The Toei anime really shows Yami being the "King of Games" as he wins all forms of them, unlike the second series anime where he wins at Duel Monsters and Dungeon Dice Monsters
Before it was revealed that Dark Yugi was a separate soul named Atem, as a kid I always assumed that the Puzzle grained Yugi evil magic and as such, when he used its power he developed a split personality, creating his Dark counterpart in times of stress to fight the battles he was too scared to. Always assumed the series was gonna progress with Yugi coming to terms with the bad things he's done and learning how to channel the dark magic without scumming to evil, merging the 2 personalities into 1 confident but kind Yugi.

I will always love this version of Yugi...there is more character growth through the series, Yugi is much more adorable in both forms, and he is voiced by my favorite voice Actress Megumi Ogata! Who also played Kurama in Yu yu hakusho

People are always so surprised when they see the manga like "oh no how could Yami do this??!?!?!!?!!11" but you have to realize his soul was inside of a vessel of dark magic for 3000 (or 5000 acc to the anime) years, of course he gonna get corrupted
He was sadistic af. I kinda wish more emphasis was put on how terrified Yuugi was of him (as he admitted during Death-T) and didn’t want him to come out. The moment was nice anyway, but... it’s so small that most people wouldn’t really get it.
"What YuGiOh could have been", yeah, I do love how it turned out, it's one of the best selling and most played card games in the world for a reason, but I kinda wanna know how the series would have turned if the card game wasn't introduced. There was a lot of build up with Shadi, but he was immediately forgotten.
The series could be better, but probably not drastically. because after the table top rpg game with yami bakura, they kind of rebooted it and made it a marketing platform for selling cards (because fans couldn't get enough of the games that were shown in the manga, especially the card game.) the manga didn't have those drag out filler episodes like anime (for obvious reason.) I imagine it would still play out similarly to the manga, except all the conflicts aren't solved by the children card game alone. they would include some other stuff instead. but all the major conflicts should still remain the same, especially the millennial world arc. the bonus being this so called "season 0" doesn't warp the whole universe to be all about card game. it also include what are faithful to real world stuff, even mundane stuff. making it more relatable than children card game world like what we have now (except the millennial world arc)
When I was around 9-10 my mom took me to a bookstore and said I could get absolutely*ANYTHING.* I already knew about yugioh, (due to 4kids) because I watched it with my older brothers. The store sold yugioh in bunches. I got two books, the first one containing volumes 1, 2, and 3. The second one was volumes 4, 5, and 6. Welp, my mom never even bothered to check the back for the rating. ( It was rated for teens, but I never told her that ;) To this day I still have both books and laugh about it.
Omg I'd check them out in 5th grade from the school library because they thought I was in a higher grade, (I was kinda tall for my age) so I was mind-blown when I had read all of season 0 and learned it was a bit more mature lol
always has been... at least until they kind of soft rebooted it into marketing platform for selling cards. This is why western fans call it "Season 0" because 4kids couldn't dub it for them. people who could access Japanese version, or even subbed version don't have to deal with 4kids BS
I preferred how the early versions of the manga implied that Yami Yugi was Yugi's negative impulses fleshed out through the power of the millennium puzzle over Yami Yugi being the spirit of a pharaoh who just so happened to have the same type of hairdo. At least with the former, you could do alot more with the story on a psychological level and tactical level with each new chapter introducing different games. With Bandit Keith, w'ed have a guy who would cheat by playing Russian roulette using a combination of blanks and live rounds and fixing the revolver to fire when he desired. With Weevil/Haga, you'd have some guy who could play board games using dangerous insects as his game pieces. Rex/Ryuzuki would be a vid gamer who just so happened to have his mind fucked silly after watching Jurassic Park in the 90's, thus feeding into his hard on for Dinosaurs. Anzu/Tea would be a dance fighter with a knack for dance and rhythm games, Bakura was already established to be fond of tabletop RPG's, Marik uses the millenium rod to play his personal human gaming pieces in elaborate life sized games of death, all the while having a harem of women and men who were the love interests of those he defeated. Jaden/Judai would be a comics fanboy who grew up with the Vs. system and Heroclix. Aki would be a psychic who played tetris using buildings and other large items. the options are bountiful.
