Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).

Saw this the other night, loved it. Notice how raw the camera movements are when he’s not as good at fighting in the first half, then notice how fluid everything is once he’s trained, great directing.
I didn't notice that. I thought the camera could use some work, but if it plays into the story, then that's brilliant. I wish they didn't leave the plot points with his friend and the girl hanging but I read Dev ran into tons of trouble during filming due to Covid.
Just saw it for the third time tonight haha, guess you could say I'm a fan (AMC A-List is more than worth the price). I noticed that as well, which was brilliant. I can't stand shaky cam and quick edits in fight sequences, but for this film it was clearly done with a purpose.
I'm a HUGE fan of Keanu Reeves, and the OG John Wick is easily in my top ten for best action films.....but I gotta say, I think I might like Monkey Man just a tad bit more. There's things John Wick does much better, but I loved the non-linear storyline of Monkey Man and how much social commentary was infused into the utterly brutal action. Hell, I teared up at the long flashback of the village raid. I think anyone with childhood trauma will have some kind of emotional response to it.
Will probably see it two more times before it leaves theaters. Cannot wait to see what Patel has in store for us in the future.
@@1stMarDiv4341 I hope this becomes a franchise, maybe a modern day retelling of the Ramayana as a modern day Ram takes on the 'Demon King' with Hanuman by his side as Monkey Man is loosely based on Hanuman's story.

@@jackanarchy99 hell yeah. Could easily see this expanded to two more films, but don’t want it going the way of John Wick. While I enjoyed the fourth entry in the series, I don’t like the idea of them making another. The ending was perfect, but since it made a boatload of money of course they want to squeeze every last drop out of the franchise.

It would be cool if it was set in same universe as john wick. Reason why i say this is beacuse john wick had that dark and gritty feeling and this movie has that same tone.

This movie is incredible. You can tell this movie was made with love and care. The fighting here is fluid and loose. There is no stiffness but actually hand to hand fights. His inspiration comes from Enter the Dragon and The Raid...enough said. Highly recommended. There is some story building in the middle of the film that some audiences may feel is a hit or miss but myself and my wife enjoyed it.

Exhilarating experience with surrealism and funky attires...lot of swashbuckling moves with ocassional dialogues like do you know my mother's name...so acting direction choreography screenplay jazzy punk rock script writing a full 4.2/5 from our side....

THE RAID 2 VIBE
Don't go into this movie expecting John Wick. The main character is not a trained assassin, nor is he a soldier. The story is a slow burn but it does kill with the climax. I hope that this inevitably becomes a franchise. Preferably with a modern retelling of the Indian epic Ramayana.

The music during this fight is fire af. Or the latter part is, the first is this slow somewhat typical Indian background music, but then it changes, when the helpers arrive. Not gonna spoil what it's like, cause it shook me. 😂
