Cessna Engine Failure and Ditching in Ocean, Filmed From Inside (HD)

- This video is a bit of a departure from our normal fare here on Real World Police, but I'm obviously letting this one slide. We will be back to our normal programming shortly, but this unparalleled footage is not to be missed.
On December 11, 2013, about 1522 Hawaiian standard time, a Cessna 208B, N687MA, was destroyed following a loss of engine power and ditching into the Pacific Ocean near Kalaupapa, Hawaii. One passenger was fatally injured, the airline transport pilot and two passengers were seriously injured, and five passengers received minor injuries.
The airplane was operated by Makani Kai Air. The flight departed from the Kalaupapa Airport on the island of Molokai, about 2 minutes prior to the accident, with an intended destination of the Honolulu International Airport on the island of Oahu.
In a written statement, the pilot reported that shortly after takeoff from runway 05, at an altitude of about 400 feet above ground level, he began a left turn for a downwind departure. Shortly after passing 500 feet AGL, the pilot motioned toward the power lever to reduce power for the climb when he heard a loud bang followed by an immediate loss of engine power. The pilot continued the turn toward land, verified the fuel valves were on, and observed all engine gauges displaying "zero." The pilot realized the airplane was not going to make it to land, and rolled the wings level while broadcasting a mayday distress call. Shortly after, the airplane landed within open ocean water in a flat or slightly nose up attitude.
All the passengers and the pilot exited the airplane through the rear right door, and the airplane remained on the water surface for approximately 25 minutes before it sank. One passenger swam to shore, and United States Coast Guard and Maui Fire and Rescue helicopters recovered the pilot and 7 passengers from the water about 80 minutes after the ditching.
A couple of minutes of standard-definition footage from this video were disseminated immediately following the event, however this - right here, right now - is the first time that the full-length, full-HD video is being made publicly available.
Enjoy.

Shame that it kinda turned into "every man for themselves" once they started trying to swim to shore. It's unfortunate no one made at least some kind of attempt to keep everyone together to be sure no one was struggling or falling behind. It's also not uncommon that small planes like that can stay partially afloat for several hours or more after crashing. So it's even more of a shame that no one (in particular the pilot) encouraged everyone to stay hanging onto the plane with 2 people on each wing and a person each hanging on to each smaller tail wing until they were either sure it was about to sink or help arrived. Judging by that photos taken from a rescue/recon plane that flew over and the recovered fusillade, it would seem the aircraft did in fact stay afloat. All this only serves to say that - everyone could've gone home that day and it's a painful tragedy that someone had to lose their life in that situation. Look out for each other people.
Exactly what I tought.
When poop hits the fan I can’t expect everyone to look out for each other. Most humans are like that

Hat off to all those that stayed calm
In my experience, when it gets real scary when u are in an airplane…nobody says a word……i had a horrible flight going from one island to another back in 93…..the pilots said it was the worst flight they had ever flown in twenty five years……
sobbing and freaking out is the probably the worst and most useless survival instinct, when you're actually in the thick of it, instincts generally kick in and you're laser focused on what you need to do and how to do it. There's rarely any time for sobbing and freaking out, so if you do then you're likely not surviving.

Flight number should always be included. Good to see passengers staying calm and not making things worse with unproductive screaming. @@apachedown9 The plane hit the water about 3:00 in and the last clear shot of the back of the plane is still well out of the water by 10:50 and at 18:15 a picture was taken of the plane, tail still out of the water, presumably even after the passengers were rescued
They should of stayed with the plane until it sank imo. Only a fit, elite swimmer should attempt to swim in the open ocean considering distances and rip currents!
lmfao my mans legit filmed the whole time, was like a rollercoaster ride at the theme park for him.
The narrator sounds like a mix of Michael Jai White and Morgan Freeman
fuck the crash, being in the water like that is terrifying.
It isn't if you have done it several times.
@@yogeshDocumentaryEntertainment who the fuck has done this several times
@@squidwardsjuul6269 I'm sure they meant swimming in the ocean
@@michaelfenton1887 maybe
I have...and it’s still terrifying. Let the seas get rough and an unexpected guest arrive to make things more enjoyable! 😂🍻👍🏻
Bro imagine crashing and you look out the window and there's a shark fin.
BRUH U JUST FREAKED ME OUT!
Pretty sure that all sharks in the vicinity would've swam miles away from a massive object crashing into the ocean.
@@Alex-ou4tn No, I'm just being realistic.

Look around to see who may be injured and send them out first?
Man this is sad and scary , I can’t imagine being in that situation and not panicking to death .. salute to the camera man
I'm interested in licensing this footage for a documentary on a major cable network. Who can I reach out to in regards to licensing?
Look how chill everyone is. Your crashing into the ocean. From the sky
Planned much?
@@SarahSmilez8100 Planned? It's would have been in perfect working order if the planned it. How do you think they were going to get away with the engineering records and maintenance records
@@SarahSmilez8100 why would it be planned? even if it would have.. they would have definitely not stayed quiet as it would create suspicion
RIGHT??! LOL! 🤣👌
Not everyone was chill. The woman who died, died from fear (leading to hyperventialtion & racing heart)