I've gone over the first volume for a while and their isn't much of a height difference. Maybe if you count that the hair looked like it poofed out a bit more, but the only real stylistic difference is that Yami Yugi looked psychotic every time he emerged, at least until the School festival chapter where Takahashi put more emphasis on designing Yami Yugi with a leaning more towards his confident persona than his malicious. As far as the dual souls I would agree as far as the Dragon Cards arc where Yugi's Soul was trapped in the Soul Jar, and Yami Yugi stepped in to fight Imori, but that was 6 volumes in. There may have been some leaning towards the two souls aspect when Yugi met Shadi in the museum arc where Shadi Kept provoking "The Other Yugi" to come out, but that seemed more like he was trying to piss off Yugi enough for the millennium puzzle to bring out his dark side. Prior to the Idea of establishing that the Yami Yugi was the Spirit of the Pharaoh, the manga's earlier volumes was at least going towards the idea of Yugi's negative inhibitions being fleshed out as a separate character.
@@rob19ny there isn't meant to be any height difference in the manga at all, the difference is minimal and accountable for by that he just stands taller and more confidently. Many images in the manga of the two yugis standing together, such as in the ceremonial battle, have no height difference between them, which is as it should be. Irrespective if he was a different personality or another soul, in either case that shouldn't cause the host body to reversibly grow a foot, that makes no sense at all and really irks me in the Duel Monsters anime. The differences in appearance between the two Yugis is only for the reader to better distinguish them, hence the in universe characters only notice the difference via his disposition, not that he magically grew a foot. In the beginning of the manga it was left somewhat ambiguous as to what Yami-Yugi actually was. Anzu speculated for awhile he was just an alternate personality the puzzle brought out. Also, considering Yami-Yugi is able to access all of Yugi's relationships and memories and graft them onto his own, such as calling Yugi's grandfather his grandfather for instance, with otherwise no memory or backstory of his own, I'd say it wasn't immediately established from the off that he was an entirely different soul.
This Yugi was something that played every Shadow Game. The Ferris wheel bomb episode and the hospital episode I really like how he used it against them. Plus "The Door of Darkness has Opened."
One of my favorite aspects of Dark Yugi's design is his eyes. It's not just maniacal, it's as if there's a raging fire burning in them (especially visible around 4:16 in this video). Any opponents who look into his eyes will see hell looking back at them.
Ok my best friend thinks of me as a Really intimidating guy when we duel. So much so in fact, that when I call him Yami Yugi's theme plays with the phrase "Sa Gamu no Jikunda!" At the start.
Junuchi is so unbelievably lucky that he made up for his bullying *before* Dark Yugi was present. Can you imagine what the shadow game for that would have been? Like, a Jigsaw style puzzle or something and he'd probably lose an arm.
Bruh, Kaiba did the Jigsaw style puzzle in Season 0 and the manga already. Duel Monsters just glossed over that arc. One of the game was the number puzzle that force all 4 of their hands against a guillotine.
Great video! I'm glad you did Season 0, haven't watched it in a long time! Have to say I loved Yami's eyes during the first episode, they definitely set the tone for that season. See ya later~!!!

In my opinion in Yu-Gi-Oh season 0 yugi was much weaker in the series and Yami or dark Yugi was very powerful and creepy when I was younger he used to give me nightmares all the time
If you consider the rules of spirit channeling from Phoenix Wright (which i don't know is true with the real rules of it) Yugi's body changing, but not the hair makes more sense than in the traditional anime.........doesn't explain why Yugi's hair is like that though
I wish someone would make a top 20 most improbable haircuts in games and anime... We've got Yugi, Seymour from FF X, probably some guy in Phoenix Wright like Queen Ga'Ran...
season 0 has 2 be 1 of my favorite seasons. yes it's graphic and dark but it reminds me so much of dangaropa and kanji which are also high stakes games.
fun fact: in the legendary dragon saga, when dark yugi activates "the seal of orichalcos" he takes on a personality closer to dark yugi from season 0, even sharing the same red and purple eyes
Never really looked into Yugioh when growing up, but what I have seen about season 0 and the manga actually has me kinda interested in looking into the series (even if it's just briefly).
