    💥The 7th video in the series takes the Peak Design Travel Line to Boston! It was a quick 2 day 1 night trip but it gave me a chance to test the backpack for what it was intended for - travel. What I was most curious about was how well it could handle being a carry-on on a plane, especially the smaller Embraer planes. I definitely learned ALOT from this short trip and I share my learnings after just one leg.

    Great vid. Two points. The loops in the zipper are for a TSA Lock like they denominated in there kickstarter videos. And it’s unfair to say that the bags uncomfortable because you packed it different from there specification. You squished a medium packing cube into the space of a small packing cube. Also this is a carryon design bag. It’s designed for putting in the overhead locker. You wouldn’t try that with a small carryon suitcase which has almost the same dimensions. But aside from that I love the format. And your delivery was superb.

      Couldn't agree more, fantastic video but I felt most of Will's gripes around weight, size and comfort came from him overpacking the bag way past what it suggests in on Peak Design website/videos. Regardless still appreciate the thorough field test review

    I just bought a Embark 45L at Target for $70! I wanted a backpack big enough to travel for a year but small enough it is not a hassle.
    If it does not work, Target has an Open Story backpack for $119 that looks really good.

    Just now found this brand and love how well you break down everything before I decided to buy my main bag. As an organization freak lady traveler, the wash pouch looks like something I could get a lot of use out of so I'm considering getting it, but I haven't really seen anyone mention how it holds up through airport security. I know I'm late to the game here, but what was your experience going through both Canadian and American security with the wash pouch and whatever toiletries you took with you?

    Started watching your video--and admittedly I need to watch it all! Love this field test--and you are Canadian so flying AC, which is what I usually do. So very very practical for me as I consider this bag, and whether it could fit under an airplane seat. I see you posted the video like 5 years ago--so wondering at this point if you have ever had any issues with airlines wanting you to check the bag or not put it under a seat?

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Год назад +1

      I’ve had really good luck with the bag to be honest! It’s been a mix of having it under the seat in front or putting it up ahead. I’ve tested it on a mix of airplanes from the smaller CRJs to the larger Boeings and Airbuses. I’ve also never been asked to check it in at the gate either. I hope that helps!

    • @arlencarlson
      @arlencarlson Год назад

      @@GoingAwesomePlaces That mix can make it a bit challenging to combine with having a roller bag carry-on as well. I suppose the 45L may be better for true one bag travel…not quite there yet.

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  5 лет назад

      Thanks!! I'll try to remember this for my next set of review videos to compare the field pouch to the tech pouch. I think off the bat in using both on my recent trip is that the field pouch is very flat. The field pouch also has very flat and small pockets within the main compartment which means you can only store a certain type of thing like memory cards, batteries and small accessories. Anything large just doesn't work with the field pouch which is why I've liked the tech pouch so much so far.

  • @emc3065
    @emc3065 5 лет назад +5

    Do US Domestic flights demand that you put bags under the seat in front of you? In the EU that bag would always be expected to be put in the over head locker. Only small handbags and 10-15L bags would be asked to be put under the seat in front of you.
    Also seems like the small camera cube is practically useless in this layout for travelling and ruins the "3 Small cube" design PD were going for. Think if your not going to need to access the camera while travelling it would be better placed horizontally rather than using the c-clips.

    • @johncroyfindlay
      @johncroyfindlay 5 лет назад +1

      It did seem like a very strange decision to try to put a bag this size under the seat in front rather than in the overhead. I don't think anyone would sensibly expect to do this... but perhaps just trying to demonstrate if it was possible.

    Did you have any concern about getting gate checked for size against the sizer? In the unexpanded state, because the bag is a soft good it can bulge a little bit even when not over stuffed - would love any feedback if gate agents squinted at you or if it’s snug against the sizer. My plan B is just removing a pouch as a personal item, but just curious how “compliant” the bag stays as long as you don’t open the 45L expansion gusset. You’re literally the only guy showing flying with this thing, props.

      I actually fly with this bag a lot. To most, it just looks like an average bag because it's very minimalist and sleek. I've never gotten any weird looks with this bag. If it budges, just smush it into there.

  • @petertran1985

    Helpful video. Glad I cancelled my wash pouch because as the video confirms, it looks too bulky. Backpack will probably be more suitable for warmer destinations where large items of clothing wouldn't be required. For a one-night trip, yours was already stuffed!

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  5 лет назад

      It's bulky but I've been using on my trip in NZ so far and I have to say it's been handy to have and really easy to use with all the camping and hostels we've been going through.
      The backpack in general is definitely not an all-in-one option for trips. I've complemented it with a smaller suitcase for a month long trip but it's fully capable of carrying all of my tech/camera gear.

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces

      In theory you could be it depends on what you carry daily. It’s a larger backpack and so there’s a lot of open space. You could get a camera cube and that would be a unique way to organize your things. You can definitely look at the smaller Travel Backpack which we’ve reviewed and I think that’s more suitable as a daily bag.
