I live and grew up in CT and I remember my Grandmother telling me about the fire in Hartford. She didn't live that far away from it, about 2-3 towns away and she said that the smoke was easily visible at her home along with the smell. So sad ALL those lives lost and injured including the animals all for a few dollars!!
I'm so glad I stumbled upon this channel! I loved the circus as a child and even when my children were little. Then I began to read about it and learn the horrific exploitation that went on. I will never forget the night I was pumping gas in rural Virginia and saw the Ringling Bros. train pass on its last voyage. I just stood there and cried for all the people and animals who fell victim to the "Darkest Show on Earth."
As a descendant of the same Ricketts family (and a long time Bailey fan) having my last name and a distant relative of mine mentioned in a Bailey video has made my day 🙏🏻
“It was this moment when majestic wild animals became prisoners.” 😭 and this is why I only go to zoos/aquariums that house injured animals or those that cannot survive in the wild by themselves.
I went to a RB&BB circus in the 80s when they had "unicorns." I was enchanted. Later I found out how awful the circus is and was very, very sad. Thank you for a brilliant documentary.
I NEVER & I mean NEVER, took my daughter to the circus as a little girl… the cruelty is disturbing… The way they would “train” the poor elephants🐘 I could cry!🥺
Yeah I'm okay with curcuses who only have acrobats and clowns and no animals, like cirque soleil as example. Some of those people are extremely talanted and hard working. No excuse to have animals nowadays.
I know in the past the circus was awful but fyi modern circus is amazing and more often then not , there are no animals. Now it is basically just acrobats, gymnasts and aerialists
when I was five years old, my family went to see a circus in the next biggest town. one of the aerial acrobats ended up falling and breaking her neck. we were sitting in the front row. my mother is a doctor, and was the one that ran to help her. unfortunately, she died at the hospital that day. my sibling was the last person to ever get her autograph and picture with her. i’m so scared of circuses to this day
Fun fact: You know the fire that took place in Hartford CT? The one where they waterproofed the tent with wax and Gasoline? At 53:00? I work at the school that was built on top of it. There’s a memorial in the back. Many ghost sightings 👀
I love waiting for your shows and stories every Monday and Thursday I can't get enough of them. And I even watch the past ones I haven't seen so I can get caught up on. I'm never disappointed. Thank you.
My Meemaw ran away at 16 to join the Smarts Brothers Circus in Scotland. I have this love hate relationship with that fact because she was young and didn’t know all what’s goes on when “training” the elephants, she just rode them and loved them. But how many people can say, ‘my grandmother joined the circus.’ She ended up getting pregnant by a Bulgarian trapeze artist and having to go back home, so it was short lived. But she was quite the woman with many amazing stories.
Interesting fact from a Hartford girl, the site of this tragedy now houses a school. Faculty/ students/ employees still hear kids running around and playing, footprints on freshly mopped floors when no students are at the school and bathroom sinks running in locations that students couldn’t access. Some of my staff that were at this location reported other things happening as well. No reports of people being hurt by the spirits.
I think the hard part is if she does, people could say dumb things like "it's not your culture/religion/country, you don't know anything " or that it can be difficult to truly know other cultures without delving into them personally because all cultures have their silence the truth quota
The movie sure did make him out to be a hero! And the way it portrayed the “curiosities” and how they were treated in the movie is awful compared to the truth! It WAS one of my favorite movies, but now I’m just disgusted! Greatest Showman, my a$$!
Love this.... Everyone used to joke "what are you going to run away and join the Circus?" It was no joke in my family - my grandfather ran off and joined the Circus and his family never saw him again - he died in the 60s in Dade Co., Florida, where Ringling Brothers was headquartered. You always tell great stories!

My grandparents took us as kids to the huge Barnum and Bailey's 3 ring circus and we were mezmerized. This would've been back in the 70's before the negative info came out about circuses, but with child eyes, it was fascinating. My mom also trained as one of those ladies who spun from her neck on a suspended rope. There is a Circus World Museum in Wisconsin that she is in pics somewhere. Knowing what I know now, it makes those memories sad, though my grandparents never had any ill intent. At least we are becoming better with knowledge and learning.

