When you think that this was released in 1972. Uriah heep are superb versatile musicians and so original with the great vocals of David Byron & the superb Gary Than on Bass In my opinion URIAH HEEP are the best always have been in my life
This song wasn't on the album. It was a track that didn't make the cut for Demons And Wizards, and it was included as a bonus track when the album was remastered. Other songs to check out by Uriah Heep are Gypsy, Easy Livin', the epic July Morning, Look At Yourself, Rainbow Demon and Circle Of Hands.
Hi, John. I'm João from Brazil. The bassist was the extraordinary Gary Thain and it really is the band's only song from this era, where the bass is dominant. Unfortunately he died early at age of 27 while still part of the band. Please listen to the "Demons and Wizards" and "Magician's Birthday" albuns. They're represent Uriah Heep's finest hour.
The album sleeve art is classic Roger Dean. He did a few for Yes around this time too. This album, "Magician's Birthday" are peak Uriah Heep. Their Live album from this period is exceptional too.
Wow - a reaction to Why. That was unexpected. Thank you :) Want more Heep? Try The Wizard; Time To Live; Circle Of Hands; Weep In Silence; Wonderworld and/or Echoes In The Dark. Heavy ones are Shadows Of Grief or Look At Yourself. Perfect ballads are Rain and Your Turn To Remember. Best known songs from their early era are Lady In Black; Easy Livin'; Stealin' and July Morning.
"Demons & wizards" was the first Uriah Heep album I ever bought & heard (though I came to the band late, early 2000s) and THIS song is one of my favorites from them overall... despite the lyrics. I mean, they've written some much better ones, but the melodies on "Why" are catchy as hell. Especially that bridge and the outro. Love those bits.
URIAH HEEP simply BRITISH LEGENDS

Great song that gets very little love. Was the loudest show I ever saw back in '77. LOUD!

Mark Clark was the bassist playing in this recording before Gary Thain.
