Btw, if any of you are wondering why it never sounds right when you play it, it's because the guitar was originally double-tracked, and there were two parts at the same time.
Fairly certain they also put some kind of sponge or whatever at the bridge as to mute it. I suppose if you've got one of those original jaguars you've already got that built into your guitar.
I am an older guy that is that has some issues with my hands but is trying to get back to playing my guitar after a very long time of letting it sit in the corner of my room. Your videos have been a big inspiration and help to me. So a big thank you is deserved.
Very useful tip- In every chord shape, you can actually pick up your first finger and keep it in the air after playing it, kind of close the gap so that your pinky doesn't have to stretch so much, and when you come back up to play the heavier strings, lift your pinky up and allow yourself to stretch your first finger. There's no single point of time in this song where you'd need both your first and last finger on the board. Secondly, the major 6th can be played by lifting that first finger up and using it for that, and bring it up again, instead of using both first and second fingers.
Just to reinforce this comment. I'm not much more than beginner level and even with big hands, I find playing this with my fingers in static chord shapes to be close to impossible, and extremely uncomfortable. Lifting my fingers allowed me to progress from being unable to play it at all to playing it at full tempo without mistake (occasionally!) within a day. It's just a beautiful piece of music and even 2 days ago I thought it was completely beyond me.
I just wanna say thank you Marty for sticking around. Ive been watching your videos since 2014 maybe. I'd ask my dad to pick out videos from your channel so I can learn the songs I wanted. Sadly he passed in 2015. Your videos were the only way I was able to learn so quickly. And it helped me make my dad happy by playing some of his favorite songs. Thank you again :)
Every Breath You Take, Every Chord You Make, makes this song a Police classic to play. Thanks Marty you the greatest. This song takes some work to perfect but, you can achieve success with this song. By the way you broke it down in sections and your explanation. Which gives us comprehension on what you are doing without complications. ❤❤❤
sir, this brings tears to my eyes, because I never thought that I will come across your video after that years. I mean when I started to play guitar the very first lesson or video I've been watched was with you showing how to play funk. i was 11 years at that time now I'm 26 years old and I'm producer guitar player, bass player and also I'm playing keys. Amazing memory for me I never thought that I would really end as a musician on full time. Greetings from Belgium!
I love when you can find a song that does the work of a workout/warmup. This is my new stretch workout along with Beatles' "I Feel Fine" for the extra pinkie work.
@@MartyMusic hi, I love you videos and I was wondering if you could do a lesson on the Hotel California or Smoke on the water solos. I've seen your videos on how to play the songs but no solos.
Found a nice technique: move your index finger to the 4th string once played on the first string (you don’t need it for the rest of the rest of each chords’s arpeggio)
Marty, please post your Katana patches in the description if possible. It's always a pain to recreate tones, it'll make life a lot easier for us lazy folk.
This is the more authentic but harder way to play it. For those with less guitar dexterity, I recommend playing it in standard tuning with a capo at the 1st fret. Look for tutorials with a capo on the neck. The other thing I discovered while learning this is, I couldn't capture the feel of the part until I realized something -- in addition to the sequence of the notes and the tricky muting, the notes are played kind of staccato, matching the staccato bass line. You can achieve a certain amount of this with additional right-hand muting, like with the side of your thumb, but left-hand releasing of the notes as you play helps, too.
I play this song in a band and it’s very uncomfortable after a while. I now tune the guitar to open G and play it that way. It brings the notes closer together and means less stretching.
It’s really cool you take the time to help us learn exactly how to play it, but then you just need to play it for a little while because the instructions so choppy we’re not becoming fluent players
Dear Sir, you are an excellent teacher. We keep learning from your videos. Pl teach guitar lesson for the famous song ' Lady in Red ' by Chris De Berg. Thanks
Marty Marty! "Over Now" is my absolute favorite AIC song. I just recently started playing guitar, your videos have helped so much... I'm trying to learn the final sections of the song, especially the Outro, unfortunately I'm having a hell of a time finding a decent tutorial on this song. If u could help me out I'd love it, u rock Marty
For any new comers here I have pretty small hands, I am 5'0 haha so that's reference and it just takes a lot of practice. you find your own unique way of playing this song and that's even more fun. DONT GIVE UP!!
Request for a song breakdown. Corb Lund covered it on his songs friends wrote album. The original is Hayes Carl and the song is Little Rock.. I found original on guitar tabs, had to codify corb's version an was a bit harder to understand. Anyway seems kinda easy in theory. Chords and strumming. But one version could be done acoustic other electric. Either way there is some riff fill in's I can't figure out. Both versions are great songs.
Love this song. Thanks for the overview of it. I want to request a overview of a song (if you’re not too busy) that is near and dear to me: Unwell by Matchbox 20. Thanks again for the many guitar lessons over the years. Cheers 🥂!
Marty, I sanded my guitar neck down with 100 grit sand paper and I took those metal stopper things out of the neck. Are there any more preliminary steps I can take after I unbox a guitar? It’s a Squire and a redditor told me I needed a set up
This is one way to play it, definitely not how Summers plays it, the Chorus part is wrong on this, if you listen to his isolated guitar track on the multi track files, I played it wrong at first also, my playthrough / remix of the song will be coming soon.

Wasn't finding any motivation to play guitar today but here comes gigachad marty with a GREAT song

Love this Marty! Broken Bells is a great song for you to learn. Tell me when you get to it! 🙏
Bro we have the same name 👌. Super rare lol
Been waiting for this song! Thanks for the video!
A lot of people regard this as a love song, yet the lyrics are actually quite creepy and dark. 😎🎸🎸That is an iconic riff though.
Marty, you are the best. I find your lessons are the quickest way for me to learn a song.
Thank you so much !
At first this song was so irritating to play. But now so glad I can play it without difficulty. Thanks Marty.
Finally I’m glad I have long fingers
Dam. Those pinky stretches
Retune to a open G - it’s way easier
very melodious song lesson from you.i was waiting for this for a long time.thanks for it.🎵🎶🎵🎶
So nice of you
Finger stretching time! 😆
Thanks Marty. The stretching is very difficult.
I’ll start at the 12th fret and work down 😉🎸😎
Thank you Marty- would love to see more Beatles here 👍
You are a good teacher Marty but hearing this makes me remember why I got rid of my Katana amp.
There were parts this lesson that reminded me of "Always with you Always with me" by Satriani. That would be a great lesson.
The ultimate finger stretcher. Looking forward to approach to the F# minor before I even watch
I have small hands and I think I figured out a feasible way to play this

Can you make a tutorial on how to play pulling teeth by Green Day?
Tough for me to play but well worth it. Thanks for the lesson Marty.

Mr Marty man, could you please do a How To, 'Man on the Moon' by R.E.M? pleeease
Please could we have some Guns N Roses livestream analysis that you do every week?
Don’t forget the piece of sponge under the bridge to get the original AS sound instead of palm muting!
I haven’t tried yet but I already give up.
