I remember having a Saturn for a while. Played Tomb Raider to finish, Quake and a few goes on Clockwork Knight. An underrated system overwhelmed by the PSX.

I very nearly got one..but the PlayStation pull was too much. I got burned a bit as most did by the mega cd 32x add on nonsense.

For the most part it seems to be running pretty well And for the price you really can't go wrong

Great video mate! Still eyeing this up! Apologies if it was mentioned somewhere in the video, I'm watching at a library with the sound low, what emulator/core was used? I'm guessing this wasn't beetle core based on the Sega Rally gameplay. The road seems to "break up" and this doesn't happen on real saturn/beetle gameplay. But everything seems super smooth and contradicts the notion that the ARC is not capable of running Saturn.
Also regarding Sonic R I absolutely adore it and it is criminally underrated haha. The characters are meant to be driven like cars with B as an accelerate button, and the analog as steering and L,R triggers as drift. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty smooth and you'll be acing all the races. Perhaps it was a bad design choice to have the, running in hindsight.
Oh and your accent makes me nostalgic for Scotland, it's been ages since I've been home.

@@CrazyBurger Ok thanks. I feel like they should release a beefier version of this with an analog stick that can run Beetle. But as a handheld that is good for running fighters it kicks ass!

I've ordered one on offer for 80 euros, and I was a little down to see other videos with Saturn games either simply not working or running very bad, but this video made me feel a lot better about it. I have it coming without games, so I'll have to see how the file structure works to load it up, ut I want it mainly for Sega games up to the Saturn, including some 32X maybe. Dreamcast maybe a couple of games, but without the analogue stick have to see how well it goes. Looking forward to seeing if some of the fan translated japanese Saturn exclusives work well on it, as well as a few JRPGs like Magic Knight Rayearth.
Might be something that needs tinkering with to get to work as, like I said, it seema to work great for you but terrible or not at all for others. But knowing it can has me very pleased

Glad you got to try Saturn Duke Nukem, it looked as if it was running great! (Hold) X=Look Up/Down with D-pad, Double tap X to center view. Was great hearing you actually impressed by SAT Duke 3D, if only we had this one on Evercade lol. Lobotomy Software were gods on the Saturn, they did Exhumed (aka Powerslave), Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. For the most part Saturn emulation was not bad at all, the thing I don't like is that these things keep coming out and keep getting better, never ending... Having one like a Saturn pad is a win though!
BTW Merry Xmas, have a good one! 🙂👍

@@CrazyBurgerMy misses is hogging the kitchen tablet playing Facebook lol... Yeah likewise Crazy and thanks for your vids on Evercade and putting up with me as JK! You were more busier than Blaze this year thanks to the Supsr Pocket and testing every game! 😉
While I think of it, quick tip...
Saturn, when in-game holding A,B & C and pressing Stsrt will return you back to the title screen of that game. At the title screen holding A,B & C and press start will return you to the Saturn's Frontend, on a real Saturn you would then hold "A" when the screen goes blank to stop it booting the game again.
Dreamcast, hold A,B,X & Y and press Start to do the same thing as the Saturn.
      Have fun!

Got loads of ideas but think I'll be glad of a little break.. probably have a couple of vids before Christmas.. them after it'll be 2024 Evercade predictions..

The PS1 and Saturn ports of Duke Nukem were done by different developers. IIRC, the PS1 used a port of the PC based Build engine, implemented entirely in software. The PS1 wasn't really up to running this engine.
The Saturn port was rebuilt from the ground up using the Slave Driver engine, which was created to utilise the Saturn hardware to its fullest.
This hardware based approach really pays off. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night received a less than stellar port by a third party developer. They pretty much tried to shoe horn the PS1 code base into the Saturn, ignoring things like the differing screen resolutions and the fact the Saturn used a slower version of the PS1's CPU, but had two of them. A perfect port would have been possible with proper care and attention. Fortunately, homebrew developers are gradually fixing the Saturn version.

I grabbed a pen and paper...
Doom was proper bad on Saturn, the Japanese version was a little better but still the same mess, has a different name which I forget. Stick to PS1 Doom!
Saturn was best for 2D, Bust'a Move, True Pinball marginally better on Saturn than PS1, but only just.
Some games you have might be PAL50hz which could be the reason for some display issues, PAL Sega Touring Cars for example on a real Saturn does not run properly if in 60hz! If you can set the emulation to 50hz try that...
Bug, Bug2, Clockwork Knight were Saturn only.
Hexen SAT was not full 30fps and ran a bit slower than Doom on PS1, looks close to a real SAT.
Daytona SAT was 20fps 50hz, 25fps 60hz, it did look a little slow and while the draw distance is short it looked even shorter than the real deal as if there was a delay getting it drawn? Compare with other vids...
Quake, that light does flicker at the start of the level, I did see a tiny glitch in the wall but looked good to be fair. Anything odd could be emulation issue.
Sega Rally, hard to tell from a video but looked to have some slowdown and yeah that odd blue/white flicker in the distance is an emulation issue.
Shinobi, PAL version is called Shinobi X and has a totally different sound track, I prefer the PAL version.
Sonic R actually looked ok, but did look heavy as you were trying to turn, hard to tell if it's lack of practice or an emulation thing.
Street Fighter Alpha 2 is the one you want.
Tomb Raider looked good, those white polygon lines that bleed into the graphics on a PS1 were not something you really saw on SAT, however those black lines might be there, been a while... Compare with other vids.
WipeOut SAT, if it's at all possible set the audio to mono, and if it really is mono the game will run faster and smoother. Check in-game sound options. Try this with Hexen. On a real SAT & PS1 "some" games run a bit better with mono sound if they ask to much of the hardware.

For me Saturn was Sega Rally Championship, Mass Destruction, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga and every fighting game that hit the platform. Shame Virtua Fighter is a mess but at least Fighting Vipers looks playable. Most importantly at least the 2D fighting game you played looks top notch. I’d probably use this just for the 2D fighting games if I’m honest… It’s my groove (to quote Capcom vs SNK on the Dreamcast).
Fluid versions of Sega Rally, King of Fighters (hopefully) and Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the move are worth the admission price alone.
      Definitely on the 2024shopping list!

Tomb Raider I do remember those black lines on the Saturn version, and I also remember on the Saturn, when Lara was swimming on the surface of water, her body out of the water would still have the ripple effect, whilst on the PS1 she didn't. It may have been fixed for the PS1 version, as the Saturn port came out before the PS1.
That Doom issue of it being terrible was actually interference from the Doom creator. The studio porting it made a good version, and the creator ordered it be destroyed and start from scratch because it wasn't using the hardware how he wanted it to be used. I remember about it from a long time ago, can't remember the details.

    • @MIKandJEAN
      @MIKandJEAN 2 месяца назад

@@hyzenthlay7151 I recall hearing something about that. Thankfully Saturn Doom came in handy for one thing... I ripped most of the sound track off the disc, I then burned an audio CD and had the sound track running with xbox360 Doom. I never liked the original Doom music, no music or PS1 sound track for the win. 😎👍
