#fighterpilot Podcast friend, Dave 'Bio' Baranek (www.topgunbio.com), returns with footage of #flight operations aboard USS Constellation in the Indian Ocean circa 1981-82.

That's some of the most casual and chill fighter pilot dialogue I've ever heard. :P
It's super neat seeing military footage from this era. It's probably my favourite era of military hardware, so major props to whoever uploaded it, and especially to those who's service made it happen.
Would've been great to have digital cameras back then. F-111, F-4, F-14, SR-71....
Another great Tomcat video Jell-O and team! Going inverted through the tip of a cloud certainly looks good in real life!!
Now this is my era! Almost was assigned to Connie but The Ike is where I wound up, being assigned to VF-142, CVW-7. Otherwise, I would've been here.
Man those were great times for me! At the same time, it makes me sad to think Connie's being taken apart. Such a rich history of the ship, and the name.
Just beautiful footage. So grateful for these. Loved the guns practice/ chasing the other tomcat through the clouds. Incredible. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome.
Tomcat cruises were a love/hate relationship for this young Ordie serving in VF-102 aboard USS America in the early 90's. I remember trying to fight a boat knob that was talking smack about squadrons while in-port in Rhodes while waiting for the liberty boat to arrive.
Served in the US Navy from 1980 - 84 assigned to VF-24 Renegades (81-84) Station at NAS Miramar as a Aviation Electrician Mate (AE). First West PAC deployment was on the USS Constellation from October 1981 to May 1982 TDY to the Galley’s Forward Mess Deck. Assigned to the Line Shack, as a Plane Captain, the Summer of ‘82 performing Daily, Post Flight & Pre Flight Inspections on the F-14A Tomcat. Finally made it to the AE Shop, after making AE3, the Fall of ‘82. Spent a lot of time repairing and maintaining the F-14A Electrical & Flight Control Systems. Deployed on the USS Ranger, July 1983 - February 1984 for my second and final West PAC. Promoted to AE2 Spring ‘84 and Honorably Discharged September 1984.
Man, now that's a carrier air wing if there ever was one..... variety IS the spice of life!
They say!
Those must be really old F-14A models. There doesn't even appear to be a TCS under the nose on them.
I noticed that too
If some of the interviews i've had with people from the fleet are correct, then the TCS wasn't always readily available, especially in the 80's.
Early 80s. So yes they are very old. These birds are likely less than 10 years old at this point. Almost certainly
This was my first cruise! Connie was the best. Later became an AIC/ASAC - - Those were the days. Love the Podcast. You should do a feature on AIC's sometime.
Check out episode 31.
Great video thank you for posting!!!
Awesome as usual
I was going to ask Dave 'Bio' a tech question, but since this video is from fighterpilots podcast, a general question to all in the know/who's listening/watching and has experience. Was wanting to know what dictated AB use on takeoff. Obviously weight, but how much did atmospherics have to do with it, I guess carrier speed + relative wind also..? First takeoff on this vid was no AB, but the rest were. AB takeoff more common with 'A' model TCs? Thank you, team. Si, Christchurch NZ.
Probably much like what you said. AC weight, wind over deck, density altitude etc. I've also seen footage of Alpha's taking a cat shot without burner, so I guess it wasn't that uncommon.
I was grinning ear-to-ear watching that pilot and RIO playing with a cloud. Thanks, Bio. Anybody know the names of that pilot and RIO?
Love it! thanks for sharing!
Awesome video, thank you so much for sharing
You're welcome.
4:08 I'm strangely and probably wrongly hearing, "You'd yeet 'im"
The F-14 is such a sexy aircraft!
We're bringing sexy back.
VF-24 renegades. I was transferred to that squadron back in 1994.
I miss getting Tomcats at our FBO. What a treat
Awesome video! On the bit with the gun cam at 3:52, what is that vertical line? Is that due to something like a fault with the HUD as I have never seen that on an F-14 HUD before.
I was asking myself the same thing. Would love to know what the vertical line represents.
At 4:01 there is a caption onscreen that explains: "There was a loose connection occasionally causing the display to collapse". That solid vertical line is the collapsed display.
@@hoghogwild I saw that, was wondering if that caption was for the fault which caused the issue, or if it's something different the HUD does. Pretty cool detail though, not something you see often in videos, or at all on the DCS F-14!
@@the88tench3Heatblur could probably program that into the DCS Tomcat for when it’s pulling g’s and buffeting. Always as an optional setting, though. Some of us won’t like it. 😄
@@Andrew-13579 they certainly could at some point. Given the F-4 is modelled to degrade over time on components, it wouldn't surprise me if they port that over to the F-14 and model those kind of glitches
Saw "Larry" and "Magic" in the same name and the first thought that came to mind was that it had something to do with an odd fanfic
Safety on the carrier deck sure has evolved from those days, eh?
I was on Ranger back then. VF-1.
💪
Odd to see an operational F-14 without tanks.
Faaake! When tomcat catapults it plays highway to the danger zone.