For the anime profiles(or if you're completely done with those) could you do Son Gohan or Future Trunks from the Dragon Ball series, Spectra Phantom from the Bakugan series, Kyoya from the Beyblade Metal series, or Eren from Attack on Titan. Also it's crazy how many Yugioh character profiles you've done over the years, so congratulations on the 100th episode.
I have watched season 0 twice, and each time those dark games are just as good to see play out. To this day, my favorite one is where he massively messes with a teacher so she is convinced her face is cracking and reapplies yet more make up--unaware there are no such cracks and the other teachers talk about her behind her back. Another high note is the episode on the school roof, with Anzu's life on the line and the spirit has to ensure the ankh's (well I think they were, cannot remember right now) from cracking. A real turning point there.
"Yuuugiiii~ Solve the millenium puzzle and you'll live happily ever after~ Muah hahahahah." Love season zero and I completely lament that it never got an English dub
5:34 I like how it's called "一つ目ジャイアント(Pronunciation : Hitotsu-Me Giant" which means "giant cyclops", where on the card it literally says "サイクロプス(pronunciation : Cyclops)"
His character had a much more apparent "schoolboy crush" aura about him, with the way his eyes were drawn and how he interacts with everyone. Duel Monsters Bakura was kinda klutzy (still love him tho) but in a cute way. Doesn't erase the fact that either way he gets fan girls.
Honestly, a comparison between the manga and anime shadow duels of the Toei version would be cool (including motives, the game itself and the results/punishment).
You know I think this is what Raphael meant when he said Atem could’ve been evil 😈 and he doesn’t remember guess what Atem doesn’t remember the Toei Version (Dramatic Music 🎵)
the original concept, was so much more interesthing on it's own. But I am also glad that we got the one we got. I would be cool to see more of the original concept tough
I really do wish they continued on with season 0. I feel like the lack of focus on duel monsters would’ve meant a stronger focus on character development on storyline. If duel monsters wasn’t a thing, I feel like it could’ve been one of the greatest manga/anime ever created.
My favorite games he played would be the one with the watch guy, the one with the tiger lady, and the one he played with the guy blowing up the Ferris wheel
Bro did you even read the manga? Yami straight up killed some people and lit a guy on fire. IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING. Also, this vid totally came out on my birthday- thanks for the gift of my favorite version of Yami.
This should be a longer series and everyone in the comment seem to 100% agree with this. A remake of this season 0 would be very awsome to see in the hands of the person that made this Season 0. I just wanna see how far they could go with the Yami Yugi, he seems very badass and is nobody bitch at the sametime. When you have such an amazing character that can be remember then you knows that you have done a fantastic job as a creator of that character.
Yami Yugi in Toei version have a good voice (like Byron Love in inazuma eleven) but he is damn ruthless when he give a penalty game: transform Trudge in a wimpy man, threw alcohol for burning a thug who take tea as a hostage, transform a thief in a living clowkwork... i don't want annoy him otherwise i'm dead
No need to apologize, this was a toned down adaptation of the Original manga. The anime just skipped past the Death-T- arc and went straight to Duelist Kingdom. And also heavily toned stuff down and added more content. Then 4kids came along and censored the censored-censored version. And if anything, Manga Atem is far superior to his anime counterpart because he was actually allowed to play other things that aren’t card games. (Which defiles the whole name of the series if he’ the king of ‘one’ game)
I’m watching yugioh toei the second time and is COMEPLETELY diffrent than the first time I watched it (for example:the millennium puzzle was the only millennium item I saw the first time but the second time I saw the key and the scale)
Is kinda weird that there are only 3 manga in English that use this specific theme. I can't recall the name of the other two, but I've read them. After that we only get gambling Mangas
The first 7 volumes of the manga were based on games in general like ice hockey, monster chess and my favorite... the shut the @#$% up game. more violent and more versatile it was a splendid read
You said that Ushio beat up Yugi the next day when he didn’t have the money, but it was actually that same day. As Jounouchi and Honda we’re still bruised and hurt from the beating they received.
