I have been a homemaker for the past year (due to job loss). I have wholeheartedly embraced this time to go back to a simpler life. Doing laundry by hand, cooking from scratch, keeping the house clean (using vinegar and baking soda are invaluable). I love being frugal! My depression and anxiety have almost disappeared! More people need to stop living the fast life and get back to basics.

I remember how simple life was when I was a kid. I was born in the 60's and grew up in the 60's and 70's. It was a simple time where there was always something to look forward to. We didn't have instant gratification in those days. We wrote letters to our family and friends. Long distance calls were only made on Christmas. We had rabbit ears and an antenna on our roof that got four channels on our black and white TV. We looked forward to the Disney movies on Sunday evenings. My mom sewed all of our clothes. We used paper grocery bags for book covers for our school books. We got a lot of our furniture, bedding, and towels from hotel sales; they would sell off the old stuff for pennies on the dollar. My mom was a very thrifty housewife and she knew how to stretch our pennies.

Same way I grew up and it was the best times! Kids as well as some adults are missing out by being too connected to electronics and not cooking from scratch when possible. I came from Depression Era parents and grandparents that lived in OK and moved to Ca so I have learned as an adult all the things I thought were quirky as a teen. Five million twist ties or paper bags in drawers and pieces of aluminum foil. lol Cooking from scratch only😊

A few years ago my Dh wanted to build me a new chicken coop, but we didn’t have much of a budget. He tore down an eyesore shed and saved all the useable wood for the new coop. I found an old window at a thrift store. We used shingles I made roofers leave after they redid our roof (they were loaded in their truck ready to drive off with shingles we paid for!). All we had to buy was some fencing for the run, and siding to match the garage. We used paint leftover from doing the house. We were so far below budget we splurged on a cute metal chicken weather vane for the roof. My husband has a scrap wood stash that has come in so handy over the years, but using nothing but repurposed wood to build my adorable chicken coop was our best low cost project to date.

@@floridahorsegirl1019 I don’t know how to post a picture on here. It’s probably a 6x8 building with a roof that slants down on just one side. The run is totally enclosed and is about 8x10 I suppose. The nesting box is attached to the outside so I don’t have to go in, and has a ramp for them to walk up to get into it. Lots of roost area inside and out. The only thing I’d do different is add a larger overhang from the coop to the run so it stays drier in the wet weather.

I’ve bee collecting scrap lumber, fencing, nails, bolts, brackets, windows, doors and cement blocks from the local dump to build my chicken coop. I have enough but need to build it, I’m a 55yr old woman and don’t know how to build it and winter is here so I have to wait for spring but it won’t cost me a thing 😍
My neighbor told me the other day his daughter has $9k in her coop 😳

I was gifted a second-hand wooden barstool that someone's puppy had chewed on just a little bit. I had my husband cut the stool down and I used the seat portion with about 3 inches of the legs left and use it as a riser for my plants. The dilemma was what could I do with the rest of it, after looking at it from all angles I realized that if I turned the bottom portion upside down it would hold my husband's work boots and work as a rack to dry his wet boots in cold weather. We put it to the test last winter and it worked wonderfully when place next to heat vents. This was by far my most successful repurposed item.

I've been making fried chicken from scratch, and freezing my food in ziplock baggies before use and I love that method! I used my old one that literally was falling apart and made wreaths out of the branches. A few pine cones, sweet gum balls, magnolia seed pods, scrap ribbon, and lights made them so pretty and I even shaped a tree wreath for our front door.

We also got a second hand tree. After 12 years of our use (and who knows how many before) it was looking sparse. I got ‘garland ties’ from Dollar tree. They look just like my tree. I twisted on a few packs of those and it filled in nicely. Spruced up my tree for about $7.

