I have this kit sitting and I have been waiting for my son to get a little older to build it with him. He is going to be 9 in November and I showed it to him today and he is very excited. Would love to see a video on what you recommended to improve on... Better motor, better electronics, tires, shock oil... We love your channel1
Add the Vanquish top shaft to the transmission, brass knuckles, proper wheels/foams/tires, a Hobbywing 1080, a Holmes Hobbies Crawlmaster Sport 550, overdrive the front gears, and go have fun. The 11.4 wheelbase with overdrive is a completely different experience than your standard 12.3. I suggest 2 trucks 😂 an 11.4, and a 12.3
I'm building mine as we speak! I think I AGREE with every point - good and bad... I'm building mine with a 12T Pinion, an 50W front/40W rear Shock Oil as a starting point, based on everything I've heard. Also - based on REAL European TruckTrial Unimog competition videos... The rear Axle on ALL of them, is stretched rearward. I'm trying Deadbolt length Rear Links, to stretch the Chassis to 305mm Wheelbase (12.0").... 😉 (It WILL involve cutting the Rear Fenders for Tire clearance) You are correct in saying that the Body is a BITCH to cut and paint (Though more dignified than I just did) Frankly, watching yours Crawling in near stock condition, made me happy that I chose this!! The III still needs debugging. I've wanted the Unimog since it came out! Thanks to this RARE opportunity - Stimulus Check!! - I was able to BUY my first new Rig in over 6 years!! Please stay SAFE! 😷 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I'm still building mine and modding along the way... flipped the transmission so it looks correct with bell housing at front and brings the motor way forward.. Great review and performs great for a swb truck. Life would be boring if they were all 12.3 wheel bases... Cheers mate 👍
@@CarminesRCTipsandTricks Apparently you can buy a correct 3d print front mount but I just used original front (but rear) mounts to fit chassis and then drilled holes in them through 2nd slider rmounting hole after mounting the rear to locate in place.... You'll loose the back of battery tray but just use a shorty or small battert pack. Pretty simple mod for someone like yourself who's not scared to tinker. Axial did such a fantastic job of making a beautiful scale looking transmission and then fitted it backwards..wtf..!?! Cheers mate 👍
@@morercthanclassy1543 I haven't finished my build yet mate, it's unfortunately the kit that got pushed aside for other builds and I hadn't made up my mind how I wanted to paint and theme it, I just couldn't handle looking at the backwards transmission and when I mocked it up the motor and trans were a nice amount more forward, so I built with rear axle weights as I felt it mite be a bit nose heavy, but you will have a good idea about how it drives stock,.. it feels balanced on the bench and looks better. I just roughly measured axles etc and they seem to be in the right spot? Man it's been a while lol. I think it's right. Cheers 👍
Totally agree that the short wheelbase of the UMG10 made it a better trailer than crawler. Did see someone that had lengthened their UMG10 towards the rear; and, improved its climbing ability significantly.
Your perspective is very helpful. Since real unimogs are vastly different underneath they could have fudged the wheelbase and roll cage perhaps. Your point about it limiting our choices is a point well taken. I should probably buy a 12.3 and fudge my own body. The unimog is a bucket-list vehicle for me. Thank you!
Love my Unimog, the short wheelbase and high center make it a challange out on the trail compared to some of my other rigs. It was a great build, best axial kit I've done to date. I have a 40T holmes torque master with a 12t pinion and a 2 speed. Great video, uping shock oil weight is a must. This is a good second truck for someone new to crawling, as it can be a bit more difficult on the steep stuff.
The sliders from the SCX10II Cherokee kit fit the Mog decently. I’m running 4.3 inch Proline Swampers, and the sliders fit without having to trim them. They would need a small amount of trimming in the rear if you ran 4.75 tires. ✌🏼
Thanks for filming this review. Now I'm for sure going to stick with a Redcat 8 chassis , with a 400 series cab and build a nice crawler bed and cage. Might even consider the Axial cab as it's 70 bucks with all the accessories.
All is takes is a little work to get it to fit. Another great review Fran!!! If you ever get a chance to go for a ride off road in a unimog or a FC Jeep take it. Very different then a regular truck or jeep.
Really considering this for my first crawler. The link to the servo that you recommended is a dead end. Do you have another servo to recommend? Also, is there a radio that you’d suggest?
Cool review, it looks good in that blue also. I disagree with u on the tires, when I built this kit I thought the tires were not bad. They're very soft & I think they looked/functioned well, maybe some mods like siping &/or cutting certain treads or cutting the foams like a pinion gear on outside to soften them like a 2 stage foam would be good but overall these tires look good to me. I'm not impressed with the full size tire out back though, makes no sense to me. I've watched videos of the real full size Uni-Mog in action & they had the spare tire sticking out front on a 45 degree angle off the front bumper. I think that makes much more sense, I'm going to try modding something like that. Plus I'd like to see the UMG10 with some Capra or other portals. Plus I'm going to try & put mine to longer 12.3 & mod the rear fender hopefully to make it look natural. Lastly the roof, I don't like how high it is, I'm going to try & modify it to chop it down an inch & maybe lay it down more to look longer/lower & still scale. Thanks for the vids, keep em coming!
Just getting started in 1/10th scale trail trucks. Found your channel a couple of days ago and have been watching a lot of your videos. Great information, thank you! I would like to get the FS GT5A radio but is the link you have in your review still good? I would like to make sure you get credit for the purchase.
Been waiting for ups all day today for my UMG 6x6, when it shows up I’m hitting the buy it now. Might not be near as good as trx6 but it’ll do for now.
Love the video as always....would really love a longer video to help take up my “free” time tho. Lol. Cool little truck. Keep up the great work my friend. ✌️
IERC makes some really nice inexpensive sliders for the UMG along with a variety of other trucks. They are my go-to for quality parts at a great price.
5:07 in the video shows portal axles. I did not hear you say you put it on portals. Only mods were tires wheels and wheel weights. What gives? Looks like bad editing, since the drive videos had Grey diff covers and the portals you put on it have red covers With that being said, I love mine. Stretched to 12.3", moved servo forward and installed lay down battery mount. She's a beast

Oh my God. Can't believe someone mentioned DC Cab!
More to come! Thank you for coming!

One of the best Axial chassis they have made imo.

An SCX10 III with the Unimog body would be the ticket, a builder version without the electronics would be a sure buy for me.
I think your missing a screw between the top of the cab and the cage in the back, it does connect at the top

Hey now you can get a set of Axial SCX lll portalaxels because Horizon sell a standard axel kit for the SCX lll ha ha!
I would use 12"WB rear links and trim the rear fenders
You mean 12.3" links. That's what I did on mine. And have to install longer rear driveshaft