Supreme King Judai for once simple reason: The doors of darkness really only open once someone cheats, usually when they start losing. Supreme King Judai would have NO problem taking Season 0 Dark Yugi in a game of Duel Monsters. But if it was something other than Duel Monsters, I'd have to give it to Dark Yugi.
@@nobgs4505 no because in some of chapters yug says in his game of darknesses one with better will Will win (like at first chapter yugi say greedier you are more powerful you will strike the knife and Egyptian dude says too more powerful the heart better chance you win that is why yugi would win)

this is my favorite season and it is great that you chose to do this for an episode
I don't think id wanna walk down a dark ally and see dark yugi there
Naw, as long as you're not doing anything shitty, he's cool. Rather him than a mugger
To be honest, I'd rather him than some mugger
To be honest this original antihero Yami Yugi was way cooler than in the second series anime
If you consider the rules of spirit channeling from Phoenix Wright (which i don't know is true with the real rules of it) Yugi's body changing, but not the hair makes more sense than in the traditional anime.........doesn't explain why Yugi's hair is like that though
glue, paint, lots of plastic and years of model kit building experience
hairspray from 20+ different brands, as well as delicate and specific use of multiple hair dyes. And something to make his hair waterproof.
I wish someone would make a top 20 most improbable haircuts in games and anime... We've got Yugi, Seymour from FF X, probably some guy in Phoenix Wright like Queen Ga'Ran...
He got struck by lightning which made his hair stiff
season 0 has 2 be 1 of my favorite seasons. yes it's graphic and dark but it reminds me so much of dangaropa and kanji which are also high stakes games.
IT DOESS
fun fact: in the legendary dragon saga, when dark yugi activates "the seal of orichalcos" he takes on a personality closer to dark yugi from season 0, even sharing the same red and purple eyes
Never really looked into Yugioh when growing up, but what I have seen about season 0 and the manga actually has me kinda interested in looking into the series (even if it's just briefly).
wow 100 episodes congrats man these are awesome!!!!!! heres to 100 more
For the anime profiles(or if you're completely done with those) could you do Son Gohan or Future Trunks from the Dragon Ball series, Spectra Phantom from the Bakugan series, Kyoya from the Beyblade Metal series, or Eren from Attack on Titan.
Very good video TGS!I'd have to see Toei Yami is my favorite version of him and I loved the season. Can you do Yuya Sakaki for your next Profile?
"Yuuugiiii~ Solve the millenium puzzle and you'll live happily ever after~ Muah hahahahah."
Love season zero and I completely lament that it never got an English dub
You shouldve mentioned in the backstory that dark yugi is an ancient Egyptian spirit , he said so in one of yami no games
Always love character profiles, this one is defiantly a favorite XD
I Personally Really Loved Season 0! I Wish They Would Have Continued It Or At Least Made More Episodes.
200,000 yen...thats almost a whole dollar
bgpeters22 😂😂
That’s roughly $200*
It's actually roughly 1798.00 USD. Almost 2 thousand dollars for beating up two kids. Like wow.
LunarCat42 and 200,000yen worth more in japan then the US too
Well actually adjusted by inflation, it was a whole lot more!
Wow so cool! Nice video. I wanna give season zero a shot now ^^
I always loved this series. I wish it would get more attention.
I couldn't help but laugh at your "that's what she said".
Trivia: this first parte of the manga is heavily inspired by the manga "magic boy BT" I really recommend
wow that's crazy 100 episode
Honestly season 0 is the only reason I'm still into yugioh
the difference between season 0 card game rules and the Konami card game rules.
Season 0: people talk bullshit to win
Konami: people play by the rules
"Konami: play by the rules" Ha! Tell that to Duelist Kingdom.
IPlayPokemon 64 yeah but those rule are not real rules
Thomas Murphy I know, but at the time, the game in real life didn't actually have any rules
IPlayPokemon 64 true
IPlayPokemon 64 yeah i remember Yugi VS Mako Tsunami and i kinda think Tsunami was talking bullshit no wonder he came 3rd in the regionals lol
5:34 I like how it's called "一つ目ジャイアント(Pronunciation : Hitotsu-Me Giant" which means "giant cyclops", where on the card it literally says "サイクロプス(pronunciation : Cyclops)"
what about bakura toei version ?