It's a Hob nail glass dish...it has no marking because it's a hand made end of day glass. I worked as a curators assistant at Wheaton Glass Museum in Millville N.J. The best thing I found in the trash was a box of cook books. Found like a if things on the alley way when a family was moving. Knocked on door and asked if they were put out. Yes, take what you want. High end baby crib, window air conditioner, and can't remember what else. My husband nicknamed me Sanford &Son. All things were given to friends that needed them. Hv to try the bread. Looks delish.

The blue glass bowl is gorgeous! And,you're right: Emmy made!
I took the drawers out of a dresser, that was left in an apartment I rented, and stacked them up to make a bookcase...while I shopped for a bookcase. I never bought a bookcase because those drawers worked so well. Once, in a thrift shop, where wealthy people lived, I found a couture 2 piece dress, which was not only custom designed, but the fabric was also actually custom hand loomed. It was FANTASTIC!! I bought it for $10 I wore it and wore it till I couldn't fit into it any more. Usually, I'd have cut it up to make something else. For this dress, though, I re-donated it and got a tax deduction for it. While I was there to re-donate it, I found a few more things to buy...but never again something as wonderful as that 2 piece dress! 👗

Today we took the kids to Lake Erie. Hubby's birthday is tomorrow, so the road trip was part of his birthday gift. It was so fun to see the kids see something so amazing! Earlier this week I got winter squash on sale at Meijer, then the next day Aldi had it on sale at $.20 cheaper. But I'm not complaining because it was only like $.89 and $.69 each. Today I used the stove, my blender and the instant pot to make a butternut squash soup. I used chicken broth I had frozen last month and seasoning, spices and ingredients I already had. It was a really simple yet filling meal with a side of grilled cheese w/tomato sandwich.

I love that you opened this video with that gorgeous sunrise! For me that's the epitome of why I live frugally, so that I actually have the time to enjoy things like that. My best trash find was an entire patio furniture set, with cushions, that a relative of my neighbors gave to them. They decided they weren't really using it and so they put the the table and 6 chairs out to the curb. This was such a blessing to me. I live in Florida now and my children came down for Christmas last year and the weather was so beautiful that it would have been lovely to eat Christmas dinner outside but, I didn't have patio furniture. My son said that next year he wanted me to get patio furniture so we could enjoy Christmas dinner outdoors. I was planning on picking up a patio set on sale until my AC broke down and I had to spend $8000 on a new one. So if the neighbors hadn't thrown away their set I would never have been able to afford even a cheap set on sale. Love your channel 🌻🍁🌻🍁🌻

I don't have an apron but a snap-up-the-front scrub top works great for protecting your clothes. I i bought a couple from a thrift store that i use almost all the time because i bought a "large," plenty big enough to cover my clothes and not restrict movement, very loose and comfortable. (And has large pockets, just as the old aprons did.) Really saves your clothes when you cook. My grandkids can use my old med or smalls for painting/playdough smocks.

Yes!! It is truly the simple things that can provide so much joy. I find that I really enjoy simplicity the older I get. I don’t know that I repurpose as much as pick up things I need…like one day I was walking and someone who was moving out a bunch of things on the sidewalk for people to take. All my life I have enjoyed hanging my laundry outside. I remember helping my mother as a young child. The lines were at the back of the yard. behind our home was a power plant (We were in the heart of Dallas TX.). There acres of land and a huge lake that fed the plant. In early spring the field was FULL of wild flowers and yes.. some were actually weeds! After hanging out laundry we would go under the barbwire fence and pick flowers and play(till Security would wave at us and we would leave). I love being outside and listening to the birds. With my VERY large family I have saved a lot of money on my electric bill. All of my 8 children attended Catholic school. I put thier uniforms in the dryer for just a few minutes then put them on hangers. I hand them on a rack or the shower curtain rod in the winter and rainy weather. I love the fresh smell on my linens. I've been stopped by strangers who asked "What kind of detergent do you use?". A simple thing I truly love...especially when the entire family gets involved!

