  • (15 Nov 2017) BACK-TO-BACK AUCTIONS REVEAL THE WIDE ARRAY OF ITEMS THAT QUALIFIES AS 'MEMORABILIA'
From a stunt performer's motorcycle jacket to a necklace worn in one of the most beloved films ever made to a glove made for an Apollo astronaut -- it's one eclectic batch of items going up on the auction block this weekend in Beverly Hills.
Julien's Auctions holds its annual "Hollywood Icons and Idols" auction Friday (17NOV2017), which delivers what's promised. As one walks into Julien's showroom in Beverly Hills, there's a large display of dresses worn by entertainer July Garland.
"She's on the red carpet. She's taking center stage," noted Julien's Executive Director Martin Nolan. "All of her amazing and major movies are represented in this auction on Friday. You have dresses from 'Easter Parade,' 'Me and My Gal,' 'A Star is Born,' my personal favorite 'Meet Me in St. Louis.' That red dress she wore when she sang 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' with Margaret O'Brien as a child, and Margaret was crying and Judy was trying to console her and singing this song. We watch the movie every Christmas. We're very nostalgic. And that's going on the auction block. It's a really important piece and Margaret O'Brien will be here at the auction as well on Friday to witness this piece of history changing hands. So, a fantastic collection, really a great celebration of Judy's life and career."
The Friday auction also lives up to the "Icon" part of the promise, with items including a jacket worn by stunt performer Evil Knievel, a rocking chair gifted by U.S. president John F. Kennedy, and a Nobel Prize medal awarded to Sir Cyril Norman Hinshelwood in 1956 by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for chemistry.
On Saturday Julien's auction is all about the jewels of Joseff of Hollywood, one of the earliest high-profile jewelers to the studios.
"He had like a secret resin recipe he called it, that he used at the backing of the stones when he set the stones into the jewelry pieces that allowed that the stones to absorb the light rather than bounce back or reflect back at the cameras," Nolan noted. "And so it makes the jewelry really pop on screen."
Among the many pieces to be auctioned off will be jewels worn by Elizabeth Taylor in "Cleopatra" and Vivien Leigh in "Gone With the Wind."
