The second part of a two-part video in which I take you through my process from start to finish and share with you what I'm thinking about as I finish it. I watched the 2-part Monument Valley painting video some time ago and stumbled on it again today. I was awed by my first viewing and watched it again. Honestly, this painting is breathtaking! The glow of the color, the depth and transitions and the complete understanding of confidence in painting horses in myriad postures. Absolutely beautiful. And on top of that, your videos are fun.

    I found an earlier iteration of this painting online almost a 10 years ago and loved it! I spent months learning and emulating the style and gave the finished product to my parents for Christmas. It was surreal watching you paint it again, even after so long, the shapes and colors are so familiar. You have heavily influenced my own painting style and I'm so excited that I found your youtube channel!!

      Welcome aboard Michael! Thanks for subbing, I really do appreciate that you find value in my vids. If you're a sculptor then you have what you need to make the transition (think John Coleman)! I'm the same way with listening to 70's classic rock as you are with 80's. Can't get enough when the mood is right. Then there's Sinatra and the American Standards and big band... dang, it's all so good! Well, most music is good (don't get me started, ha). Don't know Two Steps from Hell, hafta check 'em out... thanks! S.

      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  4 года назад +1

      Cool, thanks Duana! Liquin has been such a great tool to have. Don't know how I got along without it, though I do lots of paintings just using paint and no Liquin, but it's nice to have it when you need it. I've also started using Liquin Impasto that allows me to get those thick juicy paint strokes that don't flatten out.

    • @DuanaBennett
      @DuanaBennett 4 года назад +1

      I'm almost sure I saw a moment in one of your videos where you mixed Liquin and Gamsol to rework an area in a painting. Now I can't find it again. What ratio do you mix them? Thanks.

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  4 года назад +1

      @@DuanaBennett Hey Duana, if I'm reworking a dry area of a painting, I brush on pure Liquin, no Gamsol. If I'm sealing a drawing to keep it from smudging when I apply paint, I mix in about 10%-20
      % Gamsol into my Liquin to help it to flow better and put down a very thin layer.

    Hi Steve.... nice to have you back. Another beautiful piece completed. One thing I've noticed about you, you paint like a painter, building up layers on the canvas, from dark to light. Traditionally when I worked with an airbrush it would have been done in the complete opposite, as I would use the white of the paper as my lights and would work from light to dark, only issue being, if a mistake was made it was more difficult to correct. Painting the way you do, as most painters do, I would imagine that you could remove, correct or do pretty much anything with a painting as long as you could continue to layer paint as much as you wanted to. I'm no expert, that's for sure, it's just that I've never painted the way you do and never used oils or opaque colors except to add highlights in the end. And I've noticed with this painting that the style seems more impressionistic than realistic, up close anyway.... stepping farther back seems to blend that impressionism into reality. One thing we definitely have in common is that we both listen to classical when we work....nothing like it to get the creative juices flowing. Another issue that I always had in my work was the use of colors. Sure, everything looked nice in the end, but I never really captured the mood or emotion as you do in your paintings. A lot to be learned yet, just not enough time left to do it all. Stay safe my friend, always looking forward to your next video.

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  4 года назад +1

      Hi John, it's always great to hear from you and your very thoughtful comments. Yes, oil paint can be one of the most forgiving mediums, as compared to watercolor that works like you do when airbrushing. Light to dark. So oils are never done until you say it is... or give up! I know you're incredibly dedicated and will just keep getting better. Until then, keep that music playing and we'll keep in touch. Paint on!!

    De très belles toiles sur votre chaîne,le problème est d'obtenir le ''dessin préparatoire '' parfait,au début d'une réalisation ; beaucoup se servent de calques divers ou d'une projection vidéo,etc... Est-ce encore de l'art?.

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  4 года назад

      No projection here. I do a preparatory drawing to get all the drawing problems worked out and then have a copy made to the correct size and transfer down the drawing and seal it. That way I can concentrate on painting and not having to fix any drawing problems.

  • @borealiswan2363

    Some artists paint from dark to light, others from light to dark. And I'm not referring to wc or any medium other than oils. I wonder what informs your choice. The only advantage I can see for light to dark is longevity as oil paint darkens with age, and if you have dark underlayers they might show through after a number of years. Is there any particular reason you chose this procedure ? Thanks for inviting us along this demo ! Stunning result !!
    Oh, as for music, I used to listen to some classical, Pink Martinis, and Ray Lamontagne, a favourite. I grew tired of always looking for original music as I held live model groups for 12 years. Now I listen to scary and mysterious stories, they keep me on the edge of my seat, in problem solving mode.

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  4 года назад +1

      Hi Art Life, good question. When painting in oils it's always dark to light. The reason for that is because you should paint with thin layers to start and finish up with thick layers of paint. The reason being that thin layers dry faster than thick layers and will be less likely to crack over time. If you paint thin over thick you will get cracking eventually, though some of this can be mitigated slightly by using a medium such as Liquin since it aids in drying time. Hope that helps!

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  Год назад +1

      Thanks Jack! I mount most of my paintings on Baltic Birch plywood now, so I don't have this issue anymore. But, when I was stretching my canvases, sometimes I needed to tape my canvas to board first because it gives me more control and the ability to better detail the painting without the canvas bouncing on me as I paint. I stretched most of my paintings first, but I needed the extra control on this painting. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

      Hi Sean, sometimes I roll a painting after it's been to my galleries but not sold. If you do roll your canvas, make sure it's loosely rolled and not tightly done. You should be able to store it that way for years. It's more important that you store it in a temperature controlled environment (keep it in the house, not in the garage).
