  • This 2008 Acura RSX Turbo AWD drove to my shop from 4 hours away with a whole LAUNDRY LIST of customer complaints:
In PART 1, we tackle the first two customer complaints:
-P2263 TURBO Performance: intermittently sets on the highway and disables AWD
-DOME lights quit working after a recent repair to address a water intrusion problem.
In PART 2, I deal with the remaining 2 problems:
-Parasitic Battery Drain: power windows stay ACTIVE?
    -Air Conditioning: Intermittent Operation

Use a laser beam to scan for small invisible smog leaks. The beam becomes interrupted and visible when passing through the tiniest smoke stream.

I consistently find myself admiring Ivan’s reliance upon methodical diagnostic methods and not just experience. He knew the Greenie’s struck that connector and it was due to the water intrusion most likely, but still maintained course from start.

If you pop up the secondary lock on that connector where the pins broke you'll find a lot more corrosion to clean off. I used to work at an acura dealer and we delt with this very often

Soon as you mentioned the customer complaint about water intrusion on the drivers side, knew immediately you were going to find corrosion.
Sooooo many cars have large wire harness connectors and/or fuse blocks on the sidewall of the drivers footwell.
Water in that area is baaaaaaaad news.

I owned a 1966 VW bug. It had a 6 Volt battery. In 67, VW went to a 12 volt battery, like the rest of the industry. 12 volts has been fine up until the present day when there are so many modules, motors, lights, cameras, etc etc etc that depend on that single 12v battery. Now, add to that plugs with tiny pins to connect all this stuff, mouse loving protein based wire insulation, and you have a disaster in the making, or as I like to say " A perfect storm of idiocy" It does not take much resistance in these systems to foil that original 12 volts.

  • @windward2818

With the green crusties pins if you rinse with Deoxit D5 and then blow out excess, it is best to add Deoxit D100L in the little brush bottle and then cycle the connectors 2 or 3 times. This will help clean the wiping surfaces and lubricate the pin contact area fully.
You can try this experiment on the bench with a set of oxidized mating pins. Add Deoxit D100L to the pins and then as you cycle the connection you will notice the pin connection become smoother and clean up. This cycling is especially needed with low current circuits using gold plated pins (pressure transducers, knock sensors, etc.), because the pin contacts clean up and mate more easily which will help with low current circuits (which must have a minimum contact wetting current for the pin plating used).
For an additional disconnect I keep a stock of Deutsch connectors (DT, and DTM, both have seals so they can be used under the hood or in the passenger compartment). The Deutsch pins come in many different types (crimping tool used) and plating.

I have the same exact car and year. Hmmm you try to Disconnect the Bluetooth module under the shifter? It’s a common parasitic draw candidate for these RDXs. I also had intermittent problem with the turbo code. I ended up firing the parts cannon can ended up replacing the worn eye bolt, then the map sensor on the inter cooler and the one next to the boost bypass valve, then bought two new boost solenoids on the driver side behind the valve cover facing the firewall, and that fixed my problems. What I understand is since these are electrical they just wore out overtime and may exhibit erratic readings in random times. Just a thought…

Tough one, Ivan! The dome lights were the "easy" part. Parasitic draw / doors, may also be related to the water intrusion, but in other connector - I saw a network code, and a module may be kept alive through green crusties. But the turbo will be the main course, maybe on Part 2 :-)

You do get the good one my friend. I did a NPR on my 08 HHR. The dash storage box wasn't releasing. Took the latch apart and found the button wasn't pushing the latch fully open. Filled the space between the button stem and latch contact with some hot glue then filled down until latch would catch. When press button the lach would fully release. Beats $50 for bone yard part or $150 for oem new one.

At the 14 minute mark, the intercooler looks like there was some non-factory aluminum welding in the 4 corners, and the black rusted metal brackets do not look original. I am suspecting the intercooler is lifting or splitting under boost pressure. An Evap smoke machine can not create enough pressure to re-create the leak under boost. How about removing the intercooler & inspecting the pipes, hoses, & seals?

Ivan next time you do a plug wiring bypass like that instead of doing short wires that are twisted in heat shrink consider a 5 to 10" piece of wire and tywrap the folded up wire on itself,, that way with one clip of your cutter you can easily unplug the connector and have full access...

A big problem with the automotive repair industry is good diagnostic is not rewarded. Let’s say a tech spends 20k on the best diag equipment, studies, and trains. Tech “A” without that equipment or knowledge charges hours for diag and thousands on parts. Then tech “B” with the best stuff and procedures finds a bad ground in 45 minutes. There is no reward for the investment. I am a really good diag guy and I left the industry because I had to repair 2 or 3 times as many vehicles as a hack to make the same money. Fixing these problem cars from shops was so easy for me it was funny but after some time I became resentful and couldn’t do it any more.

You either got to get in with a shop that pays hourly or move to Marine, heavy truck, or equipment where you get paid hourly.

PineHollow you are very good. And the way you go through your process with what information you have at each point in time is great. I watch to see if I could beat you punch on a given car. Occasionally you do smoke me but I smoke you also. Picking the correct direction in the start of a diag when you have limited information is the biggest time savor.

Ref the 2 broken pins in the block connector - To keep the block connector serviceable, as an alternative to your neat shrink wrap method, could you use an additional length of wire, soldered to each end of the corresponding wires but actually passing through the empty block connector pin / pin socket? If a suitable length of additional wiring is used the block connector could then still be unplugged and the plastic housing slid along the additional wire length to clear the pins and pin sockets for inspection/testing/maintenance.

I think u didnt use male/female connectors knowing the water damage frustrations are going to get worse. my Q7 is plagued with water damage from the insanely dumb design of the roof draining onto the down tubes instead of into them. they glue the tubes together after 5+ years glue deteriorates and water starts flowing down the outside of the down tubes onto the bose amp, the nav system, the phone circuit and thats just the rear damage, I cant see what the front ones are doing!