Love your beautiful fall colored top! My most recent 'fix it up' story is with a purse. I wanted a new purse for this coming winter, and found a very cute, stylish, black and white Rossetti purse at the thrift store for $1! As I got to the check out, I saw that one of the fabric sides had a coffee stain on it. For a dollar, I decided to try to get it out. Sure enough, my wet Norwex cloth took the stain out in 30 seconds! The inside lining needs a little stitching in one place, but that will be easy to do by hand. Hello cute 'new' winter purse! Also, our son needed some more storage in his room, and I'd been thinking a 6 section cube shelf would work well. While walking this summer, I FOUND one out for the garbage! I heard the trash truck on a nearby street, so I hurried home to get the car. Even though the shelf unit needed cleaned and tightened, it was just what we wanted. Husband and son cleaned and tightened it, and it looks like new! Another example for our young adult son that God provides!!

I quilt, but my friend knits/crochets. She goes to thrift stores and gets cashmere sweaters, unravels them separates any very worn fibers and re-knits them into other garments. I am so envious of this talent of hers. Me? I will work any cotton fabric into a quilt. I have "rescued" more than one antique quilt in my life. The challenge is amazing and fun at the same time.

That bowl is beautiful! Did a quick shopping at Publix grocery store this morning and I grabbed a few items. A couple of items were on a month long sale with today being the last day of the sale. It wasn't until I got into my car that I looked at my receipt and saw that the two sale items rang up at regular price. Went back into the store and up to the courtesy counter where I was refunded the entire original cost (not just sale price) of each of those two items meaning I got them for free! Did not realize that Publix will refund you the original cost of any sale item(s) if they do not ring up on sale! I am so grateful I went back into the store!

I have always wore an apron, when my children were little it meant I could pop things in my pocket still keeping my hands free whilst tidying up. Kept my clothes clean when little toddlers were about. Doubles as a peg pocket whilst bringing washing in from the line if it showers. Have one for gardening whilst deadheading etc. I love aprons :)

When my son was little, we used to go ‘junking’ a couple of towns over.
He would be on the lookout from his car seat for things that looked cool.
We found a teeny tiny wheelbarrow that he used to help me in the garden. When he got to big to use it, I took it apart, refinished it, drilled holes, and use it as a planter in my garden. I always think of our adventure when I see it.
I also ‘junked’ an entire farmhouse of old large windows. I couldn’t believe they were just being thrown out. We brought them up to my dad and with my vision, and his skills, they were turned into beautiful trellises for my flowers.
I plant black eyed Susan vines on them every year. 😊😊😊

What an amazing find, Id use it for desert like candies or baked one bite size delicious cookies etc. I recently reused my old stained with wine and coffee (those stains does not come out anymore) dressing gown instead of apron and I liked it. I was about to throw it away but one cold morning I put it on went to make a coffee and started cleaning the kitchen. Then it was like an eye opener - I could put this dressing gown instead of an apron (which I dont have) and wear it while cleaning my house. Perfect protection for clothing. Nobody sees me anyway when Im indoors cleaning. Thank you for your warm and inspiring videos. ❤😊

I love you mentioned the aprons....I use to never understand why use an apron. This past year I figured it out, with cooking, cleaning, gardening, an apron is essential to protect your clothing. Only problem is, I am a bigger chested woman as such i never liked an apron because it doesnt cover my chest areas properly. Well i taught myself to sew over the pandemic and i suddenly realized i could take my apron, make a Templet, and add adding the extra width I need and just see up my own aprons with pockets and all to my liking.

Dear Emmy, I am baking every weekend bread or bread rolls. I love to do this. Your recipe looks great! I will try it! My first frugal blessing "for free" is to use the old garden of my parents in law, who died 6 years ago. In this big garden we grow lots of potatoes, peas, beans, cale and so much more for our great family. It is always a family event when we are there and share all the harvest. Yesterday, for example, we harvested 30 kg of potatoes, tons of apples and plums and planted 5 big rows of little strawberry plants (for free from my own garden), garlic and winter salads. Our second frugal blessing was a little sports equipment, which we have got for free from a neighbour. Now we can do some exercises in our pantry in the basement of our house. By the way, you are looking so beautyful with your hair❤.

