This song, live in Montreal, is one of their best performances. Congratulations on 20K! And what about those backing vocals!!! Literally, any one of them could be a lead singer.
His voice gains a depth in the 80s...you'll hear the difference when/if you watch the same song live. Perfection in the studio broadens for an audience experience in the arena. Montreal is a gem & great on film; Milton Keynes is the wildcard, lesser film quality but passion & fuel from the audience makes up the difference.
He does not sing it lower live, his voice just gained more depth and weight. He hits all of the Bb4 notes, the long G#4 notes. In both of those versions he does a FEW G#5 notes. That is higher then the original studio version. Freddie sang higher in the 80's, his voice just had much more depth and power, which makes it sound lower to the untrained ear.
As everyone will tell you they are just as good live, their Montreal gig was recorded for video and the sound quality is amazing. You can see them all singing on this video and playing and work out whose voice is who.
So glad you listened to the studio version for the first exposure. This is what they were satisfied enough with to release to radio airplay and it should be the one to compare the live versions with. As others have noted, live in Montreal is a stunning live show and you wouldn't go wrong with a reaction to it as well. I really like what you're doing, keep it up.
Queen is at the top of EVERYONE'S list of great live material! All 4 members were amongst the finest instrumentalist in their fields..... And then there was Freddie!!!! Ultimate showman, he had the biggest audiences in the palm of his hands (of course the voice was stunning, but his antics won over EVERY ONE)! 81 Montreal.... Says it all ...
This is one of their many masterpieces that changed the course of musical history.. Bohemian rhapsody is the first one that shook the world but the show must go on is another example not only for the lyrics and Freddie's outstanding vocal but because that song was recorded just months before Freddie died and his voice was something else.. If you listen to the show must go on knowing that he was just about to leave has you can't not have shivers and chills all over
I personally love that you are listening to this without the video. Freddy Mercury was such a dynamic performer that you forget how good his voice really was. While he hits low notes in many songs, including this one, if you want to hear an entire song in his lower range, check out Time Waits For No One. If you really want an example of his voice, there is a version of We Are The Champions with everything else stripped out. I missed out on Queen when I was young ( except for the ones that were everywhere on the radio like We Are The Champions/We Will Rock You and Another One Bites the Dust). You have a lot to catch up on like I did.
Somebody to Love Montreal live HD is a given. Live Aid Wembley 85 Freddie performed against doctor's orders due to him suffering a throat infection but nothing was going to stop him performing and watched by 1.9 billion people and raised millions of pounds for starving children in Ethiopia.. brilliant reaction how wonderful it is that we can still appreciate Legends like Freddie Mercury what would music be like today without them. Xx
This was a crowd pleaser when I saw them both times, in 1980 & 1982. Whether you react to it or not check out this song from their "Rocks Montreal 1981" Live video. Also from that same show "Save Me" which, at the time, was a new song off the Game album. If you want another gem, that was Bohemian Rhapsody before Bohemian Rhapsody, listen to "March of the Black Queen/Funny How Love Is" off Queen II. To get the true effect of the song you must listen to both. That's how they appear on the record.
This wasn't just a rock group it was four very talented musicians who loved to create perfect music from many genres always with the unique Queen touch. Freddie could sing any style with ease.
Both Freddie Mercury (lead vocals and piano) and Roger Taylor (drums and vocals) had, at this point in their career, a vocal range of close to 4 octaves. Any high falsetto you hear is Roger Taylor, but he had lost his very high falsetto by the early to mid ‘80s.
This might have been the song Freddie was proudest of. Glad to see you enjoy it too. It actually never gets old, I’ve been a fan for a really long time. Freddie sings lower in a song called Mother Love. He has a huge range and impeccable timing. And as you can hear from this song, a great songwriter.
