I realized lately that I'm watching other people live their life on RUclips and not living my own. I'm a senior so I don't have unlimited life time left! Decided to unsubscribe from many channels, cut off social media, and notified the people who matter that they can call or text me (prefer calling). Now to develop hobbies and live slow and really live.
Love this, Diana. Over a year ago, I said to my 16 year old daughter, "We think you're old enough for social media now," and she said, "Nah - but thanks." It only then struck me: my daughter had been bold enough to chose a different path and I could too. I've honestly not looked back. I keep RUclips as we don't have a TV, but other than that - I pretty much 'have my pre-internet brain back', as the saying goes ;) I may be imagining it, but I think I'm way calmer, much more at peace and able to notice and enjoy the really small things again without constantly craving that kick of excitement and approval.
My husband and I just talked about this. We plan to play card’s together in the evenings. Not going to make it a have to, not making it law but be intentional about choosing that over scrolling. Maybe not every night but some.
As a high school teacher, I have 150 students in my classroom daily. I can see why my "social interaction quotient" is exhausted by the end of the day. But I do need a few adult friends on top of this.
Ah, reading fiction before bed is great. 😊 I turn my phone off at 9pm and don’t look at it again until the next day…it’s wonderful. 🙌🏼 I also don’t watch the news anymore. Lots of prayer requests just from human contact.❤
As autumn approaches Il've been called to slow down. Ken and I now make it a point to sit down at the table and eat dinner together. We treat dinner like an event and a chance to talk. On a personal note I've returned to reading my Bible and my fiction book every night. Unplugging is just the best medicine. ❤
One of my favorite ways to live unhurried is to cuddle up on the couch and have interactive read a louds with my 3 girls, 8 and under. There this peace that sweeps over us, and this lingering quality which refreshes my soul. A few months ago, I was reading the Children’s Pilgrim Progress to them, cozied up on the couch and all of them, including my 3-year-old girl sat there for over an hour listening to me “reading a little more” of this amazing story!!! I was blown away. Sometimes children have or are made for more capacity of the “old fashioned” ways than we realize-how it is meant to be even today. Stay encouraged, ladies! With Jesus, we got this!
I love the Small and Slow idea. You will love the book "In praise of SLOW" by Carl Honore. And I can now feel better that finding two good friends will be enough.
I hope you & your children are feeling better. x I’ve always struggled to make friends & now at 65 it’s even harder, as most people don’t include single childless people in their cliques. Most people only want to mix with other families or couples, not singles. Now there are even grandparent cliques & probably what’sapp groups for them. I would be lost with Facebook & Instagram & is often the only way I can keep in touch with others.
Oh my gosh this is so timely for me.... I'm stuck in a show and bad habit of staying up wayyyy to late and binging on the show before sleeping. I realised I need to get straight and fight against it and read bible and fiction books again.
This mades me think of how different life was when I was growing up(60s&70s). It wasn’t easier or stress free but it was absolutely slower. This was a good video and gave us plenty to think about.
Hey Diana, a lot of your comments resonate with me. I have cancelled all the streaming subscriptions (ok, mainly because my tv wouldn't play them), but have not missed them after the first week. I replaced watching streaming with you tube on my TV, and started binge watching them too.😢 Now I'm limiting my you tube watching to two of the favourites I am following per day + the local news and weather. Christian content goes to the top of my list. I love how you pray for us all at the end of your segments. Love following Dawn, the minimal Mom as well, and I really must leave a comment on her channel as well. Linda from Tamworth, Australia.
Amen and the great thing about the internet is I found you on here ! And you have reached over 50 k people How amazing is that ! So happy I found you ❤
I don't have Facebook on my phone. I've added a paper calendar instead of using the calendar on my phone. It has other features as well. I also unplug at times while Im quilting for several hours at a time, even music. Total silence and its wonderful to slow my brain down
Thank you for this message! It resonates deeply. Slow DOES make room for us to be refreshed. We ALL crave this. Finding ways to implement this value in small, tangible ways can make a world of difference in our ordinary! You are so loved!
