I *only* want plants in my collection that I love and keep me interested. It took a moment to realize that just because I don't find a plant interesting doesn't mean that it won't light up someone else. To date, I have not regretted a single sale or giveaway, and my collection has been distilled down to plants that I love seeing in every room. I'm sure this video will give some people the confidence to make that move, too!
You’re so right that nobody expects you to like all your plants, except you. We don’t even like all our family members🤣. It’s best to give, sell or trade the ones you don’t want; better than putting them on the curb. Thanks for sharing Emma!
I think it’s great that you’re passing plants along, if we all enjoyed and succeed the same ones it would all get rather dull. Very rewarding to clear some struggles out the way and know it will bring lots of joy to someone else. Hope moving them along goes smoothly.
Hi Emma, good for you!! We all need a good purge in our lives, be it people (bringing negativity & drama) plants, things in hobbies or clutter, whatever it maybe. I think it makes you feel better and lighter, so good for your mental health. Please try not to feel guilty, you're being responsible in giving away/selling to others. I had a total of 90 plants and purged down to a current 76, because sometimes we are just not feelin it and that's okay!!
Guilt helps no one. It’s a very destructive feeling to your personal psyche. We all have things to move past. So pass on those plants and make someone feel happy which in turn will make you happy too.
Oh Emma, I feel you. I am currently on a 2-month vacation and I've been thinking when I get back, I need to get rid of some of my plants. Especially those I've been holding on to just because they've been with me for years. But 650+ plants isn't reasonable anymore. So the duplicates, the ones I thought I needed but don't really enjoy anymore, etc... My plant sitter sends me weekly updates and there's definitely a few where I am like "Okay, it's fine if that one perishes." - Which kinda shocks me. Guess it's an evolution of plantparenthood. :D
I just gave away a huge zigzagcactus last week. It wasn 't the plant for me anymore, way to big and not happy in my care, so I took some cuttings and gave it away. It made my head lighter and the person who got it was sooo happy with it 😊
Glad abt this. A few months ago I started to think you and Claire had too many plants to truly "see" and care for, given your homes. I have a 1 bedroom and my 60-70 pants can get overwhelming. Mb try to limit plants but buy more plant accents (ex. Paintable trellises or ironic pot shapes/stickers) that are low maintenance to bring joy.
I’ve been purging myself. Feels GREAT. I have my amydrium silver climbing a cork board and what I found is they like very high light and humidity. Mine is growing outside and is putting out new leaves every single week, one behind the other. It’s huge and stunning with very small spacing between leaves. What grows well for some people does not for others, I get it.
I'm with you on the Aglaonema. I can appreciate them but they just don't speak to me. I'm trying to keep my collection to under 30 plants. Small by most standards but although I have plant envy and would love more; I know at this point in my life, the upkeep would be too much for me. Thanks for your honesty.
I am proud of your honesty and I value all the teachings I get from each one of the experiences you share. I admire your abilities and capacities to make things work with your initiatives and possibilities. Its really an honor to be part of your community.
Calatheas are a magnet to pests in my experience. Last year I bought a Calathea White Star the same size of your Ornata. I noticed a few weeks later the underside of the leaves were full of spider mites. My god. I wiped them so many times with some paper towels and insecticide but they just wouldnt stop coming back. The paper towels would come off green every time I wiped the leaves. I just gave up and cut it down to the base. I left it alone for a few months and repotted it recently. Threw the medium away and hosed the roots and the base of the plant to get rid of any spider mite that could have been there. Maybe 2-3 months passed by and it sprouted 3 new growth points. I am so happy seeing all the baby leaves. All of this to say, dont give up yet on your Calathea if it means that much to you!!! If they refuse to go away, try to cut the plant to the base and spray the roots and the stems with a strong jet to remove any lingering mites. It will come back and grow strong!!
I can vouch for that! I cut my Calathea medallion down to basically the soil level cause the foliage was so ugly after spider mites. It grew back beautifully!!
Hi Emma, Glad to see someone else is struggling with the Begonia Maculata. Mine is very sad looking too. I don't know how my mother kept one for years, using her own potting mix of backyard clay soil mixed with sand and chook poo. She also put it outside every summer for a vacation. It always looked amazing and flowered every year. Like go figure!!! 🤔
In regards to your calathea. I would highly recommend cutting it a few inches above the ground. It will send out new shoots. I had the exact same problem and thought it was humidity but for some reason doing this trick has it looking fantastic again
This is so relatable....some plants you really want but if they hate you then you can soon go off them....that begonia you showed certainly hated me and was a constant reproach until I slung it. The string of spades however I`d be happy to buy of it still needs a home.
Oh my I only have 50+ plants now and I'm overwhelmed already! I hope you're gonna feel better after those plants leave your house. If I live nearby I would definitely take, trade or buy that scindapsus and syngonium 😌😌
Hi.really appreciate you giving these plants a second chance I just wish I was in UK and I could snatch some of these plants cz in my country we don't have them
I know it's not the same thing, but the chocolate aglaonema looks alot like your calathea and it's so much easier to take care of if you are interested in a substitution 🥰
Emma chop the ornata back to the base, water her leave for a few days till the cuts dry out, then pop in a clear bag with a benifical mites sachets just to be sure and tie her up . The spider mites will be toast to humid no foliage. Then you get to watch her grow back and I swear I've 7 prayer plants the all initially either had pests or went crusty. Now they are all lush and healthy as the new growth grew in used to my environment. Also let's you have a smaller more manageable plant for a few months. Hugs from Scotland 🏴 love and snuggles to 👑 Queen Cleo too.
God this video is so helpful, I always feel bad getting rid of plants even if they’re practically dead, I really need to get over that block and allow myself to get rid of plants I don’t want/are just causing me stress. It would be better for me and plant!
@@GoodGrowing Absolutely! I'm planning to offer any plants that are good to the few planty people I know, feels better that way, if they don't want to take them I'll do my best to get them rehomed otherwise I'll just have to get rid of them. Unfortunate but gotta let go of that stress!
I have a few fireflash spider plants I grew from seeds, Mexican fire cracker succulent, fairy castle cactus, a mini TC joepii, philodendron moonlight, white princess on the struggle bus, mini adensonii, string of turtles, white knight props, plum crazy oxalis props, golden pothos props, a struggle bus birkin, a struggling hoya curtisii. These are all 4 in pots or smaller. In South Eastern Massachusetts. 💚
You would only have to feel guilty if you were buying plants on a whim and then throwing them away! If you've tried and it didn't work and you're giving them to someone else, I think you're absolutely doing the right thing. Plants don't always turn out how we expect them to!
I put the plants I don't want on my back patio in spring so I wouldn't have to think about what to do with them until next fall. Of course, they are all doing great out there. I was hoping they would die so I wouldn't feel guilty about getting rid of them.
It's ok to find out you don't like certain plants and fairplay for realising and purging, that's the mature and healthy way to deal with it 👏 I'm not keen on begonias, philodendrons, ficus or carnivorous plants and calatheas hate me 😂
I like letting go plants that I don't love anymore but it's very difficult to give away plants that I still like. I have to let go some of my oldest plants that are absolutely gorgeous and big and thriving just because I don't have enough space😭 I decided to keep more expensive and rare ones and let go the cheaper, bigger ones just because I think I easily can buy the cheaper ones later if I move to a bigger house. but it's still very difficult
I have the green form of the Amydrium Zippelianum and it does wonderful in my bathroom. It has several growth points and has sever al long vines full of leaves. I have it wrapped around a wire wreath form and planted in a 10in self watering pot. I have not watered it for weeks some times and my bathroom gets hot in the summer.
