  • David and Edwin discuss their experiences with the old Keysi Fighting Method as well as with Defence Lab and Keysi Fighting Method under Justo. Edwin got his brown belt in KFM before they split, and David has since gotten his black belt in Defence Lab.
    www.lycandefensive.com
    Lycan is a philosophy for life every bit as much as it is a place to train self defense.
    David has spent more than 30 years in and around the martial arts industry. Starting with more traditional martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Goju-ryu karate and classical (Japanese) Jiu Jitsu, David has since expanded into various other systems along the way. He has trained extensively in Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, Israeli Krav Maga, various systems of Filipino Martial Arts such as Kali, old Keysi Fighting Method, and Defence Lab fight science.
    David has also spent a considerable amount of time in teaching several of these systems. It is his belief that we all have the potential to not only have the means and skill to defend ourselves in dire circumstances, but that we should also use our training as a channel to better improve our everyday lives. David considers himself a lifetime student, and while he may be teaching, he is always learning and trying to improve.

    The purpose of fighting styles is to use the things that help your game, and disregard what does not, but the fact that you have to be like water.

    I am an MMA and boxing practitioner and everytime i sparred multiple opponents just for fun and self defense ai actually used some concepts of Keysi a modified version of the pensador and some hammerfists to hit the guys that come from the sides when i fail, to circle out i use the pensador guard, and hammer fista in an agressive way and it really works wel, but not using only keysi when i spar multiple opponents, keysi is a transitional thing for me when fighting multiple opponents not my go to, but it works

    You mentioned old Keysi fighting method several times, is there a deference in what they are doing now?

    • @lycandefensive
      @lycandefensive  8 месяцев назад +7

      There is. The newer branch of Keysi is a bit more simplified overall. And I don't mean simple in a negative connotation. You get really good at what you're doing because the basics are always there.
      Defence Lab went into the opposite direction, where it's focus is testing and training every aspect and energy of everything they do. They give you a basic set curriculum which is based on a 4 year progression to black, but they also have a ton of training material that takes you a bit out of the box.

    I can get what is being said about the Keysi Fighting Method, but the thing I found awkward about it was that the strikes were not as powerful than if they were delivered from different positions. I can get the rational of the style but I would rather train to give more powerful strikes.

    Are KFM and Defence Lab moves more Gross Motor movement type or Fine Motor mevement type ???

    • @lycandefensive
      @lycandefensive  8 месяцев назад +7

      A majority of the movements are gross motor. There are some fine motor techniques, but there aren't a whole lot. They're fun to train for sure, but the emphasis of both systems is on shielding and smashing. They deliver this emphasis very well, I'm my humble opinion.

      @BogalaSawundiris I would say that it definitely depends on the situation as nothing works all of the time every time. However, when executed properly it can not only give you space but also cause a lot of pain to the opponent.

      You see THAT argument right there. Everyone runs to "oh go against someone who knows this, someone who knows that", do you know the odds of running into a trained fighter in the wild? YES I understand that over the years Martial Arts have become more popular and more people are training it, but the chances of you running into someone who know what they are doing is low. Keysi is made for SELF DEFENSE, in a self defense scenario, you dont try to fight someone, you try your hardest to get out of the situation and get away. YES if you buck up to a trained fighter with keysi and act cocky you more thank likely will lose, but if you try and walk away and make it seem like you know nothing and are a coward, you have the element of surprise when they throw a punch at you and they catch their knuckles on your elbows, or if they grab you to intimidate you and your elbow meets their chest, shoulder, or face. In kickboxing class, I surprised alot of people by blocking with the pensador then exploding forward with an elbow (not hitting them, just showing what I could do) and they were frozen because they weren't used to it and it caught them off guard. And btw BBJ is a great SPORT and great for 1 on 1 altercations. Go try to arm bar someone or choke them out with their friends there and see how quick you get kicked in the head or stabbed. @@frosty_soda

      I both agree and disagree. Fighting for the sake of is NOT self defense, you are correct. But some people forget that, in the midst of defending yourself, you might have to fight to get to safety. So it's good to have a skill set to call upon.
