You always say that you aint a metal guy,but this cover along with Powerslave you are most energetic, like your being is feeling it no matter what you say! Thank you for these covers!
Great cover and tribute. I was lucky enough to see Jimmy playing during the Holy Diver tour and The Last in Line tour back in the 80s, and as you said, he a had great tone, especially considering he used a pick. R.I.P. Mr Bain.
""We'll know for the first time if were Evil or Devine!" Such a incredible song by all measures. Ronnie James Dio was one in a million. The incredible voice. Phasing and emotion was part of the power and beautiful singing that was unique to him alone. The stories that his song's told were second to none. This is a perfect example of what he could conjure with the right people helping. Jimmy Bain was a born an bred Bassist.. He came out the first line up of what would be Thin Lizzy. Ronnie An Jimmy created some of the best music made. I was lucky enough to see Dio almost every tour. Jimmy was always smiling while hammering down some of the best Basslines with a tone that was all his. Great post Troy! You capture the power and tone of the song in spades! Well done !! Thanks Chris.
I was fortunate enough to know Jimmy Bain for a short while - one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet. People remember Rainbow and Dio, but forget that he wrote songs for both Phil Lynott (from Thin Lizzy) solo albums as they were best friends back in those days. Jimmy was a great writer. While recording Rainbow in the Dark, Ronnie kept saying the song was missing something. Jimmy leaned over on the keyboard and played what became one of the most recognizable keyboard riffs of the 80's and Ronnie said "That's it!" RIP Jimmy!
@@TJH3113 It's a shame he couldn't get that monkey off his back, he would have been with us longer. When i was first getting to know them (through WWIII) I was talking to Mandy one night and he asked me if i wanted to come down and watch him audition bass players for a show they had coming uo in San Diego and I said "What happened to jimmy?" He told me that it was just a backup as San Diego was a dangerous distance. I asked him what he meant and he said right here in LA, if he doesn't show - I just send a driver over to North Hollywood to grab him. If we're on tour, we're together on the bus, he can't go anywhere. But, from here to San Diego is dangerous because if he doesn't show, I have to have a backup! Thought it was funny at the time, but wish he had slowed down. He certainly was having fun but you had to remind him that he was,'t 30 anymore, and neother wqs he Lemmy, lol.. But, yes, no problem sharing - thanks for the channel - Love watching you play and you take care, also.
I watched your videos, maybe about 20 in like two days, and you're just the kind of bass players i like, always smooth, right in the tempo, i really love to hear your covers, you really are a source of inspiration, thank you (please forgive me for my english, i'm french, i know i'm not perfect but i'm still tryin' to improve it)
Love this base line, but looking back on the '80's, Vivian Campbell was the backbone of multiple Metal Hits. After leaving Dio, Vivian's work with Whitesnake catapult them into stardom... One must wonder how much of Whitesnake's success can be accredited to Vivian having played with Dio…. TJH3113 Thanks for another quality bass cover!!
I love this so much. Thank you for covering this song. I'm more of a guitar guy but some bassists you just can't keep from loving. Bain is one. You're pretty damn good, too.
Nice T-40! Great job on the song. I learned on a friends tobacco burst T-40 way back in 1984. This song is one that I learned that year. I acquired a Washburn bass with a Kahler trem on it a few years later and this song is the only place I ever found to use it! "The only way to go is down....."
I think I like the sound of the White T40 with the blade p/u's a little better, but this has its own sound as well. Haha, I wouldn't know what to do with a whammy bar...I'd probably get my finger stuck underneath it or something painful like that. Thanks.
🤘Awesome as always Troy.. Love just watching & listening to you play my Bass playn brother.. Even if i'm not tryn to learn the song.. lol.. Guess what i am tryn to say is, You are a total "Bass Playn Bad Ass" and I thank you for sharing your gift with the world.. Love that Bass too.. the infamous T-40.. Suckers are heavy but always great tone ... Respect💯
Thanks so much for the very kind words. I greatly appreciate you watching and taking the time to leave such a generously kind comment. The T-40's were weighty, but not as heavy as the Wal or the Aria Pro II's. They both had the Peaveys beat by a pound and a half.
Great tune & bass cover ! 🎸Always lover RJD. Great hard rock vocalist. I would argue that heaven & hell is the best sabbath album 😁. Easy ozzy lovers, love him too
Tone, execution and feel, so good. You seemed to really dig the tune...maybe you're a close metal head after all! Mind, you'd have to be heartless to not be moved by one of the best vocalists ever driving some pretty haunting lyrics.
So I came back to watch this for the second time, and realized I hadn't posted a comment the first time! That is a great sound you are getting there! You did really good in this cover, good job!
I was in a rut as far as writing my next D&D campaign for my friends. I wanted to a 'detective' style campaign. An illusionist is going around wooing women to fall in love with him and then for some reason curses them transforming them into something "bossy" (hag/witch-undead you get the picture): I was having a problem getting started then i remembered your covers of this and HOly Diver. I am now inspired and will continue writing. Keep it up.
Well done. I am a guitar player by trade. This is one of my favorite songs of bass lines. The bass runs in the song are just so recognizable and melodic. I knew the main bass lines in the song, but not all the runs and nuances. In fact this is the reason I came upon this cover. I wanted to see how it is played on bass the whole way through. I would say you nailed it!
You are fantastic. I do have some suggestions: I think Tiran Porter is one of the most underrated bass players of all time. He created great bass parts on nearly every single Doobie Brothers song. My favorites are "Clear As the Driven Snow" and "Neal's Fandango". To bring the bass parts, that are hidden so much of the time, to the forefront with these two songs will make people appreciate him, I think.
+jkyles1000 Thanks. I've been thinking of covering a Doobies song. They're one of my wife's favorites and I've seen the many time live...they always seem to be opening for somebody. They never disappoint.
Thanks, nice moment for a quick tribute...although I remember Jimmy playing with a pick most of the time?? Could be wrong?...but I don't see you playing in your vids with a pick at all??...may have missed it...any reason? I do have a memory of Dio/Jimmy playing "We Rock" on a tour (mid-80's with Vivian still in?) and just seeing his hair and his picking hand flailing away!!!..quite the image.... Statement says he was 68 yrs old...Lemmy was 70, Bowie and Frey were 69, and now Jimmy...the Grim Reaper is lowering the bar quickly!!!...I ain't getting any older, starting now!!!.....
Man Troy that Peavey sound monstrous, those slides good God!. Was this your small combo on your desk (from your one "how I record" video? If so was it DI'ed or miced?
I looked real long and close at the Peavy basses when I was in the market for a second bass. I ended up getting a Yamaha 5 string which I sold years later to get a little money. My Fender P bass with Rosewood frettboard got stolen out my condo during a burglary. I have the serial numbers and if I ever see it I'm going to call the cops and get it back. It has some unique features that I can recognize from afar. Anyway I have one bass now, a late sixties Univox made in Japan, it is small scale not the 34:" But it has a cute personality and the Sunburst that I always wanted. The Peavy in the background of your vid looks more like the ones I was looking at. What do you think of the new made in America G& L's?
TJH3113 ...thnxx troy...i have a 73 fender jazz bass...with a brand new neck...ive never used a pedal but the tone you get just kicks ass so im gonna look into one & try it...thnxx brother
I sold that thing when the prices were holding steady between 300 and 350 for several years. I believe l got 350 for mine because l got it from the original owner, and it still had the original receipt and advertising material from the local music store, that had been in business for 80 years. I got on line last night. These things are going for as much as $1500 now. Who would have ever thought?@TJH3113
R.I.P. Jimmy. Nice Tribute, Troy. The older we get, the more of our heros pass away...
Just found this one. Ronnie James was a king of metal for sure. And Jimmy Bain was no slouch.
Great cover.
One of my favorite dio songs!
R.I.P Jimmy... great bass player. Perfect Tribute!
Killer tone!
Now Jimmy and Ronnie...thank you so MUCH! 😍😍😍🤘🤘🤘💞💞💞
Sadly, yes. Thanks for watching... take care.
Every time I look for a good piece, you appear, master!
Thanks, Luis!

