The other way around, arepas are like Mexican gorditas. Arepas and gorditas are corn based. Mexico domesticated corn 10,000 years ago and created the Nixtamalization process to extract nutrients from the hard kernels of the cob. Most all corn based foods from other Latin countries come from Mexican influence.