If you want to hear how Freddie is singing in his lower range check out Queen - I'm Going Slightly Mad and Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe - Ensueno
Freddie Mercury was a natural baritone though he usually sang in the tenor range. He never had any vocal training so he never realized that he was a baritone (he had a 4-octave range) even though his speaking voice was baritone. Then in 1987, he worked with the internationally famous Spanish Opera soprano, Monserrat Caballe on the album "Barcelona". She scolded Freddie and told him to sing baritone since it was his natural range. He told her that he was sorry but he couldn't do that since he felt his fans would not be able to recognize him if he did. Freddie had an intriguing physical phenomenon called subharmonics that he used to drive his vocals to the limit. Subharmonic is a form of singing where the vocal folds vibrate along with a pair of tissue structures called ventricular folds. This form of singing is only used by Tuvan throat singers of Mongolia, except in a more extreme way. Freddie’s vocal cords vibrated at 7.04 Hz - higher than a typical vibrato range of 5.4 Hz to 6.0 Hz. To put it more scientifically, the famous opera singer Luciano Pavarotti produced a perfect sine wave for vibrato when he sang - a value of 1. Freddie, on the other hand, averaged a value of 0.57 - which means he was vibrating something in his throat even Pavarotti couldn’t move. Yes, definitely give a listen to live version at Montreal in 1981. Queen was known for rearranging their song for live concerts. Often they would play them faster and increase the instrumental. In the case of this song, it had to be rearranged since the studio version relied so much on the backup chorus of Brian, Roger, and Freddie (with multi-layering and overdubbing) but that cannot be recreated live (Freddie couldn't sing both lead and chorus simutaneously --- he was good but not that good). Personally, I think the live version is even better than the studio version - ruclips.net/video/aA2IRoPFIn0/видео.html
Montserrat was one of the best sopranos of all time. Her voice was impeccable. But she was not a vocal coach or a voice teacher, all of the experience was in opera, she did not have experience with untrained rock singers. Freddie was tenor, he barely sang any low notes, especially live. He wrote all of his own songs in the tenor range, you naturally write songs in your own comfortable range. All untrained male singers in opera starts out as baritones.
I subscribed for your Queen reactions. Keep going!!! Freddie had a 4-5 octave range. Scientists studied his voice. They concluded he used parts of his throat that allowed him to sing unlike any other singer. He could do extended vibrato and had incredible range.
Thanks, SalvoG - Yep - they took us to church on this one... definitely watch the "official video" - and THEN the live at Montreal version... stunning - Freddie is awesome - but the entire band is incredible.. you will see that especially in the live version - look forward to more from you...
I knew fan’s would be filling you in on the Live performance in Montreal saying it’s just as good as the recording but it’s not just as good it’s at least 10 times better 😁 look forward to seeing your reaction to the live performance 🤗
QUEEN THE GREATEST!! My favorite song in the world! They’re considered one of the best live rock bands ever! Live in Montreal is highly recommended. 👍 I love the version in Milton Keynes 1982 🔥
If you really want to hear the power in his vocals, listen to Who wants to live Forever” from the 1986 Wembley Concert or the 1986 Budapest Concert! It will blow you away!
Three amazing voices to produce a sound like that brilliant ❤️ Roger has said he is still surprised at how much noise they could make with just the four of them one amazing band ❤️
I think you would also find it interesting to research the collaboration that Freddie had with Montserrat Caballe, a world famous opera singer, and the song Barcelona. For someone of that calibre to say what she did about Freddie, is a mark of his talent. They became good friends as a result of their meeting. There are a few interviews of her, talking about Freddie, that are especially poignant.
My mom once played a Queen song to me sometime in the second half of the 90's and I fell in love. I don't regret being born in 1990 but my only regret is that I could not go to his concert while he was still alive. I was only one year old when he died in 1991.. I wish I could go to his concert. But rather, in a country where I lives, going to a concert far away in another country would be impossible because of the earnings. I love this band. My beloved band. React to his songs. Most of their work is amazing and you won't be disappointed. They played so many genres that everyone will find something for themselves.
