@@aa-uq1qj that's the whole problem with Rome II though. The units don't actually behave like solid bodies (although it's slightly better than before). If you're gonna complain about units actually staying in formation properly, play Rome, Medieval II or even 3K.

There was one animation that lasted for like 30 seconds when I was fighting in Egypt, and it was a soldier dying and performing some sort of ritual before death. I was shocked at the attention to detail.

Its hated both because of its horrible release and because it dumbed down everything massively compared to its predecessors which became a trend that every subsequent TW followed.
That's why you need cavalry to quickly come to cover the flanks of your phalanxes. They're very effective when properly supported but without the aid, their lack of maneuverability becomes their downfall.

Though I would add Wellington is extremley highly regarded in military history circles and I think top 20 is a bit low. Though these discussions are also biased by some time periods involve more opportunity to fight battles and have better documentation of actual battlefield tactics and napoleonic era had a shit load of battles and witnesses.
Shogun 2 also had some great combat animations. Everyone fighting 1v1 did look a bit silly, and it meant that you could lock down high-level units with low level ones pretty easily, but it’s such a step up from what the fighting in Warhammer looks like.
I started with Medieval 2, but just played the LOTR Mod (Im a huge Lord of the rings fan xD) After a year i buyed Shogun 2 and Startet Campaigning. After 300 Hours i Buyed Rome to and it is by Far my most Loved TTW Game since the Realism, its authenthic, it doesnt look to Cartoonish like troy for expample and the Time Period is just my Favourite out of History. I also understand the Community is Craving for Medieval 3 but im really really Craving for Rome 3 xD On the other Hand im scared that Rome 3 will be a flop because they may pic to many bad things from TTW Warhammer or Troy. But i still got hope and would buy it. But nice to see that im not the only one whos Favourite is Rome 2 :3 (i know you said one of your favourites, but you know what i mean xD)

I used to whittle them down with projectiles before going in. Eg. stand right in front of them with a first cohort type units and fucking PELT them with javelins till depletion and then go in, usually they broke in 2-3 volleys cause they don't really have good defensive stats.

The Spartans would not relent, and demanded their surrender, and for 1 and 12 men to be submitted to become slaves. Such demands could not be reconcilded, battle was inevitable. The following day the Thracians charged the Spartans in a desperate breakout attempt. The Spartans let their mercenary archers have their way with them. Those few Thracians that where not riddled with arrows where cut down by Spartans. By mid day the river had turned red, and the Spartans advanced into the Thracian camp. None survived.
I miss when Total War games had sync animations and deaths.. felt brutally more realistic than Troy or Warhammer where they justo attack the air and fly away when they die
AI was always so foolish in total war. They would always charge across the stream or a bridge when on an attack, and be slaughtered. I only had problems with Mongols, and well all other horse archers with heavy cavalry, because they also had trebuchets and didnt charge like fools, they shot at you first and then charged, suffering minimal losses and causing much more with their arrows, even when fighting against heavy infantry. They broke my defences many times even as i held the supposedly unbreakable defensive positions. Maybe even in open field i would have more chance - although i doubt it. They were breakable in sieges only, where you could exploit their lack of infantry
This was my first total war. I used to play Macedon, and near the end of fights i would spectate my general and body guards, and just survey the battle and losses; it stuck with me for a long time

Indeed you do not. I just miss the days when defeating a faction in the campaign unlocked it rather than having to pay more money to flush out a game that was incomplete at release.

It’s one of the cliches of the game. You have a river crossing battle and you play as a phalanx or hoplite faction. You know you’re going to 9 times out of 10 win.

Anyone else disappointed in the animation quality of the new warhammer total wars? Like the scale is there, but the units only have a few animations and only like 2 death animations. It kinda destroys the immersion. Empire total war even did way better, and that’s why that one will always be my favorite
Total War 40k is their next entry being currently worked on. What do you all think about that? I for one think they are going to have to change the system making micro, cover, and garrisoning, almost like an RTS hybrid the main focus. Idk I just do not see how you balance the insane ranged firepower while keeping Melee infantry effective, while also fking Sending It! With Artillery which is gonna be awesome.
