@@collectibles4u i used to bowl candlepin alot, i was in 2 leagues for many years 70's, 80's and into the 90's. my average only got to 105 which is decent for this sport. it's a tuff game with the small balls and skinny pins and the scores and averages are nowhere near tenpin. it's almost as hard as golf to be consistent at.
@@gr8t1bobo i think you would like it. so the balls, pins and even the lane is different. the lane is still 60' from foul line to headpin but maple all the way not like tenpin which is maple and then transitions to pine after10' and no oil pattern to deal with. you get 3 shots at the rack of ten, a strike is still a strike and a spare is a spare and scored the same as big ball bowling and if you're still shooting after 2 balls the third ball would be for pin count. the scores are no where near big ball bowling and a good league bowler average is 90 to low 100's, the pros average in the 120's. strikes are not as frequent and a perfect 300 game in this sport has never happened. a perfect score in this would be nothing less than a ten in every box. you'll also notice that the fallen pins remain on the deck as long as they remain behind the deadwood line and that helps or can hinder a spare or ten count conversion. the deadwood line is just in front of the headpin spot. unfortunately the sport is dying off due to lack of interest , real estate land values and covid is not helping. the league i was recently in was mostly old guys like me, the young people have other thing yo do i guess.
Reminds me of Saturdays when my grandfather watched candlepin matches. I don’t think anyone in that alley other than the bowlers is less than 70 years old.
Honestly, this is a foreign concept in all of the places of the USA where I lived. I take it that it is a New England or Mid-Atlantic variant of bowling?
This is so awesome! I love when they use the fallen pins or "woods" to their advantage for a spare. That should be in regular bowling. It'll be me more fun🤙
I'm in my late 50's, Learned how to bowl & grew up in the Midwest and I never heard of this game!!! Seems to be harder to knock all the pins down with one ball!!!
that is why it is by far the most challenging there will never be a perfect game they even made a machine to try and get a perfect game lol the machine didnt even come close
for a lot of us up here it's the only bowling we know, although tenpin does exist in some spots also. i'm 71 yrs old and have bowled all my life but with this covid thing it's dwindling. this bowling show on boston TV was huge and enjoyed by many for over 30 yrs.
Duckpin video and now this, within minutes of each other. What did I do!?!? What video did I click that destroyed the algorithm that leads me to be submitted to these wildly over attended competitions 30 years down the line?
I tried out for the show sometimes. Made it to the finals twice. Never made it on. Besides, Tom Olzsta would pretty much turn me to dust if I went against him. That guy was automatic.
@@frontdesk6225 I bowled at Colonial in Worcester. There was the first round. The the "finals" (thats how I think it was referred to as). I forget how many made it to the "finals". But I made it twice.

please those guys bowling that joke of a game called 10 pin make tons and tons of money in each tournament like $20,000 and some tournaments paid out more than that whoever bowls pro in candlepin should be getting the big money since its a thousand times harder
At first you're all like this is like old timey bowling then 5 minutes later you're completely invested on who is going to win and you want to play yourself.
It was to slow them down a bit to fill the hour time slot. There are many occasions when a slower than usual second string put them back to alternating lanes in the third string.
Candlepin bowling originated in Nova Scotia. It's popularity eventually worked it's way through New England. It's a serious sport for New Englanders and is super fun!!
@Kevin r Sounds like you've never bowled candlepins (or duckpins)... Since there are no finger holes in the ball, the oil buildup will prevent the bowler from maintaining a proper grip on the ball - that's why they wipe it off...
oil would be the worst thing for candlepin but as it turns out some places are starting to put oil on the lanes which sucks because believe it or not when the oil is on the lane if you have any spin it does not take to the lane just stays straight
I feel like I'm watching inter-dimensional cable and stumbled across something like bowling as we know it, but not quite.
it's saturday afternoon in 2021 and i'm able watching candlepin again. thnx.
yes, this came on my recommended feed today also.
I'm right there with you 🤣
I really wish we had candle pin in the south

First time seeing this style of bowling. I am 50 years old.
Same here
Me as well.
It’s mostly a New England thing. We grew up with this type over big ball bowling.
42 and same here
its the 1st type of bowling invented
Every time the host says "wood" I hear Beavis and Butt-head laugh.
Then this happens.....30:30
Thanks Algorithm.
I never knew this existed. I didn't know I needed it, either.
try it you might like it, when you're in the boston area or maine or new hampshire.

