Thank you for sharing this information about GM's electronic throttle bodies. It's good to know that there is a new fix available for the issue and that you have shared a helpful video demonstrating how to replace the TPS sensor and clean the throttle body bore. This will definitely be useful for anyone who is experiencing problems with their electronic throttle body. Keep up the great work!
Hello Mike, thank you for the info on the electronic throttle body reset. I had to change out the intake plenum on a Buick Rendezvous 3500 v6, I got a used plenum from a local yard, cleaned, and changed all gaskets and butterfly 'O' ring. Got everything back together and made one simple mistake. That was ''I didn't connect my 13-wire connector to the throttle body and started the engine. I was not a happy camper, I saw your video on testing front ABS sensors on a Buick vehicle and the test equipment you use. So I decided to watch your videos from now on. I'm going to attempt to do the relearning process and get let you know. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I've had good luck with the kit and the idle relearn went great with all but one. It would high idle and if I put it in gear it would idle down and stay there until I blipped the throttle and the high idle would come back. Cleared the KAM several times no luck. Drove it and every time I went to slow down it was at high idle, come to a stop and idle would return to normal idle, hit throttle and high idle. It had the high idle when it came in before the TPS was changed. Reprogrammed the PCM and car idled perfectly and it was the only thing that made sense. If you ever run into it there are several forums like iATN, Suretrack, etc where the fix is reprogram the PCM

