Girl you need to do a dark history episode on HUMAN ZOOs… I literally had never heard of them in my 30+ years and they didn’t happen that long ago. They DEFINITELY didn’t teach that in our history classes down here in south Florida and I’ve never even heard of anyone speaking about it… it is WILD. I hope you read this xoxoxox

My mom even bought tickets for my sister and I to ride an elephant. We got on it, they whipped the elephant to start walking and I screamed that I wanted off. I cried the whole way home telling my mom I thought the elephant was crying but she kept saying no it’s eyes were just watering. I never went back 🐘 😭

I got my popcorn out, My mom's father was in his sixties when my mom was born belonged to the circus from 1917 to 1930ish. he was acrobatic alone with his 2 brothers were the Ferraro brothers. (You can see them for 20 sec in an old movie called Sally the sawdust, with W.B Fields)
Then as he got older & got into an Argument with his half brothers & my grandmother thought he was messing around with a woman, he became a clown along with my grandmother & used his bio- father's last name Ragone(my grandfather's first was Michael Ferraro then change to Michael Ragone & my Grandmother's was Jennie)
I have news article clippings I have his diary, I have posters,
I have pictures. Italian immigrants he and his brothers joined not because they wanted to but because they wanted to eat.
    He was in his teens.

Side-note- I know my grandfather & others would always get in trouble when animals were introduced, the animals would be treated badly & they would try to stop it.

My Meemaw ran away at 16 to join the Smarts Brothers Circus in Scotland. I have this love hate relationship with that fact because she was young and didn’t know all what’s goes on when “training” the elephants, she just rode them and loved them. But how many people can say, ‘my grandmother joined the circus.’ She ended up getting pregnant by a Bulgarian trapeze artist and having to go back home, so it was short lived. But she was quite the woman with many amazing stories.

Faculty/ students/ employees still hear kids running around and playing, footprints on freshly mopped floors when no students are at the school and bathroom sinks running in locations that students couldn’t access. Some of my staff that were at this location reported other things happening as well. No reports of people being hurt by the spirits.

I found your videos recently. I came across this video, and growing up close to the Ringling circus - wanted to ensure the history is accurate as you tell it (it is).
I remember all the hub-bub around treating animals, the multiple burns of the big top, the removal of their right to own all animals except elephants, to the removal of elephants in their show and them not being able to have ANY animals on site. The local PD takes allegations seriously as well now.
They used their back-up big top during the time the big one burned, until that burned too.
The Ringling Brothers are still celebrated in the community to this day. One of the descendants brought in the local theater, but the biggest part of their name is the circus and all it was and stood for. That's how people know the Ringling name around the world.
Elephant arts carved into the concrete can be found on some of the corners in the sidewalks, iron animal casts can be seen on the north block of the city's court house. There is still hallmarks to the circus all over the town and they are building more. It's sickening.
They since replaced the big top recently. I'm shocked they still get business with the dark past of what that circus was and still is.
No one in the community believed they weren't abusing the animals either. We all thought they were lying. I was raised in that town, sadly.

Hartford, CT. The day the clowns cried. Every year on the anniversary the media still covers it. There was one little girl who wasn’t identified until a few years ago and that identity is still debated. Little Miss 1565. Very sad story about body identification back then.
I keep remembering things. There still is a Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT. I came upon it when I got to a concert venue early and walked around a few streets. It was closed. The actor and perpetual game show guest, Charles Nelson Reilly, was in the fire at age 13. His description of the events and how certain places bring back that day sound like PTSD. He was once on the Merv Griffin talk show, I watched every day after school (Yes, I am that old.) and Merv asked him if he was popular in high school. He said no. He lost the lead in the school play to Harold Portner. Merv asked, “And where is HE now?” Well, I knew. He was our high school music teacher! I live just south of Hartford.

Bailey I’m so jealous of the robes that you have on! They look comfy. Also, I’ve been sending some of your videos to my aunt as she’s a middle school biology teacher and she loves how educational your videos are.

Only 21 minutes in but wondering is bailey is going to touch on the horrific story of Julia Pastrona, an indiginous woman from mexican who was forced into marriage with her manager in freak shows all over Russia. Really hard to hear horrible story but that’s what circuses lead to in my mind.

The circus side shows and outrageous claims they made reminds me of the saying “there’s a sucker born every minute.” That’s still true today.
And why am I not surprised that circus conmen ended up in Congress? And oh yes, you know lobbyists line the pockets of lawmakers so they will vote to maintain the status quo of corrupt businesses. Hence laws being lenient and looking the other way with animal abuse. And those who refuse to be bribed…well the lobbyists give large donations to the campaign of a more agreeable competitor who’s running against you, or just take out ads to drown out your campaign. Basically they go to war against you. We need to get the money out of politics, because power and money corrupts totally. Always has, always will.

Hello Bailey. I am one of your fans from Montréal (Québec). I first knew about you on Facebook despite the fact that I live under a rock. I recently discovered your RUclips channel and I was very pleased to see what your work has become. I really appreciate your Dark History podcast and the very obviously rigorous work you put into all of you videos. I wish you the best in the future!
