I think the game is metaphor for life. The final words we see are "Welcome to Avalon" just before we file out of the theatre. Murphy wins the game through transcendence - Ash loses the game by killing the final boss and resetting it. Everything starts over.

I must admit I absolutely adore this movie. It's breathtakingly beautiful! There is just one thing that bothers me - the subtitles. Are they the official version or some fan-made stuff? Beacuse they are kinda poor. I mean, in the conversation between Ash and Murphy, not even one sentence was translated properly - the meaning was basicly the same, but in general... way too different.
I don't know if someone already replied you, but I think this is just a simulation. The Bishop says it's a very heavy simulation called Class Real, but it's a simulation that Murphy chose to think it's his reality, but it's not - he's locked inside it, but in reality he's inside that mental hospital. That's reality, in my opinion... and people try to seek for alternative worlds in virtual reality in games such as Avalon, where Class Real is another layer, a VIP layer for Class A players.

The entire move has truly fantastic cinematography throughout but the final part of the film it get's ratcheted up to eleven.
