This conversation is such a treasure. Thank you for sharing it with us. I lead a company with a friend of mine for twenty-five years now and think that so much wounds could have been avoided, if we both had the knowledge you two shared with us in this podcast.
When it comes to interacting with a friend in a business situation, or just a different situation that they are in compared to your past with them; it does come down to respect, but its seems specifically about having respect for the new facet of them that you are interacting with and consideration for what others interacting with that role need in that environment.
All of my closest friends are people I’ve worked with, whether they were my managers or I was theirs. I’m glad you understand this. I don’t agree with the idea of not making coworkers friends-I’ve had far more positive experiences than negative ones.
The boss and friend situation is not ideal. Many people who are employee will say that I cannot be myself as if my boss know things about me then I feel my job is compromised. So I think you conversation needs to address this idea.

ego, it always comes to how good one handles their ego! If both people can handle egos, they are mature enough for a healthy relationship.