He just have fuckin horns and one of em ,exe smiles lmao
Bakura is just a avarage dick game master in your table top game. With dark magic ofc.
Kaiba Toei Version?
His character had a much more apparent "schoolboy crush" aura about him, with the way his eyes were drawn and how he interacts with everyone. Duel Monsters Bakura was kinda klutzy (still love him tho) but in a cute way. Doesn't erase the fact that either way he gets fan girls.
It would be cool to get this as an uncensored dub with the original English voice actors.
you have come a long way
if your wondering yami-no means dark or shadow in Japanese
Gamer Bro Yami means dark, yomi is obscure, kage is shadow and kuro black.
Honestly, a comparison between the manga and anime shadow duels of the Toei version would be cool (including motives, the game itself and the results/punishment).
Imagine if we got this yugioh as a full show instead of the show based on the card game
You know I think this is what Raphael meant when he said Atem could’ve been evil 😈 and he doesn’t remember guess what Atem doesn’t remember the Toei Version (Dramatic Music 🎵)
Pokémon Trainer N he wasn’t evil he believed in dark justice
Pokémon Trainer N I’d say Atem is evil as in the guy that killed most of his slave
the original concept, was so much more interesthing on it's own.
I find it interesting that Yugi used monster cards in the first series anime that he used in the second. More so in the movie though.
Bro did you even read the manga? Yami straight up killed some people and lit a guy on fire. IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING. Also, this vid totally came out on my birthday- thanks for the gift of my favorite version of Yami.
I think season 0 is a perfect name for the original series
I can't belive that season 0 was a toned down version of the manga
Yeah, Duel Monsters is even more toned down QwQ.
really like this dark yugi.
Awesome!
Sorry to say but this is the more accurate version of Yugi.
Yeah, Toei allowed him to keep some personality instead of just being a vessel for card game sales-- err, I mean, for Yami Yugi.
I've never heard of this before
I’m watching yugioh toei the second time and is COMEPLETELY diffrent than the first time I watched it (for example:the millennium puzzle was the only millennium item I saw the first time but the second time I saw the key and the scale)
The Best Yugi scene is him trying to save tristan and joey from the bully then it shows all three of them on the ground beat up but still smiling
YES! YES! WATCHED ALL 100 :D
Is kinda weird that there are only 3 manga in English that use this specific theme. I can't recall the name of the other two, but I've read them. After that we only get gambling Mangas
Idk why "ghost" made me laugh so much. Like... Just ghost lol
Ushio is someone that should get his own video. The Hall Monitor turned Sector Security Officer.
with the new battles of legend packs do a timelord trivia!!!
Did you say.... T I M E L O R D
Ah, the season where Yami would probably kill a man for looking at him.
This show sounds amazing
I swear that guy with the big eyebrows is Officer Tetsu Trudge from the 5D's series
The first 7 volumes of the manga were based on games in general like ice hockey, monster chess and my favorite... the shut the @#$% up game. more violent and more versatile it was a splendid read
I like the art style
Can you make a Video about the Different Games? D: Would be so awesome..
A good series
The clock game really set my teeth on edge. Like that's way worse than some blood. Thats mechanics and leather melting and merging with your skin.
OH HELL YEAH, YOU KNOW IM DOWN FOR THIS
You said that Ushio beat up Yugi the next day when he didn’t have the money, but it was actually that same day. As Jounouchi and Honda we’re still bruised and hurt from the beating they received.
I like dark Yugi in season 0 more then the newer seasons
Season 0 atem yugi vs supreme king judai what do you think? Who would win and why?
Grey World season 0 Atem wasn’t evil he believes in dark justice remember they’re not innocent people
No Bgs Atem is the king of games supreme king tied to Axel
Dark Yugi was a bit of a badass
I thought he was sixteen according to the episode with that game show
Yugi also duels three more times in the toei anime
antione gibbs
P
congratz
Where's the character profile of Zarc?
Can you do the people that hold the shadow charm from gx
The soul keeper Darkrai I believe he already did then along with the items.