I literally just told someone the other day that everything old is new again for me because i forget😂 i was so excited to watch a movie with my SIL only to find out we already watched it😂
Downton Abbey was such a great series! To see it for the first time was so amazing. It was something that i got to draw closer together to my girl friends.
I felt like we needed to take a step back from all the kids’ extra activities and sports. My husband just transitioned jobs, and we did churches as well, so life has been rather hectic-the Lord knew! It has made it easier to slow down with one another and not be in that “hectic hurry” pace all of the time. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think having less of those extra activities is so good for family-your kids really are only small for so long and this opens the door for more time together. ❤️ We even had some new friends over for dinner and have done more with our regular friends-it’s been so good!
Thanks Diana! We Getting stuck in social media is wasting my time. I went back to my hobbies and enjoy that time more. We appreciate your prayer and you info. Good discussion points. Have a great weekend and holiday 👋💕😀
I love to listen to your wise and loving words. Your words always seem to speak straight to my heart. You are so real and honest and that helps me connect and think ‘yes I feel like that, I do that too’. And gives me encouragement and confidence to move forward. Bless you !
I deleted Instagram. The scrolling has no end. I don't want my head down when I'm in public. I don't want to miss opportunities. RUclips is the last one I'm hanging onto, lol
I hid FB with the later apps on my phone, so I don’t see that red dot until I sit down and mindfully choose FB. Also silenced Messenger and made an agreement that it was for sharing things before they leave our heads, for the other to get at their convenience. The funny thing is (maybe because I’m older and have more muscle memory), but it took less than two days for me to not be that ‘called’ by it anymore. And I did feel the relief. 😢 I do limit a little you, Dawn and Cooking w/ Brenda Gantt (I do love older ladies that love!), but keep you all! RUclips is where I listen to MY Fav Worship Music or a periodic spiritual study. But for some reason it hasn’t addicted me. Thank you God! What helps to motivate me is seeing what is happening to ‘littles’ from too much screen exposure! It’s almost like we are creating two different races of people unaware of the effects of technology (the littles are hyper), and those trying to combat it. There are several videos out of toddlers having horrible temper tantrums when a device is taken away, or threatening their parents! TODDLERS! But what breaks my heart is the one crying on their side in bed, air-scrolling on a non-existent iPad!! We are mutating babies brains, kidnapping them from a life they could have had, to one they may not be able to get back from! It makes my cry, but I’m just an older lady without promotion knowledge. Diana and Dawn, if you could brainstorm this movement! Making people aware in a positive way, I’ll be your no charge assistant! 😊 I’m thorough and detail-oriented! I just don’t have a following or no where to start! But I’d work my butt off to help save more littles coming up, from a world of cold devices being their Lives!! 😢
Thank you for talking about this idea of “soul fatigue”. I care very much about people, but absolutely feel this from time to time and have to completely check out for a while until I feel better. It made me feel guilty that I would feel this way, because I truly do care. You talking about soul fatigue being “a thing” and the reasons behind it, makes me feel a lot less guilty. Thank you Diana!! ❤
With TV series I think you mean, right? I've noticed that too, though that can be tough! As I first read, I thought you meant Diana's videos and I was confused! Are you pausing it to pray, or...? 😉
I agree with cutting out TV- I watch one show with hubby saved for a weekend night where we don't have to work or clean house after the kids are in bed. It helps me sleep better and I don't have the constant pull to go binge watch more.
Life goes by so fast, and if we don't take time to slow down, we will miss... a lot! I accidentally left my phone at church in the office, yesterday and was without it for about 12 hours, and it was so nice not to just be able to grab it and check e-mail, Pinterest, etc. I feel that the news can be too much; we need to know what is going on, but not too much; I like just the highlights. I am seeing that slowing down, especially with our grandbabies, really makes a difference and am realizing how precious that time that we have with them is ❤❤ I have a small circle of sister-friends and I love each of them! Thanks for all you do, Diana 🦋🦋
Where do those kids fit in the circles? Mine are 25 - 34 and while I don't hear from all of them in the same way, two of them I have their opinions on everything! I'd also say that as I am fairly recently divorced, the loss of the marriage partnership is the most exhausting. Even though my children are all adults it's an ON switch broken in the ON position. There are pieces to be picked up and no one is helping with that.