Queen will surprise you but each song gives you goosebumps at the harmony and beauty. Try Stone Cold Crazy, In the Lap of the Gods, Spread Your Wings, It’s A Miracle, and their duo with David Bowie that the Queen bass player John Deacon wrote an incredible bass riff for called Under Pressure. Freddie was a natural baritone and could sing 4 octaves and did. Listen to live performances and you’ll hear him sing it deeper at times. Queen changed up songs live to keep them interesting to all!!❤❤❤❤
Oh, yeah. So much going on in this. I can't imagine this even making to the charts today, much less to the top. Which says more about today's music than Queen's. Enjoy the journey.
I love rock n roll and there are so many iconic bands and musicians. However, they are a few bands that are on a higher level due to the lead singers, each member of these groups are musical genius on their own and the sheer volume of music that is still fresh and contemporary to today. There is one other factor and that these lead singers are such incredible front men are so charismatic when watching a live performance, you can not take you eyes off them. IMHO you just discovered the second angle of the trinity of rock bands. The reason is because their are three great bands, and I know I am gonna trigger some people but it is Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant), Queen (Freddie Mercury) and INXS (Michael Hutchence), these groups also formed when members were 20ish and younger. These groups overlapped in that order, dominated the culture, dominated the stadiums, the times, MTV, movie soundtracks, wrote hundreds of songs many more than released. The other thing is that these three groups also paved the way and each developed a new genre of music, unfortunately the deaths of a member is what cause the end for all of them. Led Zeppelin did everything the thunder of the Gods sound, Queen had the blending of Freddie’s opera blending with rock and INXS was consider new age/ alternative because they couldn’t pigeon hole them, but they did a funky/R&B groove. Many people don’t know that INXS use to open for Queen at one time, until they started filling the same stadiums. Freddie and Micheal were friends and there a few stories about them singing together back stage, sorry no iPhones back then.
I’m sure you were told in every single comment to watch the live version from Montreal. If you think this is good, that version really WILL melt your face off! Hands-down the greatest live performance ever.
You could spend months and months just listening to Queens back catalogue and still discover new things every day. Oh btw, long story very short, before Freddie passed, he recorded as much as he could, and also made sure that the band owned and had the rights to use any and all material that existed. If you read the notes to the album 'Made In Heaven' you'll learn that the album, released 4 years after Freddie's passing, was expertly mixed from that recorded material. Freddie was truly one of a kind, and the irony is that Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, are each exceptional in their own right, but Freddie is on another level. Their performance on Live Aid, now immortalised in film, is a live set from which all others should be judged, and it was no accident. Even with such short notice, Queen worked and rehearsed, and planned every song and the order they would be, making sure they had the right ingredients and boy did they get it right. All the best in your journey of discovery.
I loved the way you loved this song! Now my friend, listen to the live version in Montreal! Queen are like potato chips, you can't listen to just one! More Queen please! 🙂
Greatest live rock band performance was Live Aid 1985. Twenty minutes of pure magic heard by 1.4 billion on the day. Freddie sang four octaves and Roger Taylor the drummer was higher with a falcetto. All their voices matched very well in tone.
My favorite part of this song is the outro, where all four band mates are singing together and Roger Taylor is killing those fills on the drums. It's so cool! FIND ME! SOMEBODY,,,TOOOOOOOO LOVE
You might enjoy the video of the remaining members of Queen with George Michael at the Freddie Mercury tribute for AIDS awareness just six months after he passed. At the time George Michael's lover had recently been diagnosed with AIDS from which he eventually died. George wasn't out at the time, so nobody knew how much pain he was in, or how personal this was for him, but later he said he sang this like a prayer for Anselmo. He also sang "These are the Days of Our Lives" at that concert in a duet with Lisa Stansfield. He gave incredible and very well received performances that night.
I like how you are lost for words. Me too. Can't describe my emotions but their songs resonate with me for days on end. I've heard this song so many times yet it's as if it was my first time.
