They have to break the ice off the boat and push it off in the water because it can build up so thick it makes the boat really top heavy and much more likely to capsize in rough water.

It's an old seafarers tradition called "SHANGHAIED" you get to drunk or get into trouble in a town in some seaside dive bar. You'd wake up on a boat out to sea.
My Dad was a Merchant Marine and his eyes would light up whenever he spoke about being on the ship or really anything having to do with the sea!! I miss you Daddy❤
Having worked as a marine biologist and had to live on a ship like this in the arctic, it's insane how fast everything gets frozen over, we would knock the ice off only for it to be back not even 20 minutes later
Don't know whether there are women or no, but how would you tell under all those layers. Or do you think they'd be out there in bikinis or daisy dukes to do this work. Anyone that is willing to work on these ships has my respect.
That is actually a SUPER important job. All that ice is building up weight on the top half of the ship. If a big enough wave hits the ship making it list to one side, all that ice will help it capsize. So these guys are literally performing life saving work right now.
Fun fact: Most people (including the people who make the German synchros and the subtitles) translate "North sea" to "Nordsee" which isn't only wrong, the "Nordsee" is a teenie tiny sea in Germany, not even big enough to be an ocean. (Seriously, I am almost 100% sure there is a lake in Hungary that is bigger than it)
One cubic meter of pure water is,by definition, 1 Metric Ton. Salt water is even denser and heavier than pure water. Ice build-up can sink a ship. They become top-heavy and capsize.
