  • Workplace romances can be challenging…especially when your job is being part of a rock band. That was certainly the case with the band Heart. In fact, their first Top 10 hit in the US was written about the beginnings of what became an intra-band relationship. Get into the story of “Magic Man” in this episode of the Behind The Song podcast.

Cool episode! Yes, Canada did a love affair with the Wilson Sisters in the mid-70's, and three of their albums, Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen & Dog and Butterfly (lol no, not Magazine) are still often spun in this house. Thanks to the success of Heart's first few records, more women picked up guitars, bass guitars and drums and in turn found their own voices. I remember seeing Heart three X's alone between 1978 - 79. Such wonderful memories of a 16 year old rocker-kid. Their beautiful melodies with words depicting both themes of romantic whimsey and especially scorned love, set them on the map. Such passion - lol such swagger. I am so glad Annie ignored her Mom's advice. lol

The fact that these sisters at their current age can still do what they do at such a high level is amazing.
Awesome video once again, Janda. I have a really good one for a future episode. No Rain by Blind Melon. Shannon Hoon may be one of Rock music's greatest what ifs.
While he barely avoided the "27 club" He was still taken away much too soon.

Ann always said 'Barracuda' was about record company management. Wonder if it was really the "Magic Man" gone bad?

Could be, but I believe this "Magic Man" shepherded them through the Barracuda years and left in '79, so I think Barracuda was more about the record company execs and the press.

Barracuda had nothing to do with Mike Fisher, it was a sleazy record exec backstage that asked Ann about her and Nancy being lovers.

Good morning, Janda! A hearty hello from loony California. My wife says hello as well. How I remember buying that album with my old girlfriend. Yikes!
Another wonderful job. All these stories are just fantastic to listen to. Most are a stroll down memory lane for us.
My wife had to turn down an offer to see Bruce Springsteen in Ireland. Her coworkers husband has covid. So she wanted her to go with her. If we hadn't seen him in San Francisco a few months back. I would have figured out a way to get her on that plane tomorrow. Our passports are expired.... Ooooops! Plus, the doctor she works for would have had a nervous breakdown. My best to you, your husband, and your kitty cat.

Fascinating backstory. The lyrics and instrumentation are just flawless. Heart is such a legendary, sensational band. Looking forward to visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a couple of weeks for the first time. Of which Heart is a most worthy inductee.❤