I'm scared to listen to this because I know how horrific the circus treats it's animals, especially the exotics. My heart can't bare hearing about this abuse.
@@gnostic268 my parents had a farm; 365 acres of lush clover with the best barns, fans for every horse, too quality feed, etc. There was a circus (not naming here due to internet trolls) that had white horses for summer, black for winter. Each string only worked 6 months of the year. The other 6 months they paid to board them with us! These animals were loved, obviously well trained, and treated really well. Better than most people treat their kids. My parents also boarded horses for the big hospital CEOs, the wife of a big real estate mogul, pet pony of the mayor’s son, etc. The circus folk made sure their animals got the same top notch care that the big wigs did. I doubt they abused the heck out of them for 6 months just to turn around and pay for 6 months at the spa. And they always came to us with neatly trimmed feet, no scabs or scars, bright and happy.
@@lindseyt240 That’s the difference. Your parents weren’t doing it to make obscene money at the cost of human and animal lives. Their animals were well treated and loved on. This company treated their animals horribly. Your parents sound like an actual even t I would be willing to support.

@@holiwood72 yes it had Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. Ok story but it is very graphic with the animal abuse depicted so I had a hard time watching it.
I found your videos recently. I came across this video, and growing up close to the Ringling circus - wanted to ensure the history is accurate as you tell it (it is). I remember all the hub-bub around treating animals, the multiple burns of the big top, the removal of their right to own all animals except elephants, to the removal of elephants in their show and them not being able to have ANY animals on site. The local PD takes allegations seriously as well now. They used their back-up big top during the time the big one burned, until that burned too. The Ringling Brothers are still celebrated in the community to this day. One of the descendants brought in the local theater, but the biggest part of their name is the circus and all it was and stood for. That's how people know the Ringling name around the world. Elephant arts carved into the concrete can be found on some of the corners in the sidewalks, iron animal casts can be seen on the north block of the city's court house. There is still hallmarks to the circus all over the town and they are building more. It's sickening. They since replaced the big top recently. I'm shocked they still get business with the dark past of what that circus was and still is. No one in the community believed they weren't abusing the animals either. We all thought they were lying. I was raised in that town, sadly.
Hartford, CT. The day the clowns cried. Every year on the anniversary the media still covers it. There was one little girl who wasn’t identified until a few years ago and that identity is still debated. Little Miss 1565. Very sad story about body identification back then. I keep remembering things. There still is a Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT. I came upon it when I got to a concert venue early and walked around a few streets. It was closed. The actor and perpetual game show guest, Charles Nelson Reilly, was in the fire at age 13. His description of the events and how certain places bring back that day sound like PTSD. He was once on the Merv Griffin talk show, I watched every day after school (Yes, I am that old.) and Merv asked him if he was popular in high school. He said no. He lost the lead in the school play to Harold Portner. Merv asked, “And where is HE now?” Well, I knew. He was our high school music teacher! I live just south of Hartford.

The circus side shows and outrageous claims they made reminds me of the saying “there’s a sucker born every minute.” That’s still true today. And why am I not surprised that circus conmen ended up in Congress? And oh yes, you know lobbyists line the pockets of lawmakers so they will vote to maintain the status quo of corrupt businesses. Hence laws being lenient and looking the other way with animal abuse. And those who refuse to be bribed…well the lobbyists give large donations to the campaign of a more agreeable competitor who’s running against you, or just take out ads to drown out your campaign. "Wasn't that fun? You learned about the circus." I can so picture Bailey as a kindergarten teacher. She would be a lot of fun with those little kids. She's make them cute little activists in no time. 😊😊😊
Although she does talk about stuff that happened in history that was bad; she’s more into the uh, story telling aspect of it. But If she can get one person talking about this stuff, that’s a huge deal.
Lol
Why not let just kids be kids instead of feeding them an agenda
@@mindywyse9515 what's so much of an agenda about making kids aware of problems we have in the world? (sorry if I have grammar mistakes english is not my first language)

