If you're watching this video you might be a Silverchair/Daniel Johns fan. What's your favourite Silverchair song?
I'm torn between Straight Lines and Emotion Sickness.

To me Satin Sheets maybe the song. I grow up listening Silverchair, I went through the same kind of things that the sound of the album when they were release. Diorama help me a lot. Cheers

@@iemisebastian Thanks! Diorama really is an amazing album. Such a shame that it never really got the exposure it deserved... but in a way it's also a little bit like a hidden gem because Daniel couldn't really promote it

I've always thought Daniel is super underrated as a creative force. I never understood why a single book hadn't been written about him.
Very happy to see that is now the case.
    Gotta find a copy now...
I work at a used book store....so maybe we can order it. Fingers crossed...

My favourite Silverchair album's is Neon Ballroom, and Young Modern. Also my favourite Silverchair song's would be Emotion Sickness, and definitely Paint Pastel Princess. Cheers, and Thankyou. I brought the Book about a year or so ago, & it's exactly the same as the 2 previous Silverchair Books that Jeff Apter has written about Silverchair. All Jeff Apter has done has added to the Silverchair/Daniel Johns history since his 2 previous books. And I mean word for word, I could not believe that it was word to word. Jeff Apter has written some good books but this was or is just a cheap way for Jeff to get a quick buck. I agree 100%+ with what you have said, in your opinion regarding this Book. Thankyou. From Tom from Sydney NSW Australia.

I know Daniel is a very private person understandably but I do wish he would write a Autobiography.
I totally love him as an artist and have a huge interest in him as a person, I have been since day one.

Thanks for the review Pip. I agree with most of what you said. I was disappointed that Jeff didn't get into the indefinite hiatus a little more with Silverchair. Disappointed there were no interviews with Chris or Ben about Daniel. Infact, there seemed to be a distinct lack of fresh content (As you mentioned). I don't know if Jeff was just going through the motions on this one to pay the mortgage.
I would have liked to known a little more about the management team and what they did to try and get Daniels head together. Why did the parents not jump in more to and pull Daniel aside and address the ongoing issues. Why did Daniel stay in Newcastle and Sydney where he was hiding in plain sight of the paps and a target for nutter fans. Maybe it was their unwanted attention that made Daniel feel complete. Again, all things good management would/should have addressed and worked with Daniel to face his demons. Jeff almost praises Daniels consumption of weed, but you have to ask how much that caused or contributed to the psychotic issues.
equilibrium of creative control is lost, Daniel might as well have gone his own way. Maybe he was too scared to go it alone at the time. I also felt the management should have stepped in at that point and said, "do what ever you want on the side, Silverchair need to evolve as the three of you evolve". And again, this would have given Danial the freedom he craved with his own projects and the opportunity to work with the other guys and produce music flavoured by the three. If Daniel no longer had an interest, maybe he should have walked away after Frog.
All the best to Daniel and his future music evolution. DREAMS sound a good producer short of a single. They need someone in the studio willing to throw ideas at them and get them to step up from their current comfort zone. Not a pal or a buddy, but someone they respect enough to butt heads with and take on board. Doing exactly what you want to do is fine, it's people outside your back slapping bubble that will make you a better artist.

And I can tell, like me, you're a legit passionate fan of Daniel and Silverchair. I very much appreciate your insights. Thanks!
Daniel is such an incredible human being....a true creative genius, and hugely underappreciated. But his life has been rather tragic in many ways. I really feel for the guy. I admire him immensely....and I just want the best for him at this point. I just hope he's truly happy, regardless if he ever makes new music.

I love Straight Lines too but for very different reasons. I used to play Young Modern in the car with my 3 yr old son in the back seat and he would say ‘play the toy shop song’ as he associated ‘Straight Lines’ with going to Toy World. To this day we still call it the toy shop song (and he is now 15 lol).

Why did they break up besides Daniel's desire to go in different directions creatively? Does the book say anything about that?

    • @pipcoomes7734
      @pipcoomes7734  4 года назад +8

Mostly just that Daniel wanted to explore much different styles of music that really weren't "silverchair". It sounds like tension was created between Ben and Daniel because Ben's mum was pushing him to get songwriting credits and therefore more money. Also sounds like fame and his various health issues really isolated Daniel from Ben (and Chris). Ben really was his best friend and then... they just grew apart.

Just finished the book, and there was a little of Imbruglia taking care of him at one of his low points the courting and marriage. a lot about school and tours.what was great was explaining all the inner workings of song creation and album writing, and band member relations.
