    We had the gypsy moths here in way upstate NY. Two summers, 21 and 22. I thought my oaks were going to be done. It looked like the middle of winter in July, not a leaf on a tree. LOL, unfortunately the sound you thought of them munching away is actually their poop falling. Sounds like light rain. One co worker working in his oak lot thought the same until I explained. He said, so that sound is them sh..ting on me? I said yup. 23 and 24, my trees have recovered.

    The Gypsy /Spongy moth actually originates from Europe. A scientist imported some ,from England I believe, and was trying to breed them with silk works in Medford Massachusetts in 1879 ....they escaped.

      Pretty sure she’s talking about the Spotted Lanternfly which apparently hitched a ride on a shipment of stone from China or Vietnam about 10 years ago where they are native. Not a moth, but a devastating insect nonetheless, ready willing and able to do serious damage to forests and vineyards alike. Boo

    We had them really bad in my home area of Virginia back in the 1970s. They took out tons of trees. We got some nice lumber and about 15 years off firewood. I hate those critters with a passion. There were for several big bald patches on the mountain for about a decade.

    • @scottsoper
      @scottsoper 5 месяцев назад +3

      USA rail is way different from the EU. The Railroads here use about 23 million wood sleepers a year! (Railroad Ties to us) These sleepers, made by LCLY, will be sold to Koppers who creosotes them and then sells them to the Railroads. A injected creosoted sleeper can last 30-40 years according to Google.

    A debarker would be nice. The lumber yard ( Hoge Lumber, New Knoxville Ohio) I worked at had one for its saw mill. At its heyday they had 2 shifts and provide all their own electric and supplied the grid with the excess. They had kilns and produced KD rough sawn lumber and produce bowling alley lanes and a variety of broom heads and brush handles. Plus a custom cabinet shop and a truss shop. Now all that remains in operation is the cabinet shop. They failed to re-invest in the company and search for new markets.

    The "munching" you are hearing is actually secondary insects,they are eating the actual wood in the trees. Gypsy moths are defoliators,they eat the leaves of their"victims" and if enough moths defoliate the trees in successive years the trees can not produce enough food to continue to survive😢