YESSS BAILEY this isn’t talked about enough. thank you for sticking up for those who can’t do it for themselves
As a descendant of the same Ricketts family (and a long time Bailey fan) having my last name and a distant relative of mine mentioned in a Bailey video has made my day 🙏🏻
Bailey I always feel like I’m in a sleepover listening to you tell these stories in the dark …❤️❤️❤️
She really does look like a twice divorced aunt who drinks wine and gives you all the unfiltered juicy gossip and I love it
😆😆😆 me too. It's so refreshing
So glad I wasn’t the only one who immediately went to a Brittney Spears place. Only circus I’ve ever attended was that tour
That was a great show!
Legit her best song imho
My favorite is Bailey cracking herself up with the “juggling for Jesus” 😂😂
The funniest part is I have in-laws involved in the Russian Circus (they don't have animals in their circus) and they are in fact all Catholics 🤣
I would totally buy it if she makes a shirt with those words!
@@Professionalasshole Came here to say the same thing! We need Juggling for Jesus merch for sure 😂
It needs to be her merch shirt 🖤
I NEVER & I mean NEVER, took my daughter to the circus as a little girl… the cruelty is disturbing… The way they would “train” the poor elephants🐘 I could cry!🥺
I refuse to go to circuses, zoos, or rodeos. It’s just inhumane.
I refused to take my kids also.
Do you take her to the zoo or aquarium?
when I was five years old, my family went to see a circus in the next biggest town. one of the aerial acrobats ended up falling and breaking her neck. we were sitting in the front row. my mother is a doctor, and was the one that ran to help her. unfortunately, she died at the hospital that day. my sibling was the last person to ever get her autograph and picture with her. i’m so scared of circuses to this day

Fun fact: You know the fire that took place in Hartford CT? The one where they waterproofed the tent with wax and Gasoline? At 53:00? I work at the school that was built on top of it. There’s a memorial in the back. Many ghost sightings 👀
There is an awesome book about it, "Circus Fire". So scary.
@Nash Oli what school?!? I was born in Hartford and still live in CT.
I live in ct too I know that school
Unsurprisingly. Thanks for sharing.
So fascinating! Thank you for sharing
I'd love to see more dark history but on different cultures from around the world 🌍
I think the hard part is if she does, people could say dumb things like "it's not your culture/religion/country, you don't know anything " or that it can be difficult to truly know other cultures without delving into them personally because all cultures have their silence the truth quota
Agreed
Imagine if 'The Greatest Showman' was true to history lol doubt it would have been so loved!
They got the part where Barnum was a con man correct.
i was thinking of this the entire time...
Yeah I recently looked into it out of curiosity & was shocked 😳
The movie sure did make him out to be a hero! And the way it portrayed the “curiosities” and how they were treated in the movie is awful compared to the truth! It WAS one of my favorite movies, but now I’m just disgusted! Greatest Showman, my a$$!
Love this....
Everyone used to joke "what are you going to run away and join the Circus?" It was no joke in my family - my grandfather ran off and joined the Circus and his family never saw him again - he died in the 60s in Dade Co., Florida, where Ringling Brothers was headquartered.
You always tell great stories!
That's really cool! Did any family members follow in his foot steps?

My grandparents took us as kids to the huge Barnum and Bailey's 3 ring circus and we were mezmerized. This would've been back in the 70's before the negative info came out about circuses, but with child eyes, it was fascinating. My mom also trained as one of those ladies who spun from her neck on a suspended rope. There is a Circus World Museum in Wisconsin that she is in pics somewhere. Knowing what I know now, it makes those memories sad, though my grandparents never had any ill intent. At least we are becoming better with knowledge and learning.
Same here! I used to love going to the circus and seeing the horses and animals but knowing what I know now just makes those memories a bit sad

I'm scared to listen to this because I know how horrific the circus treats it's animals, especially the exotics. My heart can't bare hearing about this abuse.
Don’t worry. Most anti-circus propaganda is exaggerated.
@@scoutz0rs No it's not. Lol What pro-circus propaganda are you gaslighting everyone with? Lol

I love your comment section!! It is always so uplifting and positive!!! 💗💗
I love history. There are always darker stories. I grew up working for modern day carnivals. So of course I eat up all history I can find on it.
My first touch of knowledge about the darkness of the circus came from Me reading Water for Elephants. This Dark History episode just lined everything up perfectly and made it all more clear. I love watching your videos they are so jam packed with knowledge and comedy so thank you for bringing a smile to my face and some further awareness about our past as a country.