The highest voice is their drummer. Freddie switched from low harmonies to midrange. The guitar and bass players are mostly mid range. The vocal arrangements are incredibly tight.
All I can say is Freddie was magic especially live! He could sing anything and the rest of the band are fantastic as well! Do continue on the Queen journey as it is definitely worth while. I do suggest listening to some of their live performances. Believe it or not some of their songs are better live! The song White Queen is an example.
I love your reactions, wish you would do more queen. You could listen to a song every month and never run out of songs. They Did their songs different as every concert so you could listen to the studio version and then go to several concerts and the song would be different each time.
I saw Queen LIVE in Montreal, 1981 - please react to Somebody to Love at this concert - and practically any other song from this concert. You won't be disappointed! Welcome aboard Salvo...I'm glad to follow you on this journey.
I really appreciate your desire to listen to Queen’s music without the distraction of a video or a live performance. Because their music has the strength to stand alone. But, as others have noted, a lot of Queen’s magic is discovered in their live performances. All well-known bands are great, whether they play our favorite music or not. But not many bands are as good or even better when performing live than they are in the studio. But Queen is. Freddie Mercury has that “it” quality that many performers would sell their souls to the devil for. He engages an audience from the moment he sets foot on stage, regardless of what he sings. Once you see him perform live, there is simply no doubting that the ‘music gods’ have touched that man and he was born to perform. Period. You’re definitely cheating yourself out of a meaningful musical experience by not watching Queen live performances. A must-see!
Freddie is a God music his voice is a fenoman out if thus world perfection on two legs and if course the other members great musician the best band in all times make more reaction thanks
I applaud you for listening👍👍, that's what we did when the songs came out!!! 👌👌 It was ALL about the music without distraction or lyric sheets (some had them). We had to figure out what they were saying/singing and many of us had some words here and there wrong😂😂🤣🤣, which also leads to misinterpretation, if the song had any meaning to begin with🤔🤔😂😂🤣🤣!!! 👌👌👍👍✌✌😁😁
Freddie actually had a four-octave vocal range. RECOMMENDATION TO HEAR FREDDIE SING IN HIS LOWER REGISTER, IN OPERATIC BARITONE: “ENSUENO” …FROM FREDDIE’S 1987 OPERATIC ALBUM, BARCELONA “Ensueno” is a duet: Freddie w Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballe. (When you listen to Freddie LIVE - esp in the 1980s - you’ll find that: In studio recordings, he sang the higher registers. When touring/singing in ALL those multiple shows, he adjusted songs so that he would be singing in a (most of the time) much-less-high register, to save his throat (he had probs w recurring lymph nodes on his vocal chords). He focused instead on using a powerful chest voice that he’s famous for in the live shows. Drummer Roger Taylor, who also has an incredible vocal range, is quite strong on the high end, and would always harmonize w Fred and take the high lines in the live shows.) OTHER STUDIO RECORDING SUGGESTIONS: “EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE” (A DEMO/predecessor to the “ENSUENO” duet… WHERE FRED SINGS THE SOPRANO PART.) “YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWAY” (FOR THE UNBELIEVABLE STUDIO LAYERING, inc. BACKWARDS… MUCH. MORE. COMPLEX. than what you just heard here!) “COOL CAT” (ALL FALSETTO.) “I’M GOING SLIGHTLY MAD” (A rare BARITONE piece.) “DON’T TRY SO HARD” (A ballad with PIERCING HIGH notes in the chorus.)
I love, love, love that you did not watch a video and listened to the music only recognizing that you can always watch a video of this song in the future. Being true for all songs, I am so glad that you consider doing it that way. Many videos had nothing to do with the song and can only distract from the music. I wholeheartedly agree if you chose to do all of your reactions that way.
this is THE one I would have preferred seeing the Official Video for. It's lovely. Now, everyone will insist you watch the Live In Montreal 1981 version and you'll not have anything to compare it with.