R.I.P. Jimmy ... always loved his bass lines of the early Rainbow times. Thanks Troy for the beautiful cover in remembrance of a great musician.
Such a tribute to Ronnie and to Vinnie and his ride cymbal incredible, thanks so much!
You bet! Thanks.
You seriously do the best covers!! RIP JIMMY !
The tone on that bass is stellar
Thanks Kevin! I think they are great basses.

Thanks TJ I keep finding them this takes me back to high school
Thanks!
@@TJH3113 merry Christmas I hope all is well
So fun! It is a great song with a simpler bass line, but it really punches through (especially with that Peavey). Thanks for doing this one!
Glad you liked it!
Man I sold my Peavey. Do I feel stupid! Another great cover! We Rock, but you ROCK!
They turn up at reasonable prices every now and then. THANKS!
R.I.P. Jimmy and congrats to you dude for the tribute

Yeah, this might be the quintessential metal song for all of the reasons you mentioned. Thanks Chris!

Thank you!!!!!
Jimmy is a legend, Legends never die. Nice cover dude.
True. Thanks.
Beautiful !!!!! you are the master!
Well done, Troy. Sounds great.
Love this! Always liked the Dio stuff. Ronnie really put a killer band together for that stuff. Love the T40 on this, too. Nicely done!
Thanks a lot. Yes, he did.
Perfect playing !!! I'm sure this is the way the song was played

Me too! I haven't really followed Vivian's career, with him being a guitarist and all, but he's certainly gotten around. Thanks a lot.
Very nice tribute. RIP Jimmy B.

Awesome tone and that bass is a classic! Props!
Speed metal 🖤 🤘
Slow speed metal, maybe.

Really liked Jimmys bass playing and his sound.great tune
Me too.
Oh wow I used to have the Peavy T60 guitar, loved that thing and played it for years, never saw the bass version 🤩
Very cool! I always thought that the bass was much more popular than the guitar was. In any case, they are great instruments.

Excelente, saludos desde argentina.
Thank you!
RIP Jimmy Bain.
Great playing, as always. Think you would ever consider doing a new cover of Song for America by Kansas?
You have a very interesting approach, using your fingers regardless of whether the original bassist used a pick or not.
Thank you William. As I often say, “If I could play with a pic, I would.” But, for some reason, I’m pretty spastic with a plectrum.
Jimmy Bain..
Nice swamp ash T-40 had one great base, heavy ass hell
Thanks. No bass is heavy if you never stand up with it.
Peavey T-40... heaviest instrument ever created. EVER.
I don’t know, I think my Arias I have these basses beat.

I just posted a video yesterday on this very topic. I think it's in my "Bass Tutorials" playlist.
