- Flights of the Proto-OmniWing, the OmniWing, and the Advanced OmniWing at the local city park. Light breeze blowing through the trees, thus the wings are buffeted about a bit, but a good demonstration of the comparitive flight capabilities of the three OmniWing variations. Visit my channel to see how to buid each of these wings. I suggest you start with the Proto-OmniWing. Also at my channel are other videos showing flights as well as some discussion on the "Inspiration of the OmniWing", and "Paper Airplane Aerodynamics 101".
These are challenging wings to build but if you get it right you are rewarded with a very high performance wing, with good glide ratio and sink rate while having excellent stability. Наука
Wow, I remember watching this as a kid, making these were super fun and flew so nicely, thx bud.
I am still building paper airplanes to this day at the age of 67. Also still flying hang gliders and riding mountain bikes. Got to keep the mind and body active. Best to you.
Tell me about it, I miss being a kid anything was fun
Yeah... I have been totally geeked out over this design now for over 3 decades.
I spent so much time making these as a kid! You really made something really cool and fun!
Hey.... thanks for revisiting. So great to here from the fans.
Awesome tutorial on building the omniWing, made one for my boys and they love it only addition I made was to make a little handle on the bottom out of tape. I was a little worried that I had to use shipping tape instead of scotch tape as I had no scotch tape and the shipping tape is a lot heavier but it worked like a champ. Thanks for taking the time.
I love making omniwings every day. Its fun and cool. Im 9 years old and i started making them hen i was 6. Thanks to this video i know how to fly it better!
Others have done the little handle thingy, to aid in launching. It is a good idea. Glad you are sharing this craft with the boys.
Lovely! Just a piece of paper giving so much fun. This is american genius i really like. No bullets no guns, no screaming, no killing. Thanks a lot for giving me back some of my trust
Never to old to play and have fun. Plus I do enjoy the challege of trying to make very high performance gliding craft from paper. I hope that you, Adrian, also never loose the ability to play.
love it that there are people out there doing this. seems like you have a good understanding of it. thanks for the upload
Agreed. Despite my 3 decade infatuation with this design, I am still amazed at it's performace, stability, scaleability, and ease of modification. Thank you for your comment.
Yes.... The inherent stability is built within this design. It will always correct back to stable flight after getting buffeted about by turbulence. Just like a good glider should. Glad you appreciate the design.
Haven’t seen this vid in a long time, still awesome
I don't care what anybody says. I think it's awesome that he is sharing his videos. i for one loved paper airplanes as a kid and still do till this day. seeing this video inspired me the get creative. i made an advanced omniwing yesterday and it flies great. thanks menamiketrx i will subscribe
FINALLY I FOUND YOU AGAIN AFTER YEARS OF NOT THINKING ABOUT IT SINCE CHILDHOOD, IM GONNA MAKE ONE THIS TIME
Excellent. Hope you enjoy and have success.
Yeah..... My favorite pick up line... "Soooo.... you like paper airplanes?" and it is a done deal....
Nothing better than to pass on some great fun and knowledge to the young one's. Best to you.
I personally think this plane is pretty cool. I mean 1 piece of paper can do this and can fly however far. Thumbs up for making it!
Totally enjoyed the video & appreciated the thought that has gone into this. I look forward to trying to build these gliders myself & having fun with my nephews, thanks!
I have an exam tomorrow and I am sitting here learning about making paper planes so that I have something to do in the examination hall
How did you do on the exam 3 years ago
@@owenkirschner5343 Dag gammit I was going to ask him that
You got me for a second, but I got suspicious before reading your disclosure. Thanks for the laugh!
Practice, practice, practice... You are looking at our decades of me perfecting this design.
How can anyone dislike this?.....uber cool dude. Well done and a big thumbs up
Awesome wings!... Amazing performance... Impressive!
The OmniWing provide an excellent platform from which to make variations. Glad you have success!
These your paper aircraft have a very smooth flight and go away, congratulations!
Amazing flights!! I love making new desighns of paper airplanes! :)
I have taken an OmniWing and the attached it to a traditional Dart style paper airplane and it worked fairly well. The Dart providing a downward fin of which can be used to grab for launching as well as being a method for providing for a hard toss.