I love your shirt today! Can you please share the source? More importantly, this was a great video and really had me thinking about the small and slow idea. Those of us who are introverts are not drawn to crowds of people, but the idea of small intimate friend-groups is very appealing! I have to admit that I FEEL the dopamine rush of YT and Amazon, and I'm working to diminish the power they have over me!
Hey All! I feel way more centered and calm when I don't check my phone till 11-12 noon. Having set aside times to check messages helps. Also, my husband put my text apps on my computer, so when I am online, I can check texts without handling the phone.
Girl! The streaming has got me recently, man what’s that. I have been praying for self control to just stop or else I’m watching one thing after the other!
I hand water my garden plants, shrubs and trees, dragging the hose and sprinkler around. 2000square metres. Shlepp but I know where every rainbow resides. Even have a double rainbow in my bamboo corner.❤❤
Ever since you & Dawn shared the study about better sleep after reading fiction even 10 min per night right before lights out, I have been consistently reading and being so blessed by Biblical historical fiction each night. What a life-enriching habit! It has made parts of the Bible come alive to me that were previously dry to me or just not very impactful. So thankful for the amazing authors I’ve discovered. So after watching this video I want to share this with you: First, I totally get & share your love of Downton Abbey! Have watched the whole series through more than once (and visited Highclere Castle & other filming sites! 😍) But we watch it or similar Masterpiece series together on the big screen BEFORE we go to bed! (Also loved Home Fires and our current favorite is All Creatures Great & Small. We don’t really watch other TV except The Chosen & SEC football 😉and sometimes vintage Hallmark or GAC movies.) Most nights we watch a bit of our current series together on big screen either with our 7-yr-old son or after he is in bed. Even though those types of series can be enjoyed multiple times, don’t rush through them! If you just watch one episode or even part of one episode per night, you can go to bed on time and still end your day with reading a bit of your fiction book (or The Word), leading to better sleep & enough sleep! One more tip - if you gotta binge-watch Downton, make yourself do it in the treadmill!! It’s one of my favorite ways to help me get my steps in, especially if the weather isn’t conducive to walking outside!
Shoutout to Downton Abbey, no matter how you feel. I've seen the whole series over 10 times... But never bingewatched. I give myself a break every now and then and use it as a reward.
I was watching Little House on the Prairie one time and thinking about the slow pace that was built into their every day lives. That is what is missing now. Also, a few years ago, I went off social media for one month. I felt the brain fog go away, the focus and concentration come back, and a desire that increased in wanting to see people in person. Right now it's easy to become distracted with the phone and ignore my house that needs cleaned. (Empty nesters)I think Social media is a way to avoid certain stressors and it initially feels like it fills in empty spaces, but ironically the hole seems to get bigger. I just ordered the 40 Day Social media fast someone else mentioned. When to try this? 🤔
I don't watch any TV or streaming services. Way too busy and nothing that interests me. I do watch some news. I would much rather do a craft, read a book, bake or cook something from scratch, garden or get some exercise.
Remember that you wanted those children now cherish every moment that you have with them. Because the people that said in a blink of an eye, your children are no longer there. That's the truth. Don't wait until that happens and realize you didn't cherish those moments with them.

Me too! So thankful I’m making this choice. And it’s for when I have extra time (less than an hour, rather than five!)
I love this story, thank you so much for sharing. Great perspective!! 💛

Yes, we need to cherish the moments, but that doesn't negate the fact that the moments can be very hard at times.

If you keep the large 150 group, how will you be able to add 1 more person? A smaller group of good friends is an asset.
