TWIN TURBO Fiesta hits the DYNO - MAKING MORE BOOST!!!

  • A huge thanks to Clarke at ignitiona Advantages for having us down for a little dyno sesh. The day was a little too hot for me and the car, but as you will see its making good power down low on the small turbo. But i need to do some experimenting with the internal waste gate and feeding the large turbo. I also need to re engineer the charge cooling system as its not pulling the air temps down. Once I have this sorted we can up the springs in the external gate and wind it up again.

    I built a zetec turbo many years ago. I used a 200k engine out of the breakers , using stock rods & ARP bolts XE Turbo pistons. Stock head valves & cams & Piper springs. Head & block was acid dipped. The head skimmed and 3 angles on all the valves , block was decked. Stock MLS head gasket and bolts. Zetec 1.8 alley inlet manifold with 4 1.6 Puma injectors in the top and 4 injector bosses welded underside with another 4 injectors so 8 in total. RS Turbo exhaust manifold re tapped to the Zetec head and the turbo was a mixture of a Cosworth & Saab. Stock Cosworth 2WD intercooler. Sparks wise i used Pectel T2 and Harvey Gibbs mapped it on his engine dyno. It made 272hp & 315ft @ 2500rpm ! at 19 psi. Gearbox wise i used a Escort RS2000 gearbox with a RS Focus AP padal clutch in the end i used a Mondeo ST220 crown wheel & a APT LSD. This was in a red mk5 escort on steels wheels it was a right sleeper and by christ did it haul so that festa must be a right hoot well done a nice package !

    I've got a 1.8 na xr2 Zetec parked up.

    Love the build. I've been following this for ages.
    I remember reading somewhere about compound turbos (Gale Banks maybe) that you shouldnt vent your first turbos wastegate to atmosphere. It needs to go back into the exhaust stream that your second turbo is running on. If the second turbine sees a weakened exhaust flow because say 40% of it has gone to atmosphere, then it cant multiply the boost like it should. Might explain why it was so strong then nosed over - possibly second turbo just couldnt add in at the top end because it was trying to run on less gas flow than the first turbine?

    I really love the look of your car, such iconic look and it sounds fantastic as well. Could you rev higher, with the engine being built, to allow the bigger Turbo to work better. I'm thinking it's not getting enough flow to get the gains of the bigger Turbo. Also could you bypass the smaller Turbo so there isn't a restriction when the big Turbo kicks off.
    But in the end I also think this will be Traction limited and no matter how much power you throw at it!

    • @mikefpe
      @mikefpe  3 года назад

      i can rev it higher but as the powers dipping off at the top theres no point. i need to work out if the internal bypass is opening fully and if it is then i think i might have to rethink the waste gates on the set up. Your right though FWD cars with big power are pretty pointless unless your running drive shaft snapping front slicks. lol

    Wait a second! Is that external before both turbos? And you are running the small turbo on the internal wastegate too. Wouldn't that kill the small turbo when the external opens for the big one? I think that external placement is what makes the car not perform. Think about it you want the small turbo to be still spinning on full boost (regulated by the internal gate) when the big one reaches the point where the external opens.

    Have to be honest watched Ignition advances version (almost 10 mins shorter🤪) and was left disappointed overall. Yes it did 281 but with the set up on yours was thinking 350 min, but as you explain you have things that need doing. So keep plugging away at it certainly makes my Grandfather’s bought new in 1983 1.1L MK1 STX 31Y with the economy meter lights fitted , look sedentary in comparison 😁

But it’s all new to me I’m learning on the fly and I will play around with the set up to get the power curve better and the charge cooler more efficient. The guy who sold me the turbos said they should flow 420. Be great to see 350 with a liner torque line. More money to spend and parts to mate as I say it’s “sumfink a dooo!” Lol

    • @mikefpe
      @mikefpe  3 года назад +1

      Wouldn’t say they are ‘really low figures’. I would say this is a good starting point and has loads of room for improvement. The engine is built for big power. Does the car need big power? Not really. Do I want to get a set up that’s super responsive for the road. Yes. I could go slap a big GT 30 on it and make the numbers straight away. but in turn I don’t want a laggy car to drive around. I’d rather develop this and when I get the internal gate to working I’m sure it’ll crack 300 easily.

    Your wastegate plumbing is wrong for a compound

    • @mikefpe
      @mikefpe  Год назад +1

      Internal gate is simply to bypass small high pressure turbine, boost control should ALWAYS be done off the manifold on a petrol compound setup, it works far far better. The fact people don't do this is a big reason why so many get disappointing results (overall power) from their compound setups and don't realise why.
      One of the most successful people we've seen with petrol powered compound setups has an Eagle Talon (2ltr 4G63 engine) and runs 7s at over 180mph, and is plumbed up the same as mine.

    • @oliverscorsim
      @oliverscorsim Год назад

      @@mikefpe I hope it works for you but we've done a few and gating between stages let's you get both turbos in their sweet spot easy. I think fastest 4 cylinder cars are all compound now and they all run interstage gating aswell. Richard even did a well known LS Dyno vid where he made the same mistake and couldn't get the atmosphere turbo on line hardly. I'm not knocking your work the build is beautiful but that doesn't actually work. Just trying to save you some low numbers. My bike iv been playing with a compound set up since we run high boost numbers and it works great interstaging but the gate from the primary turbo has to be big enough so it can bypass enough drive energy to the atmospheric turbo. internal gates are rarely up to it. Best of luck with the build iv been watching for years and just caught it now.

    • @oliverscorsim
      @oliverscorsim Год назад

      Just had a thought when we went compound on my bike we monitored compressor speed at first and with both turbos doing what would be 15psi alone. we had 45psi manifold with 30psi back pressure. Our iat never climbed above 270°f, single turbo we had 380-400°f with 43psi back pressure and the same boost and the compounds don't eat bearings every season since their not doing 200krpm.

      If you’ve seen my other builds with the super chargers you will know that I love to over complicate things. This is by no means top power. More an initial power figure that’s uncovered some issues. Once I have sorted the charge cooling, and the internal waste gate flowing to the big turbo then il put bigger spring in the waste gate and we can turn it all up.
