexualized and your body is more developed. i would also be uncomfortable, but its so risky to not get help getting dressed right after surgery. and the dad was a bit rude for people trying to do their jobs.

@@izzzy3748 it’s much more risky to cause a child lifelong medical trauma over something so silly. He’s very clearly uncomfortable and it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks he “should” feel. As someone with many bad experiences of my own, it’s so out of line when a medical professional says “why does it matter, I’ve been a nurse forever” or whatever as though it matters. If the patient is uncomfortable, it was extremely easy to accommodate him and avoid scaring him away from the doctors for the rest of his life

I definitely agree! Really no one needs an audience when changing and that’s perfectly acceptable but to be uncomfortable to undress in front of your own mom at 9 but seems like a bigger issue 😶
