One of the greatest strengths of digital mixers is the ability to save and recall settings. No place benefits more from this than a theatre show.
If you have time to prepare beforehand then taking the time to properly set up the scenes in your mixer eliminates so much uncertainty from the performance. You''ll mix a better show and enjoy yourself more while you do it.
In this video, I'll show you how to set up a QL1 digital mixer and save the scenes so that you can simply step through the cues on the mixer and, spend more time enjoying the show.

I"m going to have to do this on my next show, as I'm running 19 mics and I only have 16 faders at hand (same mixer you're demonstrating with). Normally, if I have all the channels and faders at hand, what I do is called "Line Mixing" - I will literally turn each mic on and off with the faders with each line of dialogue or each phrase sung. I try to keep mics off anytime they're not used. It provides for more gain before feedback and helps to eliminate comb filtering or bad echoes if the actors are close together or talking/singing face to face.

This was very helpful, thank you. We’re opening a new theater with a production of Shrek that will have lots of mics and sound effects. Knowing how to do scenes, I can see how this will make the work flow much easier.

Getting ready to mix a play for the first time. Super nervous, but this was very helpful. Thank you!

I am so glad I found your videos.
I am doing my first live musical theatre and this video was so informative.
I have a quick question, how do you include other inputs that have been sound checked but on a different strip on say channel 20?
I am going into a baptism of fire and using a Yamaha CL5 mixing console

Hey, so glad it was helpful to you 😊 when building a custom fader layer you can include inputs and outputs from any layer you want. You could for example have input 1,4, and 20 beside each other. Just navigate to the input that you want to include and press select to include it. You can also include DCAs and outputs if you want or need. I hope that answered the question. Let me know if not.

Thank you so much for that, I will also be joining all the musicians to a single channel, obviously after I have set their individual Channels.
Once again thank you for putting every step into layman's terms as well.
Keep up the good work 👍

Thanks for the video! It was very helpful!
I am doing sound for "Annie" at my wife's school and what to program scenes.
She got a new Yamaha QL5 for the theatre and I have been looking for a tutorial on how to set it up.
There are 2 casts with 26 wireless mics for her show with some of the mics shared between characters.
I am planning on having separate show files for each cast.
Do you do anything with the Recall Safe feature when doing a show?

Glad it was helpful! That sounds like a good idea. I can't say I have anything I usually do with recall safes. I'd ensure that the main FOH EQ and any other PA were safe between scenes and shows. It might be an idea to have the band/ any backing music channels safe as well, if you make adjustments to that you don't want it to change between scenes and shows. Hope that helps!

How do you get your EQ to stay the same when pre-programming the script?