Freddie’s range was baritone, bass, bass , tenor and a soprano falsetto. Roger the drummer actually had the same octive range but with a higher falsetto but without the incredible control Freddie had over his false vocal chords with Brian most often at the lower end of the tenor scale
This is an outstanding version of this song but as commented below, Live at Montreal, this song is legendary. You really should react to Queen live on almost all of their songs because they are beyond belief as a live band and no Autotune either.
Freddie had something like a 4 octave vocal range and he does get down to the baritone range at times. The really high voice in the backing vocals is usually drummer Roger Taylor (he's the guy who sings the really high 'Galileo" on Bohemian Rhapsody). Guitarist Brian May was no slouch in the vocal department too. This song melts my face too.
Somebody To Love live in 1981 at Montreal is a Must!! Freddie’s vocals are even more spectacular in the live performance than this studio version PLEASE react to that.
Lower and raspy, listen to GIMME THE PRIZE official video written by Guitarist Brian May for the Highlander movie. One of 6 songs they wrote for Highlander
This song, live in Montreal, is one of their best performances. Congratulations on 20K! And what about those backing vocals!!! Literally, any one of them could be a lead singer.
Bit premature mate - I see 19.9k
I agree, it’s worth watching the Live at Montreal 81!
3 were.
Live at Milton Keynes bowl is my personal favorite
YES YES YES!!!
Freddie was a real showman. Their Live Aid set is well worth a watch, it's the stuff of legends
the live version from montreal in 1981 is KILLER.
Now watch the live performance from '81 in Montreal. Considered one of the best live performances ever.
Love your reactions❤❤❤❤
Yep Freddie sings it lower in the live versions - Montreal and Milton Keynes live recordings on RUclips are both insane!
@@LMTino totally agree on that breakdown of the versions!
As everyone will tell you they are just as good live, their Montreal gig was recorded for video and the sound quality is amazing. You can see them all singing on this video and playing and work out whose voice is who.
Better Live ✌🏼
I don’t want to seem pedantic, but I think you’ll find it was filmed. 🤣
On the harmonies, you can hear Freddie's lower register. Later in 1987-88 with Montserrat, he also records much lower with her encouragement. 🎵
GOTTA react to the LIVE version as well! PLEASE!!!

Time waits for no one is not a low song! A low is a I am Going Slightly Mad. Overall We Are Champions s a high song.
The band's harmony was magical. One of my favorite songs.
Great reaction. Queen's first big hit was Killer Queen. I think you might enjoy it. i was sold the minute I heard it. Thanks.
Oh Salvo, my friend…..you HAVE to watch the live performance in Montreal. Superlative! No blocking issues.
Freddie considered this song better than Bohemian Rhapsody from the writing aspect, this was his favourite.
This was a crowd pleaser when I saw them both times, in 1980 & 1982.
Whether you react to it or not check out this song from their "Rocks Montreal 1981" Live video. Also from that same show "Save Me" which, at the time, was a new song off the Game album.

No high falsetto is not always Roger, in fact on Somebody To Love it is all Freddie.
Freddie had a four-octave range. Absolutely extraordinary
You should never miss Freddie Mercury's videos..best in the world..no kidding: ) love
Freddie could sing in any genre & own it as if it was his natural style.
Gotta check it out live…has a different vibe & a lot of fun.
Great reaction.
Montreal Live of course … but check out Milton Keynes ✌🏼🔥
This might have been the song Freddie was proudest of. Glad to see you enjoy it too. It actually never gets old, I’ve been a fan for a really long time. Freddie sings lower in a song called Mother Love. He has a huge range and impeccable timing. And as you can hear from this song, a great songwriter.
This is Queen's "gospel" song. It's like something a church choir would do. Plus some blues and rock thrown in for good measure.
There’s so many more. Queen us a very deep rabbit hole, but so worth it.
If you want to hear how Freddie is singing in his lower range check out Queen - I'm Going Slightly Mad and Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe - Ensueno
Yes, although Ensueno is actually in the tenor range as well, Ensueno is between C3-A4.