This is awesome and really fun once you get it right!
So great to introduce the young ones to the wonder of flight.
Do take time to try some of the builds on my channel. Glad you enjoyed the flights of the OmniWings.
If the contest was purely a glide ratio contest, there are not many that would compete. I did compete in some indoor contests for distance in the 1970's, and would always beat all the competition. Even was able to beat the balsa wings that were competing. I like the OmniWing for it's stability, and low sink rate and high glide ration. I also lik the flexibility in the design which allows for lots of modifications to suit various conditions. Again I pay much respect for the Origami crowd.
My original design.... Started working on this design in 1973. Still folding and flying the OmniWings to this day.
One million views. Thanks to all my subscribers and fans.

My gosh! These are awesome!!! You got my sub :D
Dude, you are awesome!!!!!!!! I love this!
It flies amazingly far and glides realy well
Just build one at the hospital where I'm at. And I really dig it!
I'm now working on a rc one thats slightly bigger than the previous one so I can build the stuf init needs! !
Thanks for your help and directions to build it!!
Hmm, Coroplast RC Omniwing? Sounds like an idea!
Would love to see your project.
wordreet With proper scale, maybe up to 6 ft wingspan, one could get the material to warp, then hot glue in place, work out the double surface and elevons. I am up to the challenge to try this material.
Trying to work out how I can get 2.4 x 1.2 mtr sheets home if I get them delivered to my work place.
You are a honest and awesome uploader, unlike batterycock over there.
dihedral and swept back....good for stability. cool planes....cool video. thanks
You are a funny guy... Actually a few years ago, I did buy a Chevy Van from my mother. It was all fixed up. No windows, all shag carpet inside. A kitchen and indeed a fold out bed. But I was always the victim of jokes about van and it's use, so I had to sell it.
I love you back!
Great idea! I would imagine that would provide some pretty strong launches, providing some good aerobatics.
Firstly, I AM on a random video spree, and your passion on short film made me stay, so congrats! This seems fast and interesting.
Secondly, the music video and overall aesthetic presentation is a relic from the 80's. The whole time I was hoping Beverly Hills Cop or some other Californian 80's cliche would make their presence known. Not to be offensive, I am too from the 80's period but it's REALLY old for 2012, kinda nostalgic.
Some fans have reported the they added a little vertical fin on the bottom on the center line to serve as a handle. I of course have been launching these for decades, and I am very comfortable with the launch.
Made the Omniwing kids love it thanks!
Wow! I just realized I think i live near where you launched those OmniWings!
Would love to see a video of some of your flights. Maybe something you could do in the future and the do a video response to my video. Glad you are showing this to your nieces and nephews.
cooool hobby. i use to make and fly paper airplanes when i was young.i have never seen this type of design before.
Impressive, using the full potential of paper
Thank you for your nice comment!
I got it first try and it works amazing!
Maybe you are making a reference to the Paperang. Yes the two wings are very similar in design but Dr. Hue of the Paperang goes about the build in a very different maner. I had the oppotunity to speak with Dr. Hue a number of years ago, and we were both amazed how we both came up with similar idea for a paper glider. Probably had to do with the fact that we both started Hang Gliding in the early 70's and pursued paper planes in an effort to better understand flight of flying wings.
With my omni wing if i throw it right on a slight slope it does loops at an angle and gets faster and faster like a geothermal glider i made it 30 mins ago throwing it in the garden , GOOD FUN !!! Usually i fly rc planes and even this amuses me lol
Grant: Flight is actually all about science. Whether it be a commercial aircraft, B2 Bomber, Sailplane, Hang Glider, Paraglider or yes... a paper airplane, a good amount of science is involved. I fly hang gliders and ultralight aircraft, and I take flight very serious. And yes, when I talk about my paper airplane designs, I am a bit serious. But I see all the same design science being incorporated into my paper wings. It is a hobby of which I admit that I am a bit obsessed. Go build one.