Great video Emmy and Paul....so good.
Love the idea of a simpler time.
Something I found a long side someone's trash:
It was a 3 panel screen, you know the kind you open to use as a room divider and in the old days, some ladies would dress behind ..I found one of those. The fabric on it was very thin and tore in a few spots.
What I use it for: when I want to have my front door open for fresh air or cool air, I will set it up in front of the open door and it keeps my dogs from seeing out and barking at everything. If the screen wasn't there, the dogs would bark at people walking by or a cat crossing our yard or the mailman....
    It's a perfect solution.
And one of these days, I will re-cover it and make it pretty again.

I strain and reuse my vegetable oil just like my mom did. I also put an apron on around the house. When my mom passed away we donated many things to Goodwill but they would not take an end table as it had minor water damage from lack of using a coaster. Good morning Emmy and Paul... was just thinking of making oatmeal bread recently... you read my mind! I repainted our laundry room last month and as it really is the main way people come into our home I try and make it look nice. I went through my vintage tablecloths and found one perfect to use as a curtain for our hot water tank then used some of my falling leaves Hall pottery collection to put laundry supplies into and display dryer balls, cleaning cloths and a floral arrangement. I took a photo of the pieces-with my phone and printed it out in color for free at the library. I glued them to refrigerator magnets given away by a local business and cut them out. Wonderful video! After our hectic move in early September, we are finally getting settled and back to our frugal ways (spending all that money for home improvements and moving costs was terrifying to us!) :D We are happy to pick up useful things that we have a genuine need for/time to make good if necessary. We once picked up a desperately needed item from the side of the road which was just being thrown away. We found the clothes airer a little rusted but otherwise fine and after checking it was OK to take it, we did! We de-rusted it, painted it up and we have been using it constantly since then! That was in 2019! Praying you are both well and have a Blessed weekend ahead xx

We furnished our first apartment with some of that 'junk' (because there were no laws against taking it. Someone had put out a rataan couch and chair! Family contributed too, pots and pans, serving dishes and lamps. I still miss some of those hand-me-downs.

We got a new puppy that needed crate training, but no room for the crate. Took out the end table I was using and cut the wood piece down and attached it to the top of the crate that we already had and made a nice crate/table.

I had a lovely large art canvas but it did no longer fit the room colors, so I just painted over it and it looks lovely. Another canvas which was given to me completely damaged, I stripped the canvas and reused the frame as a weaving frame. Changed a baby changing table put an old mini sink over it and use it as a potting area for my plants. I repurposed an old coffee table as a seating bench, reusing old baby baskets and wash baskets as plant pots which are easier to store away than heavy plant pots, I reused old chairs and scrap wood to build a chicken coop which is still solid after many years and I reuse laminate flooring pieces where a bookcase or cabinet backings are torn. The laminate if fantastic and easy to fit and looks lovely.

My new favorite old is a small clipped article from 1940s I recently found between my grandmother's cookbooks. Pantry cakes. It didn't give any recipes, but it reminded women that you can make crumble cakes (thick pie crust bottom, some filling or thick jam and crumble on top) and store them airtight in cooler pantries and you can serve them up piece at a time for a month. As they are largely sugar, flour and lard/butter - they age well and harden up enough to cut them neatly. They were suggestions of making 2 cakes with different filling and cutting them up in portions so you can give your family a piece of cake every other day with their soup to cheer them up. I think it is actually a very nice idea, because most recipes suitable for it, like poppyseed cake, tend to be quite sweet and wholesame so you cut them in rather small pieces per serving. Goes well with the patch cooking too.

I still can see my grand-mother wearing her apron with huge pockets to put all things out of place so she can fill them and once she reached each spots where these items we near, she just emptied her pockets...she did this all day. She had no room for a tissue, so she put it in her bras, which I do also. Such great memories.
