Impressive biography. The research & writing superior quality. Sad to hear about the hate he received from those fans who were dumb as a rock in pro wrestling universe
I vaguely remember him as the Iron Sheik yet he also used a Colonel Mustafa gimmick during the early 1990s. I met him personally perhaps once or twice. I wasn't surprised to hear about him getting fired with Jim Duggan because they rode in the same car together. Vince wanted to convince the fans that the storylines were real beyond one's imagination. In some ways, that was a turn-off for fans--present company included--because they wanted to get to know the wrestlers as people and not as characters.
He’s probably the most beloved hated heel in professional wrestling. I never forget when the announcer asked everyone to stand up in respect for the Iranian national anthem! With a small stature, he was twice as strong as most of his peers and a real freestyle wrestler.
First match I saw him in, right after Volkoff finishes waving the flag to the Soviet anthem - the Sheik whips off his bedsheet and 'Pearl Harbours' Sgt. Slaughter - good match - huge man!
He was an amazing wrestler and he had a "good life". People are mean and stole his "most prized possesions" because this is what some people do. Not all people are good, some are , really bad .
Came here after the Shoot interview vid with him, New Jack, and Honky Tonk Man. Three of the most hilarious folks ever!!!! Then hotel manager and security had to kick them out lol.
Iron Sheik was my favorite wrestler as a kid....always went for the heels.. When he took the belt from Backlund I was overjoyed!! Great childhood memory. It was the victim would be on their stomach, while The Sheik would be sitting on their back, while The Sheik would then bend the victims arms backwards to rest over his knees, then he'd proceed to give victims The Mother off all back breakers, by grabbing victims by their chinny, chin ,chin / head and lifting, bending the victims backwards until they were caput. It's kinda odd I never thought about it until I served in Iraq and Afghanistan but the Iron Sheik isn't even wearing a Iranian Traditional Headdress. He is actually wearing an Arab headdress. He probably started wearing it to look more like a stereotypical Muslim.
Vince has made millions (and memories for us I suppose) off of a great many politically and headline inspired characters.
