    Hello and welcome back to In the Kitchen with Matt, I am your host Matt Taylor, today I am going to show you how to make a chocolate cake, mmm yummy. I had a request to make a chocolate cake, so here we go, this chocolate cake is super moist, super delicious, really amazing recipe, it I can do it, you can do it, let’s get baking. First let’s go ahead and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. or 176 Celsius. And now what we are going to do is we are going to mix together all of our dry ingredients, and I am going to list all of the ingredients down below in the description, 2 cups of all purpose flour, 2 cups of white granulated sugar, yep that is a lot of sugar, ¾ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tsp. of salt, 1 and ½ tsp. of baking soda, 2 tsp. of baking powder, and with a whisk let’s go ahead and whisk this up really well, you could also sift this all together if you like. All right that is great, add our milk one cup of milk, ½ cup of oil, 2 large eggs, 2 tsp. of vanilla extract, now I am going to switch to a hand mixer, you could still use your whisk, it gets a bit clumpy or you could use a wooden spoon to do this. Okay at this point I have one cup of water here, and I got it really really hot almost boiling, I just put it in the microwave for about a minute and a half, it’s really hot, now with the mixer on low speed, we are going to slowly incorporate our really hot water, pour the rest of it in there. Ok so the hot water what it is going to do is it is going to thin out the batter, and it is going to help to be moist and get nice an fluffy for us. Don’t be alarmed if the batter seems to liquidy that’s okay, and kind of finish it off with your spatula. This is going to be for 2 9-inch cake pans, and so it is going to be a double layered cake, and what I did is I prepped my pan this is a brand new wilton nonstick pan, um but I still like to prep it, I just put some butter, softened butter all around in the inside, and then put about a tablespoon of flour in there, and you just kind of tap it around, like this, and the flour, goes everywhere and then you get rid of the rest of it, it’s really simple to do, and I recommend prepping your pans, because we don’t want our cake to stick, when we want to pull it out of the pans. We want the batter to be evenly spread in between these two. What I am going to do is I am just going to take a cup, and we will do one cup of cake batter in this one, and then one cup over in this one, and so on, until we are evenly incorporated, so I will come back when that is done...

    I made this a few days ago for my mom's birthday. it was the best homemade cake recipe I ever made. Even the frosting was delicious. Usually with other cakes we scrape the frosting off but this made you want to clean your plate. And its not even too sweet like most cakes. Its moist, chocolatey and delicious. The napkin trick was a success too. I was able to decorate the cake without being messy. Even my dad who tends to stay away from sweets for health reasons couldn't help himself when it came to this cake, every one loved it. I doubled the cake recipe and got 3 layers and 1 dozen cupcakes. I left the frosting recipe as the same and it was enough for everything.

    I found this video so helpful! The hot water trick really helped make the cake so moist and even spongey. I added about half a cup of almost boiling hot water right at the end since the recipe I used was for a smaller amount of batter. This trick will help with any cake batter! I'm so thankful for this video ❤️

      So glad you liked the video and that is was helpful. If you are a coffee drinker use hot coffee instead of hot water next time. :) Some people love it! I don't drink coffee and never have it on hand, so I don't use it. But I know lots of people do. It helps bring out a little more chocolate flavor from the cocoa powder.

    I’m a newbie in baking and it’s my first time to bake a moist chocolate cake. I used your recipe as well as the buttercream frosting. I really love the cake, very moist and just enough sweetness. My family and friends loved it. My only problem was my buttercream, maybe I wasn’t able to mix it thoroughly that’s why it was grainy. 😂 i will definitely use this recipe again. Glad I found your video.

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  4 года назад +1

      Hello, Cecille! Glad you tried it out and were successful. Did you use regular sugar or powdered/confectioner's/icing sugar for the chocolate buttercream frosting? If you did use powdered sugar, try mixing it a bit more, that will give more time for the sugar to incorporate better. Maybe add just a bit more milk as well. Also was your butter room temperature or was it kind of cold? Room temp butter will definitely help. Those are a few tips that can help make a more smooth buttercream. :)

    • @cecillebalugo1578
      @cecillebalugo1578 4 года назад +1

      In The Kitchen With Matt I did use powdered sugar, I think I’ll have to mix it a little longer next time. Regarding the butter, I actually used margarine stick because my mom wrongly bought margarine instead of butter and I was just so excited to try your recipe so I just went ahead and used it 😂. It’s cold, so I waited for an hour I believe before mixing it. Do you think the margarine might be the culprit of why it’s grainy?

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  4 года назад

      @@cecillebalugo1578 Ahh, it very well could be the margarine, while you can substitute margarine for butter in the frosting, depending on the type of margarine will depend on the results. Normally you would want to use margarine that has comparable fat to butter. But I bet you just needed to mix it for a few more minutes. Next time you make it, after you are done mixing, dip a spoon in it and taste how grainy it is. If still graining, keep mixing, and add a little bit of milk or water to help dissolve the sugar crystals. :)

    Hi Matt! Very nice simple but yummy chocolate cake! I never leveled mine as a kid either. They kinda fell over and I experimented with blue frosting and black walnut and other stuff my Mama let me. But I was the only girl with four hungry younger Bros and my parents and as long as it tasted good believe me no one cared what it looked like lol! I started just making 9x13 cakes but I got all the stuff recently to make a two layer coconut cake. Hope I can keep it afloat 40yrs later🎂🥥 I wanted to ask you...did you use any coffee in your cake batter? I didn't see any but thought I'd give you a little too I learned from my Mom. If you replace some of your hot water with brewed coffee your cake will be even richer and more chocolatey. It won't be mocha...unless you want it in which case you'd use coffee in your icing too. It really works! Sometimes I use partial brown sugar too which also deepens the flavor. There are huge chocolate lovers here among my grandkids and daughter so seeing this reminds me I need to make chocolate cake too! My granddaughters 17th birthday with a houseful of young adults seems perfect! No one else likes to cook so I hope I feel up to it. Thankyou for reminding me with your lovely recipe and demo!😊🍀🤘🏼

    Yum!😋 Going to make it for my brothers birthday. Can u use more than 2 eggs🤔, must u use oil and must u use unsweetened cocoa powder.

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  3 года назад

      Thanks, yes it is recommended that you don't change the recipe. why would you want to use more eggs? You can use melted butter instead of oil. yes, you need the unsweetened cocoa powder.

    I came across your channel today and saw this recipe on your website and gave it a go. It tastes okay, not moist though, I'll give it another go. Oooh I didn't make the frosting just the cake. My cake tastes fine but had this crack at the top what could be the reason for this? Thanks! And I'm in love with your recipes/channel

    • @naylasaid4789
      @naylasaid4789 2 года назад +1

      And the top is not even

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  2 года назад

      Your oven temperature is probably too hot. That will create an uneven cake as well as cracking. You also might have cold spots inside the oven, meaning it doesn't have the same temp throughout. If it wasn't moist, you may have measured the ingredients incorrectly. Are you using American Standard cup measurements or metric?

    • @inthekitchenwithmatt
      @inthekitchenwithmatt  3 года назад +1

      You are welcome! Yep it sure will, you will get about 24 cupcakes from this recipe. The baking time will be less. 18 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. :) Bake at the same temp 350 F/176 C.

      Awesome, Joe! I am glad you keep making it. Yep it should make right around 24 cupcakes. You will bake them for a little less time about 5 minutes less. Just check them with a toothpick first after about 18 minutes then go from there.

      Sure! Bake it at the same temperature. The time should be close to the same, check it at around 30 minutes with a toothpick, probably take between 30 and 35 minutes. :)
