She left me for another man and laughed at me about my situation. I had some good friends but they were perplexed by my choices and although they were sweet and supportive, they keep their distance since that time. I got out of the psych ward and went to work. I wanted to attempt the act again but a coworker saw me (I had lost a lot of weight). She called my name and informed me that I wasn’t looking too good. She was older, almost like a Mother figure. She told me “Don’t you do anything stupid to yourself” - I went into the bathroom and cried like a baby. Point being - SOMEONE cared, someone that didn’t know me well. I was so touched. I always thought that the church disapproved of suicide because: well, life sucked back then....dead people went to heaven (which would be better, right ?)...serfs needed to stay alive to slave away for the church etc.
I've heard that suicide was originally specified as it's own mortal sin in the 5th or 6th century by a Synod because a lot of Christians were killing themselves to enter Heaven early.
yeah, but its also said that there is a soul and an afterlife by those who want ten percent of your income to tell you about their invisible friend. So take it with a grain of salt. @@_Minos
In the game Outer Worlds, suicide is considered a crime because it's "Irreparable damage to company property". It's played for shock humor. I'm surprised it's actually a historical fact.
Do people think that? I mean "falling on your sword" is an idiom that dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, even back in the Iron age people were known to commit suicide to get forgiveness for failures and preserve their honor from Rome to China, and tons of mythology from vampires to ghouls to evil ghosts are occasionally claimed to be caused by people who committed suicide
It may seem preposterous but some people do think suicide is a recent phenomenon. I knew a guy who'd say that people kill themselves nowadays because we're not a "god-fearing society" anymore and that people didn't kill themselves in the past because the church ruled society or something like that... Needless to say, he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Studying or reading in general was not his thing. So yeah who knows, maybe people like the aforementioned guy are watching this video too and learning something new lol
@@JohnDarksoul69 I've heard 2 camps on that thought: 1. That suicide really was less common since people were genuinely afraid of what the afterlife had in store for them, although that also depends on your definition of suicide since people who were miserable or seriously mentally ill may just drink themselves to death or something like that. It also wasnt unheard of for people to do thinks like stake out a spot and challenge any passing knight, soldier, or other armed person to a duel to the death. That or they could just easily sign up for a crusade or war and die that way. Sometimes people would also just go into the woods to die by wild animals, some knights, vikings, or other warriors would just go find a bear to fight in single combat in order to die with honor. People also sometimes worked around the suicide "rule" by just getting someone else to kill them since that person could then just ask for forgiveness. 2. Suicide was more common then we think because people would just cover it up. Even outside of religion there were tons of myths surrounding suicide that the person would come back as a vampire, haunt people as a ghost, come back as a ghoul, or just bring bad luck to everyone. It was also sometimes considered a dishonor for the family or even that persons lord since people may blame them for not preventing it or for making that person miserable. That all meant that people were incentivized to pass off a suicide as something else. Aside from those 2 points theres also the issue that until fairly recently suicide was much more taboo so people didnt discuss it much and even in things like newspapers it may be ignored or even covered up. Even today people may not say a family member or friend killed themselves but simply say they died without going into too many details or pass it off as something else. I know 2 people who killed themselves where the family usually doesnt say that, both people were terminally ill (AIDs and cancer) and killed themselves when they were getting close to death anyways so they usually just list those as the cause of death.
I really liked the opening to Kingdom of Heaven showing the burying of the woman that had committed suicide at a crossroad and cutting off her head. Medieval practices would be so alien to us and I appreciate any attempt to show that in big budget films. Too often films set in medieval times bring in contemporary moralities and practices where they don't belong.
they did the to prevent her from becoming a vampire because they believed that people who died by suicide are going to turn into bloodsucking fiends :P
Ahhh, so it's been the same pattern throughout time. Men and women attempt at roughly the same rate (or women slightly more like nowadays), but due to methods chosen (hanging/stabbing/gunshot VS poison/cutting wrists), men succeed more often. Which can then skew data. Interesting. Thank you for covering this serious topic! And for your message at the beginning! ❤
Well done. I’ve seen a few videos where this topic is mentioned and a message like at the beginning isn’t mentioned. Thanks for showing a caring attitude kind sir!