Thanks for the tips the Omni wing is a cool glider
Hi, thank you so much for making videos to show how to make omniwings, I've built all the omniwing, proto omniwings and even the advanced omniwing. Can you please post more videos for how to make other kinds of omniwing ? Thank you so much!
I like your design.
enjoyed the flight
This is cool! People are always gunna hate no matter what you do. Yet they are the ones with no ambition or character to do anything different than what everyone else does!
Make sure your twist is equal on each side. If twist is to the left try tuning in some extra washout into the right wing fy reflexing the trailing edge of the right wing up a little. But ultimately it comes down to making sure that each wing half has the same twist.
@ludigolub123 What you have discovered is that the OmniWing serves as an excellent platform from which one can make unlimited modifcations. That is what has captured my attention for over 3 decades of fiddling with the basic concept.
Best to you and happy flying.
You are correct. Any aircraft that is not powered is a glider, thus always descending through the surrounding air. The Advanced OmniWings shown in the video demonstrate a glide ratio of about 16 to 1. 16 feet forward for each foot of descent. Quite similar to the glide ratios of the modern flex wing hang gliders.
Great! Cant wait to try a simple one and have my grandson think I'm cool
dude that thing is so sick
I made this kind paper glider. I used black paper and I shaped it to look like B-2 bomber.
It flew well and stealthly......
....ok...I commented on this extremely famous vid...haha lol
Seems to be a bit snarky of a comment. 1 Million views, from a pretty small population of individuals that have an interest in paper airplanes. Certainly not as large of a population as MineCraft. Now move on JoJo, and see if you can even come close to ramping any single of your videos above 100 views. Question I have, why did you even click on the link to the video. I presume you have a curiosity about paper airplane flight. I do have a number of videos on my channel that shows how to build a variety Of OmniWing Paper Airplanes. Give it a try.... You might enjoy!
menamiketrx yes...ic but this video has been all over youtube fro like 2 years!!!!
Thank you for the comment! And you have discovered the greatest aspect of the OmniWing, is that it does serve as an excellent platform from which to pursue modifications. Eventually you will have your own unique design. We can call it the BorzovWing.
Many thanks for the reply!!!
You have learned well, by young ACCFMasterof2012. You will go far in life.
Thank you for your kind coments. Some builders of the OmniWin build little vertcal fin on the bottom side to serve as something to grab ahold of for launching.
This was cool nice video
@chrisbntz34 The little triangle (chunk) of folded paper that goes on the nose of the Proto-OmniWing is there. I watched in 720p and am able to see it. As far as the fold of the Proto-OmniWing, it follows the steps of the OmniWing up to a point. The Proto ends up with a narrower nose angle than the OmniWing, and most important difference, the Proto establishes washout at the tips with a single crude fold, where the Omni does so with the spanwise twist method. I hope I have been clear.
I have experimented with different weights and different finishes. If paper is to thick, it will be resistant to the twist procedure. Paper that is more resistant to humidity is great. So often I find the higher quality printer paper to be about the right weight, and have resistance to humidity while also allowing for the twisting procedure to establish washout.
There are very few that have great success with the Advanced OmniWing. It is quite a challenge. I appreciate your comment, and now it is time for you to get creative and see how far you can take this design with modifications of your own.
I have built the advanced omnwing and used less paper for the fuselage and i glided very good
Thanks for the good word bro. I don't mind the haters. They add to the view count just as well and I enjoy having a go at them.
Mostly I get comments about the flying and the wings, but some comment about my choice of background music, and usually it is negative comments about my choice of music. I am sure it is mainly a generational thing. Also, I have a limited volume of music of which I have access to use without banging against the copyright issues. I do hope you have enjoyed the OmniWing at the least. Just an old man making paper airplanes and presenting the best I can. I do appreciate you comment.
I appreciate you comment. The music issue is that I have access to a small library of non copyright music, thus my choices are limited.
very good job !