Hello Mike, Toyota corolla throttle body sensor back probe key on; grd wire reads0.01v opened close throttle no response; Middle wire signal reads 12.36v; bat 12.65v; 5volt ref wire reads 1.67v no throttle resistance. Ohm meter disconnected connector exposing throttle pins clipping grd and signal pin to ohm meter it reads 1.814ohms open/close no response is this a defective sensor? Respectfully, Alexander Gonzalez.
Hey Alexander, long time! Hope all is well! From what you're describing it sounds like it could be a bad sensor. When you open/close the throttle body you should show a varying voltage output on the signal wire. What does the scan tool do? Can you see data and see throttle voltage or percentage? Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Don;t have an oscilloscope wave form picture. On-board diagnostic tool did not pull up a throttle body code. Remember, this was the Toyota corolla 2000, that repeatedly kept pulling PO171 leans code. We fixed it; it was intake manifold gasket; the code disappeared for 3 months. Same code came back PO171 because the fuel pump was weak losing pressure; so P0171 was a deferring false code pointing to fuel pump; fuel pump was replaced and along with was another pre-existing symptom. I had failed to tell you at that time, about a consistent soft infrequent hesitation, while idling and driving; head lights powering down, then brightening; power high while driving, then slight lose of power jerking the car while driving; this is the throttle sensor. I floored the throttle, after testing new fuel pump with fuel pressure gauge on, it worked to SPEC PRESSURE WAS 45lbs, THEN IT JUMPED TO 55LBS, it wanted to start; it was hesitating, so I floored it, the accelerator. I heard then, a loud sound, like switches; it shut down like a kill switch activated; it was the throttle sensor and possibly the the vane kill switch inside the mass air sensor. The sounds came from the center of engine and under driver side kick panel. where I found an after market kill switch. Since then, the car was able to crank however when the anti-theft circuits kicked in, it blocked the starter relay from cranking. I drain the ecms receptors capacitors erasing the anti theft memory, so it cranks now but will not start because of this throttle sensor. My the thermistors read 5v reference communication with ecm works, it is not dead, like I thought. Its great to see you again. I have been studying my old mechanics and circuit integrity books enjoying continued education at home. I have appreciated the value of the scope you use even more then ever; the amp and volt meters too, very much. And most of all your classes and videos! I would love to train with you seriously now!
Hello Mike, The scanned tool pulled up an open circuit relay pending code, that feeds the fuel pump. I don't know how to test the relay under load? On that same wire leg before the fuel pump is the neutral safety switch,it shares the ground to fuel pump, which is not working in park, it only cranks in neutral. All three components share the ground; perhaps I am wrong the relay open circuit is on power side. There're 2 fuses in engine fuse box both diagonal from each other, both 10 amps, they are undamaged without power, the horn and head light. Inside, under the dash fuse box is an ignition fuse, with asterisks, also 10 amps undamaged without power. The throttle signal wire voltage is 12.36v short to ground. I am just learning how to do voltage drop test to ground with meter neg terminal on bat neg to check ground side; negative terminal to battery positive, to test power side of the load. its confusing to mind blending concepts causes confusion. It is so cold out, intolerable to work outside. The battery is out of car on a trickle charge however will the ecm forget or remember, when battery is installed or will it fall asleep and not wake up? Do I need to relearn the ecm and how is it done? Respectfully, AG
I have a question... my 2003 5.3 Flex w/ 180k+ is giving random misfire. I've changed: plugs, wires, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, MAF, throttle body sensor and in the process of changing the coils and the entire throttle body.My question is: should the middle sprocket/gear freely slide inside the throttle body. Or should it be firmly affixed to the stem that it is on inside the throttle body?Thank you.
Hey Bamaborn74, if I remember right the gear was pretty loose on there. If you were to flip the TB over it would fall off. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
I was having random multiple cylinder misfires on my 5.3. I changed the intake gasket, alternator, and the number one coil. But I didn't know not to move the throttle plate.... Now I'm trying the relearn procedure, no luck yet....
Thanks a lot for the video. I have a Mitsubishi Outlander 2008 2.4L where the RPM fluctuates only in the morning until it warms up then everything becomes normal. No codes. I feel a lack of power and it doesn't shift after the second gear unless I removed my feet from the accelerator pedal and put it back. I'm suspecting the throttle position sensor, any idea? Cheers
Hello.I have a car meredes W210 compressor with engine 2.0 liter, and I have a problem with compressor, you know near the compressor there is a same tipe valve between the air filter and compressor.I remove filter and see the valve position it were open, I run the car push the acceleration pedal bat valve not turning it stai open and no motion.is the valve stuck what is the problem? Say me please what is tha valve position if power is off??I think the valve must be closed.
Hi Edgar, what valve is this that you're talking about? are you talking about the throttle valve? The flap in the throttle body? Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@@GoTechTraining Not throttle valve, it is near the compressor. This valve supply compressor air to the engine, then this air passing through throttle valve and MAF( mass air flow ) sensor, then to the engine. But both valves have a same construction.
I'm sorry Edgar, but i'm not familiar with which valve you're speaking of. Is this like a blow off/wastegate type valve? Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@@GoTechTraining Ok for throttle valve for example there isn't electrical power car isn't run. What is the right position of throttle valve flap? Open or close?
The throttle body attached to the air filter housing will remain open until the engine exceeds 2500 rpm. When the engine exceeds 2500 rpm, the throttle will close to redirect air into the supercharger. The 2.3 Kompressor engine has a dedicated throttle body for normal air intake attached to the intake manifold. Your Supercharger (Kompressor) air bypass throttle body is working normally in this case.
@@GoTechTraining local auto parts store wants $120. For sensor pack and $180 for the complete unit: sensor and throttle body. I just bought the complete unit
Sam, a bad TPS could cause all kinds of issues on a drive by wire car. I assume your vehicle is stuck in limp mode or "reduced power mode". Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Ok So I need that sensor for my 08 TrailBlazer but the dealership tells me I have to buy the whole throttle body. They do t want to sell me just the sensor. What can I do.?
HI Junior, What engine does your Trailblazer have? I don't think all engines have a replacement TPS sensor cover available. I believe only the V-8, 5.3, and 6.0's have kits available. Ryan Wilsing
Ok... Strange. Today the truck started like nothing happened .! I'm confused, if that sensor to throttle body goes bad, is not supposed to work the next day. So... In thinking the fuel pump.?
The sensor can fail intermittently, This is why the engine can run good again. Every time you cycle the key, the engine computer will reset and check for issues. If the TPS cover is not glitching at the time the engine will run good until it sees the glitch. I hope this helps Ryan Wilsing
You should remove the gear to check the teeth beneath it. They are poly and are notorious for wearing or breaking and is often the cause of failure and limp home scenarios.
Hey Mike thanks for the video. I did everything like you did and when I start my Silverado. it idled perfect, until I touch the gas pedal . then the rpms went up to 3000 and would decrease to about 2800 and hold there. Did I not install the sensor correctly? any feedback would greatly be appreciated.
@@GoTechTraining Mine worked perfectly after replacing the Throttle Body Sensor, but here recently it has started revving to 3k rpms on cold starts. Have you ever dealt with that?
@@blakemckinley2990 me too! Trying to find the answer myself. A mechanic said most likey if you cleaned it, like I did there may be deposits sticking the plate or I have to get a new TB 😳

Hello Mike. I have a 2004 Nissan Murano with the code p2135: TP sensor code. The vehicle accelerator pedal keeps being unresponsive. When this happen, you let it cool off, and you regain acceleration. I am asking myself how the tp sensor can trigger this unresponsiveness when it only reports the throttle opening and speed. Do I have a short somewhere?
Hey, on a drive by wire system if the TP sensor is not reacting properly it will put the vehicle in limp or reduced power mode. This will not allow you to accelerate the vehicle. Chances are you have an issue with the TP sensor, wiring, or the throttle body itself. You could try cleaning the throttle body and seeing if that helps first. Can a throttle body be safely opened manually (pushing the flap like you did) while it is still installed? I cleaned mine but because it was in the closed position I only did the outside.
Jeff. you can safely do it. I highly recommend unplugging it first. Shut the key off, unplug the throttle body, then clean it. Those motors have a ton of torque and could cause bodily harm...better to be 100% certain there is no power going to it! Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