Ask yourself, - 'Why is it, - that I feel so pressed inside, to convince that certain someone that they indeed have got something to live for'. What is it exactly, what is it - truly, that is genuinely motivating you to talk-them- out-of-it ? Well, because ... What ? Are there more reasons not to 'exit', or are there more reasons to indeed exit ? Is there 'anything' selfish in committing it, or, are there more selfish reasons to denounce, deny, or condemn it ? Be very careful here. Why are the most fundamental of questions the most difficult ? Is your view the right one ? Or the only one ? Is another view wrong ? Or can another view simply be different. If you forgive another view, how do you justify that in your mind, how about in your heart ? Just what is it that makes some things so irreconcilable ?
We can't know for sure, as most suicides would have likely been falsely reported as other causes of death. This would be done in order to avoid stigma and to have a proper burial by the Church.
all hotlines, message boards and samaritan programs are useless. all they do is serve as a reminder of how alone and pointless this life truly is that id need to call a stranger just to hear someone pretend to give a shit ab me
Yes, they're an enormous joke, hotlines in particular. I've heard stories of people being put on hold for unbelievable lengths of time just to be hung up on. Other stories where the operator clearly doesn't care or is dismissive. Doesn't help if you say a few magic words, they'll send the cops to your residence, arrest you, and put you in psychiatric hold where you are completely dehumanized. The joke? Several thousand dollars for a few nights of garbage food, dehumanizing staff, and doing "activities" kindergarteners would find lame. Most people won't and don't get how bad things really are until put into such a circumstance. "Nobody cares." Takes a whole different meaning when nobody actually cares at all about you. Nobody.
Thank you for this. If anyone's very interested in Medieval spirituality and violence I hotly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series (I think he has a playlist on the topic proper)
Everything is relative. Yeh, looking back, compared to modern times, life in the medieval ages wouldve been miserable for a majority of the population. However, people back them were familiar.with a very different world, with very different dynamics. To a modern man, it seems miserable to toil in a field, or break your back building various stone structures, all day, every day, only to come home to a watery root soup with old horse meat (if ur lucky). But this is all those people knew, this was life for them. Can you imagine the joy they might feel for a sweet summer rain that cooled them down and refreshed the world? Or how awesome it felt to relax in a picturesque field of flowers after a long, productive day of hard work with their lover in their arms, listening to the laughing and shouting of their kids as they played games, watching a beautiful sunset, breathing in the kind of fresh, clean evening air that modern man cant even fathom? Despite what appears to be a miserable life relative to a modern man's experience, the people back then had a lot to enjoy and be thankful for, their lives could easily feel like miraculous gifts to them. So yeh, it might seem like nothing but misery from a modern perspective, but that doesn't mean people back then couldnt find enchantment and beauty in life, and experience fulfillment and satisfaction with life that can easily be lost on modern men.
Thank you for the intro speech and for the video itself. However, I live in America and no one here truly cares if you live or die. I have tried to access mental health and have been blown off by several doctors. It is so heartbreaking. I am crushed and don't know what to do anymore.
@rachelnesbitt8126 it really touches me that you would ask. Thank you for caring. Honestly, I've been really bad lately with the holidays and everything. I'm having really dark thoughts. It's a struggle just to get out of bed. My family thinks I can just "stop it." There's only one way I know of to completely stop it. I just want the nightmare to end. I'm not making active plans of ending it...but i would be lying if I didn't say that I don't think about going away several times a day.
@Katy_Bug89 Thanks for replying 🫶 Oh sweetheart. I'm so sorry you are going through all this horror in your own brain, especially in America- not the greatest place to be for mental health is it? 💓 Let's start from the ground up, slowly, with help- and one day at a time. You may need medication now at this point, I'm not sure. Luckily- we can do some things together without any doctors. First thing is first, how is your eating and drinking? If we can get the right amount of fuel in your body we stand a chance if fighting this thing. I will keep checking back here 💓 Katy, you have a friend. My name is Rachel and I want to help you through this. One step at a time.
@rachelnesbitt8126 Thank you, Rachel. You have no idea how much this means to me. I can't stop crying after reading your comment. I genuinely don't have any friends. I don't don't go out unless i absolutely have to. I stay in bed roughly 18 hours a day...no joke. I am so ashamed of myself. My eating and drinking are not great. I'm literally like a little gremlin sneaking into the kitchen and grabbing something fast so that I don't encounter any of my family members. It's usually like a quick sandwich or toast or something of that nature. I know I I don't drink enough either. I feel like a pitiful excuse for a human being. Again, thank you so much for caring enough to reply and talk. It truly means the world to me.
I saw this so I clicked on it. In no way do I want to commit suicide, I was just curious about this. Anything that says “Middle Ages” I normally instantly click. And I instantly clicked this video.

