I pray that you never have to remove these from Utube. I watched these as a young boy 60+ years ago & still come back to watch them again & again. God bless you for posting these. 🙏♥️🙏♥️🙏♥️ 🫡 🇺🇸
This should be mandatory viewing for 8th grade in public schools as a lesson of the sacrifice that was made by a prior generation that we now reap the benefits.
We used to watch this series on the old Black & White TV set in the mid-1950's. As boys, we did not comprehend the gravity of war yet. And, as young boys, we loved to watch things blow up. My parents and grandparents knew the repercussions of war and tried their best to provide us with the childhood they never had. As an American, I do not yet know what it's like to survive in a POW camp, how to deal with famine and disease such as typhus and malaria. For this I am grateful.
Funny, I used to love this show as a kid too, for the same reasons. Explosions! Excitement! Now when I watch war movies as an old man, I just feel sad.
Our Dad was in the Navy and served in WWII and Korea. We too watched this series in the mid fifties and it all seemed so glorious. Of course we had no idea what our Dad had seen, the friends that he lost and the sacrifices he made during the time that he served. I'm so glad to have found this series again. I'll have to tell my brother.
One of the greatest documentary series ever made and a stark reminder of the cost of war. First saw it when it came out, have collection as well. Richard Rodgers score the best ever written. Joe S
The 1st time i saw Victory at Sea was in 1989 while deployed overseas in the Navy. While we were at sea, my ship used to show these late in the evening on our shipboard TV's.
I remember this from my childhood, but I don't know if I ever saw the entire series. What I do remember is my Dad had a set of LP records (78s) that had the music for the entire series recorded by the NBC Orchestra.
If you watch the documentary about ADM Ernest King, you realize that his entire life and experiences prepared him for the monumental task confronting him and our Nation.
Note that these are about 26 1/2 minutes long, which allows for 3 1/2 minutes each half hour for commercials. The FCC now allows 8 minutes of commercial each half hour.
No commercials makes up for the loud music. especially for the programs that spend a couple minutes after each commercial break recapping what happened before the commercial break.
In retrospect we had a president who then focused on covering his rear for the greatest display of military unpreparedness in world history. I do not blame the Japanese. As USMC veteran, a software engineer at NASA and in the aerospace community - I strongly resent that much like 9-11-1001, we were caught with our shorts dropped and dribbling on ourselves. Think back to 9-11, and the 18-19 clowns who took out the towers and the planes...didn't even own a pair of shoes before the attack.
Whack a Dem Savoy, when on active duty in the USN, I served on a minesweeper (MSO-430). A North Atlantic crossing in a minesweeper, in rough seas, did get your attention.

not enough has been written about the important role that the United States Merchant marine part in the "war at sea" thousands died in the freezing waters of the North Atlantic as well as the murmanske runs to Russia.
Well WE did not invade North Korea. The Commies Invaded South Korea, our Ally. This was filmed during the Korean War. Which never ended. A Cease Fire. Soon to be broken Again I am afraid.
GEZZA1 Millions of Americans had just fought in this war and the Nation had armed them. Docs like this where a great help to those who survived all this by attempting to display to them and the world exactly what they had accomplished.

Father Time Hey asshole, do you know what the first symptom of fascism is? Its nationalism. I get that when it comes to Trump you're Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuehrer, but I got news for you pal, if you think the World War II generation was fighting so capitalism can be restored then you don't know your history. The GI Generation was the first generation to fight for organized labor, high wages, and feminism. Fact! Fact! The grandchildren of the men who fought at Normandy, WE ARE NOT BOWING DOWN TO CAPITALISM! Cubete?
If you're looking for "just the facts ma'm" the music can be a bit much, though for most it's one of the highlights of this series. Try the Battlefield series for a more fact oriented series with less musical presence ruclips.net/video/wbKYbLUkIpk/видео.html

Thank you for posting this. My grandfather and I would watch this series together all of the time.
A superb series, raw footage sewn together in a wonderful panoramic with great music.
One of my favorite history shows.
Music by Richard Rodgers. Best film score ever.
Love the show....love the memories of seeing it for the first time. viewed in San Diego, California, by a Vietnam vet
As a young kid home from s hool in 1953 i found the series, the war was close memory to m any.i remember thats the
year my folks bought a tv

OMG! Yes....my parents had the record set too..."Victory at Sea" - as a kid didn't know it was related to the documentary until later.
So great to finally see this in it's entirety. Thanks for uploading!
"Sometimes it's not enough to do our best, we must do what is required." Winston Churchill
remember that war is sometimes necessary; but war can be and is like HELL
Sure wish todays politicians had this philosophy.

It used to be 30 s every 15 min
There are shows? I thought it was hours of commercials intermixed with the sporadic propaganda.
That would be Fox where they work to scare you into buying the gold their advertisers push.

2:40) Why I tend to oppose hard-line environmentalists. This is why I found this documentary on RUclips.
The stuff is filled with useful chemicals, even if it didn't contain any gasoline (and it does), we would still drill for oil.
curious
In case anyone is curious, alot of the scenes in this one came from a movie called "Action in the North Atlantic" starring Humphrey Bogart.
It is more likely that the Bogart movie used some of the documentary footage.
@@SteveHarlow the Bogart movie was made in 1943. It's Based on a US Merchant Marine tanker sunk by a U-boat in the North Atlantic and the survival of crew on life rrafts for 11 days before rescue and set out on a new ship which also battles a U-boat
thank you
I think the footage of the burning tanker was taken from U-123.
A lot of footage is from movies. In light of history, code-breaking etc. makes the series dated but still interesting.
@ 7;32 I am thinking the German would just not be saying over his loudspeaker in English "prepare to surface "
The accent is German, though😀

It may seem that the victors write history and the vanquished have only to deny it, the bit part players disparage it.

I guess that Army's answer to this series was "The Big Picture"
Bill B I believe so. Also there was another Navy show, called *Navy Log* IIRC.
And the Silent Service.
Thanks for reminding me of *The Silent Service*!

Bottom line the Germans got a beat down.
this show was dated 1952. Were they for P.R. for continuing support for USN and war generally??

They did. By the end of the war we had developed homing torpedoes. The DE launched them and they self guided to the sub and hit it.
Roosevelt got the war he wanted.

To say nothing of the brilliant orchestrations and conducting of Robert Russell Bennett!!