Roger Taylor, the band’s drummer sings in the higher register
I agree. The live version in Montreal is astounding.
I believe this is Queen's most triumphant song ever.
Definitely need to check out the live in Montreal video from 1981.
“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” he sings in his lower register. The melody and beat is a homage to the 50’s-60’s songs.
Very good tune
That’s why they are the best!!!! Freddie, is the best IMO there ever will be ❤

I listen to the (mostly) crap I hear from new "artists" and I'm so thankful I grew up with great music like this.
You want to be starstruck..watch the whole "Live Aid" concert...it's about 25 minutes
Pure musical and vocal perfection 😎
My very favorite Queen song! ❤️❤️🔥🔥
Freddie was a natural baritone, and sang with that tone in his later work, especially when he did his opera recordings with Monserrat Caballe.
You really need to see this LIVE it's phenomenal
Queen is one of those rare bands who sound even better live!!
DUDE!!! This was your first time hearing this?!?!? It's wonderful, isn't it?
Absolutely amazing
Freddie's voice had quite a range. But you don't mess with this song in any way. I envy you for being at the beginning.
PTX covered this live for a Freddie Mercury special. Such a great song.
For me i think this is their best.
Masterpeace from Queen beautiful song
It was ALL about the music without distraction or lyric sheets (some had them). We had to figure out what they were saying/singing and many of us had some words here and there wrong😂😂🤣🤣, which also leads to misinterpretation, if the song had any meaning to begin with🤔🤔😂😂🤣🤣!!! 👌👌👍👍✌✌😁😁
Queen rule. ✌️
As do the Beach Boys. “Don’t Worry Baby” is a must-hear. 🙏🏻
Freddie actually had a four-octave vocal range.
RECOMMENDATION TO HEAR FREDDIE SING IN HIS LOWER REGISTER, IN OPERATIC BARITONE:
“ENSUENO”
…FROM FREDDIE’S 1987 OPERATIC ALBUM, BARCELONA
“Ensueno” is a duet: Freddie w Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballe.
Drummer Roger Taylor, who also has an incredible vocal range, is quite strong on the high end, and would always harmonize w Fred and take the high lines in the live shows.)
OTHER STUDIO RECORDING SUGGESTIONS:
“EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE”
(A DEMO/predecessor to the “ENSUENO” duet… WHERE FRED SINGS THE SOPRANO PART.)
“YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWAY”
(FOR THE UNBELIEVABLE STUDIO LAYERING, inc. BACKWARDS… MUCH. MORE. COMPLEX. than what you just heard here!)
“COOL CAT”
(ALL FALSETTO.)
“I’M GOING SLIGHTLY MAD”
(A rare BARITONE piece.)
“DON’T TRY SO HARD”
(A ballad with PIERCING HIGH notes in the chorus.)
Ensueno fits perfectly in the tenor range. The tenor range is from C3 - C5. Ensueno is from C3 - A4.
We all are waiting for you to react to their epic hit "BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY" as it is a must for us! 😃
live version amzing in montreal
You must see the live version in Montreal 1981! Best live performance I've seen!
I grew up with this song, watch the video it's awesome! Glad you liked it!
Best band ever. ❤❤❤❤❤
Fred was a natural baritone, so he's very versatile.
If you listen to the song Innuendo you will hear Steve Howe from the group Yes playing a little Spanish guitar
You need to listen to Queen's masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody immediately.
This is Freddie's favorite song that he ever wrote. And you should really do yourself a favor and listen to the live at Montreal version
Somebody To Love live in 1981 at Montreal is a Must!! Freddie’s vocals are even more spectacular in the live performance than this studio version PLEASE react to that.
This is a fine example of how genius & insanity can be two sides of the same coin.
Lower and raspy, listen to GIMME THE PRIZE official video written by Guitarist Brian May for the Highlander movie. One of 6 songs they wrote for Highlander
Love Roger's (drummer)high tenor voice
