      @sionadias2931 don't bother with formuals. They don't exist generally, don't pay attention to them. That's just Andy's way of trying to explain better. Look at sentences, and you will pick it up along the way naturally. Listen to his explanation and pay attention to sentences. No need to remember formulas at all. If english isn't your native language, think of it the same way you learned English. You didn't learn those formuals either... you pick it up along the way

    I'm amazed your stuff doesn't get more popular. It's so high quality and well put together. Thanks so much for this series!!! I guess it kinda makes sense, as the amount of people learning Japanese at any given time is probably tremendously lower compared to most other things.
    -
    I have a question for you Andy. I'm combining your series with learning through Lingodeer's Japanese program. From their examples, and several other sources, I've heard the O *particle* pronounced as such, and not "wo", yet I think I heard you pronounce it as "wo" several times. Is it "o" or "wo" when being used as a particle? :S Sorry if this came up in a previous lesson and I just forgot it.

    • @Emot10ns
      @Emot10ns 4 года назад +15

      If he pronounces it as "wo," it is probably just stylistic or a mistake. You will hear it pronounced as wo often in songs or media just to stylize it but in conversation, it is pronounced "o."

    • @ToKiniAndy
      @ToKiniAndy  4 года назад +112

      Thanks! Considering I've only been doing this for 1 year, I'm actually quite satisfied with the level of exposure this channel is getting! I do hope it continues to grow though! =)
      を is often pronounced similar to "wo" for emphasis. If you REALLY want to emphasis the direct object, you can say it this way. I pronounce it this way to emphasis that it is the を particle I am using, as this is easier for learners to hear. Many Japanese teachers will do this.
      In actually conversation I don't pronounce it this way unless someone didn't hear me correctly and I want to emphasis the direct object of my action to someone.
      I hope that helps!

    • @archit20095
      @archit20095 Год назад +6

      @@ToKiniAndy I feel that "wo" comes out more easily for me... So, can I just pronounce it as "wo"? I hope there will be no eyebrows raised at me if I pronounce it like that....

    • @KiyaNene
      @KiyaNene Год назад +8

      @@archit20095 People will definitely understand you, but your accent will stand out from repeated usage, I think it's just best to work on it now when it's easier, since you're a beginner, than have a bad habit that's hard to get rid of in the future.

    A little fun rhyme I learnt when learning when to use ふん or ぷん when trying to figure out how to pronounce the minutes:
    2,5,7,9 is fun everything else is pun.
    So if the last number you pronounce is 二、五、七 or 九 then you pronounce 分 as fun.

    First off: many thanks for these great lessons - you're doing all those who always wanted to learn Japanese, but don't live in big cities with communities of (native) Japanese speakers and are having a hard time pushing through all this material on their own, a great service. Also, being a (computer science) teacher myself, I can only imagine how much work it is, to prepare all those slides and lesson materials on a (bi-)weekly basis … much appreciated!
    With regards to the presented location words, I have a question though. The presented example sentences were
    18:00 クーラーはどこですか。
    18:06 バーベキューのとなりです。
    Seeing that the words クーラー and バーベキュー are not of the same object category … wouldn't it be more natural to use よこ (instead of となり) in this case?

    • @ToKiniAndy
      @ToKiniAndy  4 года назад

      It is a ton of work! Especially with releasing 3 videos bi-weekly on the Patreon. But I'm surviving! Thank you for watching!
      It's funny you mention that. I just got a comment from a native Japanese teacher asking if Genki got rid of that footnote about となり and よこ because she has never heard of such a distinction, and no Japanese native she's ever asked has heard of this distinction. She tells her students to ignore that footnote.
      I'm inclined to do the same.
      Hope that helps!

      @@ToKiniAndy Thank you for this clarification. Well, no textbook is perfect.
      As a teacher, I'm also quite used to having to explain to my students that some parts of the textbooks we're using aren't worked out very well. Nonetheless, while I personally prefer the Minna no Nihongo series, I think that Genki does a pretty good job on providing an introduction to basic Japanese.

I'm just trying to understand why the no particle was used like instead of maybe the de particle or maybe the ni particle. Although de is for action right? but ni would be the location.

      This comment made me nervous that RUclips went and put a million ads on this video again. haha
      I actually went and removed one.

      @@ToKiniAndy I think it would be fair to have an ad between each section within the lesson.
      For real though, for such a long video, you should definitely out more ads!

    Do you have a video on the N5 vocabs covered that are needed to memorize for those who don't own the book?

    I just came up with a story to remember iru/eru exceptions.
    I had LIMITED time to RETURN HOME so I RAN. It was raining, and I SLID as I ENTERED the house. I KNEW I had CUT myself. I KICKED the doorway and SPOKE, "I NEED a band-aid".

    54:10 I noticed this in the last lesson too, but これ and それ are also used in relation to who said what? So... somewhat in relation to a thing's presence to the speaker, but with something that was spoken?

    I don’t know if I lack confidence in myself but I really don’t find Genki to teach you enough. They might teach well, but 1 page of revision in the workbook really isn’t enough. Even though I’m planning to go to a language school in japan, I want to learn as much as I can in Canada. I’m not in a rush, but I force myself to learn as much as I can while understanding at the same time.
    (I hope your patreon helps, but for now I gotta stick with what I got and it’s frustrating)
    I am only on month 2, I have to be patient

    • @ToKiniAndy

      I think Patience is definitely the main thing to remember. You've only been at it for 2 months, so it will most definitely take time. You can only absorb so much information in that amount of time.
      Have you been doing the reading sections at the back of Genki? Those may help solidify your understanding more. =)

      @@ToKiniAndy I didn’t even know that existed. I’ll check it out in the morning
      Thanks
      BTW, I just watched spirited away. I always thought it was a horror movie cuz of the creepy black tall dude on the cover of the movie on Netflix. I am a literal person, when I’m told something, I take it very literally. I don’t know if that’s the reason I couldn’t understand the reference between Japanese and the way they see things. The only thing I understood was how the parents turned into pigs for eating the food. The movie was good but I didn’t get the reference. Maybe when I rewatch this in 6 years, I’ll understand the reference
      EDIT
      Alright well....you made a video on it. Thanks for explaining the river thing.
      I am considering buying a children’s book off of amazon to improve my reading because I don’t know if you still have it, but page 293 of Genki 1 at the bottom. It took me around 15 seconds to read that. I understood it all though
