The French got their revenge for the Seven Year's War. The Americans would not have won the war of independence if the French had not provided naval support keeping the British distracted in the Atlantic and Caribbean. The French monarchy assumed massive debt to help the Americans win their war of independence, and it was this war debt that directly precipitated the French fiscal crisis of the 1780s which culminated in the French revolution of 1789. The French revolution was an ideological or social revolution, the American revolution was a political or constitutional revolution. The effect of the French revolution was Jacobinism amd the abolition of feudalism and slavery. The effect of the American revolution was conservative, after Tom Paine served his function during the war of independence, he became an embarassment to the Americans. And Tom Paine was the mildest of Girondins in France, he would not even be considered a Jacobin. The French revolution created the very idea of Left and Right in a society of managed change. The American revolution had no such radical character. Slavery continued in America while the "black Jacobins" overthrew the French in San Domingo (Haiti). George Washington warned against political parties and for the virtue of religion in his Farewell Address, and unlike Napoleon, he had no ambition for continental revolution, though he was an inspiration to the Latin American revolutionaries.