I like the music. Makes me want to dance. Might be a generational thing. I do hope you liked the way the OmniWings flew. Learn how to build them on my channel. Of course those videos also need better music.
you should try them out inside a big building, like a shopping mall or something like that, if you do it in there you should get better results, since the air isnt affecting the airplanes negatively
I went on extended vacation shortly after i commented. I just made it to the bottom of 400+ inbox..LOL. I flew from Bayou La Batre,AL to Portland Oregon, then drove back. I had some amazing flights at 8 too 10,000 feet elevation near wind farms! Unfortunately i didn't know my new camera/recorder wasn't working. operator not the camera.
wish i knew how 2 do this long time ago, all the nephews nieces loved staying over with me. But, I now have the grand nieces nephews. Front porch 14ft high. IDK how high second story window, but makes for a long flight. I see this as fun with them not about pick up line. My kids grown but they get a kick out of the young 1's amazement as well.
I appeciate your comment. As far as the music, it is what I have available that does not go up against copyright issues. Also, check out the other flight video on my channel showing flights off of Mount Nebo. I think you will enjoy. As far as marketing, when I started posting the OmniWing on RUclips, I simply wanted to get the info out before it died with me. Then videos were invited to be monitized with ads. And surprise.... a few bucks a day.... Pretty cool.
Not sure what "Normal Paper" is. But I always try to use a good quality printer paper. You want paper that is resistant to humidity, thus the finer the finish on the surface of the paper the better. For example, you colored construction paper, although it would be great to build wings with different colors, it does not stand up to abuse, and deforms with humidity.
I also try to use waste printer paper as well.
On my channel you can also see the OmniWing in flight off of some big mountains as well as my experimenting with catapult launch. Enjoy!
Obrigado pelo bom o comentário!
Be sure to check out the OmniWing Modifications video and the Advanced OmniWing Video Series. Best to you!
I actually make similar design but with a flattened nose. It's good for loops and acrobatics.
I appreciate you comment! My previous comment was an effort at humor.... Sometimes I fail.
The OmniWing did have a short bit in this movie but mostly was the Proto and Advanced. This was the very first video effort to show the OmniWing. Was shot by my brother and the camera viewer made it very difficult for him to follow the flight in the bright sunlight. So this is what I got. On my channel are a few other vidoes showing the OmniWings in flight.
Hey Mike,
I'm after a glider which is quite directional and stable but also has quite considerable range as it is flown in a large area indoors.
Which glider would you recommend for the job?
The OmniWings have a pretty low sink rate, but if you are looking for a wing for duration contest, there are wings out there that are more suitable for that task. Search You Tube for paper airplane duration records and you will find craft specific to that endeavor.
Impressive!
Hi menamiketx, I really like your videos. They are really good and always interesting to watch. So I was thinking about putting some really small propellers under each of the omniwings wings. Just some small ( really freaking small) propellers for just a little thrust would be perfect for this wing, but i don't know, would the weight of the propellers be to much for the for the wing or would it work?
I think it would be possible with some challenges. The center keel would have to be stiffened to withstand the compression forces of the wound band. Next challenge would be getting the thrust line correct. If you simply have the propeller thrust line based on the band running on either the top of the bottom of the wing, the thrust angle will be too high and will want to cause the wing to dive under power. Third is the rotational input from the prop causing the wing to turn. Worth a try???
LOL.... One would think, but we recently celebrated our 40th anniversary. I guess she really did not know what she was getting into, but right after we got married I started hang gliding and building paper airplanes. So what did she do. She decided to join in on the fun, and started flying with me on my tandem hang glider. Also, she now looks forward to the little check from Google each month for revenues collected. Whether it be hang gliding or mountain bikeing she has been by my side.
Some builders report that they at a little vertical fin downward on the centerline at the back of the keel to serve as a handle. Be sure to check my channel for the flight videos, that show me launching several OmniWings. I also have a technique for a hard toss for aerobatics, holding wing with thumb at nose and middle finger at back of keel. Then the hard toss. Still a hard technique to learn, but wing is capable of aerobatics doing loops and such.
Awesome vedio cool bro
The OmniWings are quite capable with open area flights. Also on my channel see flights off of Mount Nebo. In smaller areas the Proto OmniWing and the OmniWing are suitable, for classroom size flights, but the Advanced OmniWing needs a large arena. My Advanced OmniWing will fly the length of a Basketball court.
It is the the "Proud" OmniNerds!