I imagine a person would have had to experience seriously tremendous emotional pain in order for them to want to take their own life in thise days. It probably wasn't very common except in exceptional circumstances like war or the threat of torture. In the 21st century we look at mental health and unaliving ideations through a lense of compassion and understanding. Centuries ago there would have been literally zero support system or safety net in place for people struggling with mental health issues. Of course they didn't understand what we do now about mental health and illness, so a person experiencing struggles would have had the double whammy of not only having everyone around them hate them, but also themselves likely believing they're either possessed or being punished for past sins. Either way, it was a sign from God that you were worthy of being punished for something of your own doing. You'd be lucky if you had a compassionate relative to seek comfort in, maybe a sibling or parent. Imagine being well and truly THAT alone in the world.
Hmm. Medieval person tired of life, takes self out. Modern person tired of life, takes self and innocent victim, it would seem. I survived the murderee part of a murder-suicide, and am continually let down by how little anybody wants to a knowledge the murderous aspect of suicide.
@@gracebres Suicide is not a mental illness. In my case, the person was passed over for promotion. He acted with complete deliberation and planning. Had he not flinched at the last possible instant, I would not be on line now.

I appreciate that you have bills to pay but it took over 3 minutes for the video to start, surely you must see that it is damaging your viewer retention and in the long term will do more harm than good.
Wow! I don't like the crap that goes on these days, but I'm darn glad I didn't live during medieval times! It's like your life wasn't your own. Oh, yes, it belonged to a king. UGH!!
Seems to me these people did it to get away from them(authorities) Afterwards all they were interested in was whatever money the person had, and to impose their will on the people.I think even in these times people knew that.
The reason why they made suicide a sin, was to prevent people from killing themselves as cheat code to heaven. “Man, I can’t wait to see God, so I’m just going to hang myself and go to heaven and be there instead. Bye guys!”

In the game Outer Worlds, suicide is considered a crime because it's "Irreparable damage to company property". It's played for shock humor.
I'm surprised it's actually a historical fact.
I lost my mother to suicide when I was 11yo i appreciate how you started this video good on you sir❤
He started by saying it was the most evil thing you can do.
Thank you for pointing out that self terminating is not a recent phenomenon. 😐
@@arthas640I think as long as there's been human beings there's been people killing themselves off.
@@JohnDarksoul69 I've heard 2 camps on that thought:
@arthas640 thank you for that read 🫶
I really like how you opened this video, with such compassion. God bless.
One has to wonder if sui is even the real intent in those cases given the methods chosen.
Men are far more likely to commit suicide than women in modern times. Check your sources, friend.
@@user-ic9vz8sp1xi mean intaking poison shows that thats definitely the intent 💀

Well done. I’ve seen a few videos where this topic is mentioned and a message like at the beginning isn’t mentioned. Thanks for showing a caring attitude kind sir!
Sometimes people only care after you're dead.
I like what principles I've seen come through in your channel to compliment the interesting history! Thanks for providing such content
Well said.
Ask yourself, - 'Why is it, - that I feel so pressed inside, to convince that certain someone that they indeed have got something to live for'. What is it exactly, what is it - truly, that is genuinely motivating you to talk-them-
out-of-it ? Well, because ... What ?
Are there more reasons not to 'exit', or are there more reasons to indeed exit ?
Is there 'anything' selfish in committing it, or, are there more selfish reasons to denounce, deny, or condemn it ? Be very careful here.
Why are the most fundamental of questions the most difficult ?
Is your view the right one ? Or the only one ? Is another view wrong ? Or can another view simply be different. If you forgive another view, how do you justify that in your mind, how about in your heart ? Just what is it that makes some things so irreconcilable ?
Interesting, I always wondered how common a self-termination would be in the Middle Ages due to the church's opposition to such a practice.
We can't know for sure, as most suicides would have likely been falsely reported as other causes of death. This would be done in order to avoid stigma and to have a proper burial by the Church.
So.....life is difficult. "He's a Warlock!! She's a witch!!!!" Sounds to me like the oldest known human condition - I.e. - blame.

all hotlines, message boards and samaritan programs are useless. all they do is serve as a reminder of how alone and pointless this life truly is that id need to call a stranger just to hear someone pretend to give a shit ab me
Yes, they're an enormous joke, hotlines in particular.
"Nobody cares."
Takes a whole different meaning when nobody actually cares at all about you. Nobody.
Thank you for this. If anyone's very interested in Medieval spirituality and violence I hotly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series (I think he has a playlist on the topic proper)
I love the music for your videos! It seems to be what I imagine medieval music to sound like.

@Lo.Lo.B Good question. I'm wondering the same 💯
If I had lived in the medieval ages I probably would have killed myself too. Life back then was so miserable

Hey Katy, that comment was 3 months ago, how you doing? 🫶
Let's start from the ground up, slowly, with help- and one day at a time.
My grandmother still thinks this way and no amount of Mental Health help her she is dead set against it and she is a manic depressant I can't even imagine living in the Middle Ages many of your friends are dying every day because of the plague or being accused of something it has to be a crazy time and you know maybe you're going to be next could make you think twice this is a good video thank you very much and thanks for the resources❤

Criminalizing the mentally ill doesn't help anyone.
@@gracebres Suicide is not a mental illness. In my case, the person was passed over for promotion. He acted with complete deliberation and planning. Had he not flinched at the last possible instant, I would not be on line now.

Bye guys!”