That is what was the demise of bowling…the bowling alleys never promoted to the younger crowd.
I've never seen this before, but this was....awesome! Thank you!
@First Last haha, glad we have some smart asses watching this too! 🤣
Brings back memories. I bowled in several leagues and used to go watch these when they were at a local lane.
Honestly, this is a foreign concept in all of the places of the USA where I lived. I take it that it is a New England or Mid-Atlantic variant of bowling?
I'm a ten-pin bowler but candlepin is so much fun and a great challenge!
its the ultimate challenge when it comes to bowling
never seen or heard of this. its amazing! heard of and seen duck pins, but this is cool too. cheers!
This is so awesome! I love when they use the fallen pins or "woods" to their advantage for a spare. That should be in regular bowling. It'll be me more fun🤙
I remember bowling these in Framingham MA when I was a kid.
The camera caught the ref not paying attention. Dreaming about Aruba, I bet!
Glad your situation has been resolved and I do hope you can continue this format and 60FPS option as well.
I've seen 5 pin bowling but I never have seen this before!!😀. This is awesome!! Looks like way more fun than normal bowling
yes, it's pretty much a new england and maritime provinces of canada. it's a lot easier for kids, the elderly and handicapped people to do.

7:39 They showed the wrong lane :/
Wait a minute this is a real thing I thought it was a joke 38 years old never seen this
Let's bring this back ASAP this is cool
1st bowling game created and by far the toughest
It’s pretty much softball for guys
If Phil wouldn't throw so hard he would be able to take down more pins. Just punching right on through doesn't give you much effort to take them down.
Probably banking on ricochet action for the majority of the knockdowns.
he had a bad day usually he threw a lot bigger scores for a 3 game total i should know lol i was there plus im his oldest son

Didn't Dave Richards face Paul Berger and Berger shot that historic 500 a couple of weeks later on?
ESPN the Ocho
why did they bowl back to back frames on the same lane
It was to slow them down a bit to fill the hour time slot. There are many occasions when a slower than usual second string put them back to alternating lanes in the third string.
When did Dave Richards make his first appearance?
i've been alive 46 years... i've never seen this. like ever. is this one of those mandela effect things?
Depending on where you live you'll never hear about candlepin bowling. Its a very small region of the U.S. that has it.
@@codyphillips3133 I live in Texas. We dont import electricity, guess it's not a surprise we dont import sports.

Mandela effect bowling
Is it different from duck pin?
I think its hilarious that they actually use a towel to rub the ball as if oil will effect them like a bowling ball. Lol.
@Kevin r Sounds like you've never bowled candlepins (or duckpins)... Since there are no finger holes in the ball, the oil buildup will prevent the bowler from maintaining a proper grip on the ball - that's why they wipe it off...
Oil affects the grip.
They’re getting any dust or oil OFF the ball. Like basketball players rubbing the bottom of their shoes.
the towel is to get rid of any dust and grease from when the ball is in the pit and on the ball return
Why am I here?
What the heck decade is this?
dude its 1992
dont suppose many hecklers in this sport after the 1st incident
you would be surprised
Is this different than duck pin bowling?
I think duckpins are shorter and wider than 10-pins. Candle-pins are the same height as 10-pins only skinnier.
And they don't quack!
Guessing they don't lay oil patterns on the lanes 7:00
I don't think they oil the lanes at all in Candlepin.
no not at all. candlepin lanes are all maple from the approach, foul line and all the way to the pin plate.
@@steveperry1344 Thank you for the info