The teeth on the black gear which is connected to the throttle plate looks likes it's worn out. Looks almost like it's worn where it is normally used which is between idle and 70% throttle. Is this normal for say a new throttle body?
Hey Reweydewy, I don't think there is any significant wear. At least none that is currently affecting operation. This car has been back on the road now for about a month and a half, and no reported issues. I do see what you are seeing, where the black gear does look slightly worn. I would assume a new one to not show that at all. Should any problems arise down the road with this car I will make sure to shoot another video detailing on wear on the black gear. I also will keep my eyes open for more of these and see how they look. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

My normally trouble-free 2010 Silverado went to reduced engine power on the highway in Boston at 3 a.m. in 0 degree weather while bringing my son to the airport-that was a nice surprise. I appreciate you taking the time to give good instruction and thanks for replying.

Hopefully someone can help. My son has a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8. Some genius removed one of the vacuum tubes from the base of the throttle body and put a screw in place. Can this tube be replaced or do I have to buy another throttle body. If I can replace the tubing what’s the size? Thanks
Well done, does this sensor exist for 2011 Chevrolet captiva 2.0 ltz C100, and how do I get the instructions..thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Hello Mike,
Toyota corolla throttle body sensor back probe key on; grd wire reads0.01v opened close throttle no response; Middle wire signal reads 12.36v; bat 12.65v; 5volt ref wire reads 1.67v no throttle resistance.
Ohm meter disconnected connector exposing throttle pins clipping grd and signal pin to ohm meter it reads 1.814ohms open/close no response is this a defective sensor?
Respectfully,
Alexander Gonzalez.
Hello Mike,
The scanned tool pulled up an open circuit relay pending code, that feeds the fuel pump.
Respectfully,
AG

I have a question... my 2003 5.3 Flex w/ 180k+ is giving random misfire. I've changed: plugs, wires, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, MAF, throttle body sensor and in the process of changing the coils and the entire throttle body.My question is: should the middle sprocket/gear freely slide inside the throttle body. Or should it be firmly affixed to the stem that it is on inside the throttle body?Thank you.
Hey Bamaborn74, if I remember right the gear was pretty loose on there. If you were to flip the TB over it would fall off.

I was having random multiple cylinder misfires on my 5.3. I changed the intake gasket, alternator, and the number one coil. But I didn't know not to move the throttle plate.... Now I'm trying the relearn procedure, no luck yet....
Can we spray throttle cleaner inside throttle body means gear and teeth assembly?
Hey S Khan, sure, you could clean out the gears if you want to but you'll want to make sure to get a little grease back in there.

Cheers
I'm having the same issues. If you found a solution could you please share? Cheers! Lol

Can a bad TPS cause car to run only in 1st gear? Or is that some other problem?
Sam, a bad TPS could cause all kinds of issues on a drive by wire car. I assume your vehicle is stuck in limp mode or "reduced power mode".
Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
Ok So I need that sensor for my 08 TrailBlazer but the dealership tells me I have to buy the whole throttle body. They do t want to sell me just the sensor. What can I do.?

Ok...
I hope this helps
Ryan Wilsing
You should remove the gear to check the teeth beneath it. They are poly and are notorious for wearing or breaking and is often the cause of failure and limp home scenarios.
You should make a video yourself?!?😮
Hey Mike thanks for the video. I did everything like you did and when I start my Silverado. it idled perfect, until I touch the gas pedal . then the rpms went up to 3000 and would decrease to about 2800 and hold there. Did I not install the sensor correctly? any feedback would greatly be appreciated.
Hey Handy Kim, is it setting codes?

@@GoTechTraining Mine worked perfectly after replacing the Throttle Body Sensor, but here recently it has started revving to 3k rpms on cold starts. Have you ever dealt with that?

The Mini Cooper I worked on a couple of months ago experienced that same code, I believe it was a p2135. Turned out to be a really clogged air filter and I also cleaned the throttle body plate. Problem fixed in that case. I have not changed/updated the TPS on a GM throttle body. Looks easy enough judging by your vid!
Isn't it crazy what a clogged up air filter can do!? I am actually going to be demonstrating that in the class we have planned for next week.
It is easy enough, those clips can kind of be a bit of a bear though! I definitely struggled with them a bit in this video lol.

I pushed the flap manually when the TP body was connected and Engine OFF. Do you think I should change the hole TP body or only the sensor?
This does not work at all, finally had to the Idle Relearn Reset with a Snap On Modis; without it the actual and indicated angles are not synchronized correctly no matter what you try to do otherwise.
Hey Metal Maniac, sorry to hear that. The procedure does work. This vehicle did not require a scan tool to get it functional again.
