- Reporter Dan Rather was able to see the Zapruder footage and later narrated the film to CBS national television coverage, claiming that he saw the President's head "went forward with considerable violence." He failed to mention the backward motion made famous in the Oliver Stone movie, JFK. His omission seemed to confirm that the single shooter theory with just Oswald firing from the rear. When the Zapruder film became public, he was forced to apologize saying it was "an honest error."

@@vernpascal1531 Same for the THROAT shot (not the back of the neck!), and the shot through the FRONT windshield, the shot that hit a curb, throwing a piece of it into James Tague face drawing blood, etc., etc., etc.! Very few people mention Tague as the THIRD person wounded (or killed) by the attack, so another shot had to be taken, destroying the nonsense of the "lone nut" single shooter on the 6th floor, SE corner. And the Z-film destroys the Oswald crap from a single viewing. No wonder the conspirators successfully hid the Z-film to show the public (only individual frames were previously published by Jan. 1964, with some critical frames reversed in the time order). Only after a copy was obtained by Geraldo Rivera's staff to show the public the whole 26-second film in Mar. 1975, on Rivera's late-night tv show, did a nation-wide audience finally see the violent, natural movement (to the rear) of his body, resulting in more people realizing it had to be a conspiracy from the frontal shots!

Rather apparently had a limited viewing of the film and was now going by memory. Comparing his recollection of what he saw with the actual Zapruder film demonstrates how memory of specific movements is imprecise, even for a news reporter. Bill and Gale Newman the couple on the grass with their children were interviewed on live TV less than 30 minutes after the shooting, parts of their description doesn't match the Zapruder film exactly. Bill Newman said the president lifted up in his seat, when the film shows that only Kennedy's arms raised up.
Frame by frame analysis shows that Kennedy's head initially snapped forward a small distance when the bullet struck, followed by the longer and slower rearward movement.
The forward movement is too brief to be noticed at regular playback speed, unlike the very visible rearward movement. Dan Rather therefore incorrectly remembered seeing the head move forward because he would not have been able to see the initial forward motion assuming he watched the film at full speed.
@@StevePemberton2 This is not some innocuous event that Rather was trying to recall. He was watching a video of the President of the United States being assassinated, something very few other people had access to. There is no possible way you could watch such a monumental video in the days (hours?) after the assassination and get something like that wrong. At no point in the video does the president move forward anywhere close to the degree Rather describes...the president's movement is of course in the opposite direction, and violently. Also, given the circumstances of Rather's eventual dismissal from CBS, he is not owed the benefit of the doubt.
Dan saw the film prior to getting on TV and Dan LIED. period.
He did not lie. He simply misinterpreted what he saw which was easy to do at this point when interviews weren’t conducted and released yet.

I believe that his CIA Handlers told him to say that JFK's head moved Forward because they believed they could Alter that in the film at the time but later it didn't work out for them because they just couldn't do it believably.

Rather was viewing the Zapruder footage on behalf of CBS who were bidding for the rights for the film. Considering how the film was kept from the public for years, how influential must have Rather's lie about Kennedy's head moving forward after the fatal head shot have been? His willingness to lie probably made his career & convinced people that Oswald was guilty.
He continued to lie 3 years later on the Whitewashed CBS special in 1967. Shame on CBS as well as the History Channel for continuing to lie for the Warren commission to this day .

I wonder how much he got for making most of this up. The thing I find interesting is that both he and Zapruder both state that he filmed the President making his turn onto Elm Street, proving the film he viewed was later altered and edited out. Have a look at what seems to be an irrelivant film by Elsie Dorman. She was filming from the TSBD as they came along Houston Street and turned onto Elm Street, she states she STOPPED filming because as she says in a interview "as soon as I heard shots I stopped filming" THIS WAS AT THE TURN ONTO ELM STREET not half way down.
@Christopher L Thanks for the info...I have spent years studying the assassination and Doug Horne's work is brilliant. I have also disgussed with someone who authenticated the 'Backyard' photos and you can prove it's not Oswald holding the rifle. Not sure if you know they found a bullet in JFK's skull but it was never made public knowledge and the bullet that hit Connally (the magic bullet) was still stuck in his thigh and not on the gurney. I have hundreds of details if interested.

Notice how after the initial shots he misdirects the story to focus on the Secret Service and Jackie. Would like to know if he ever got to talking about the headshot that blew his head backwards. How did he or, if he avoided it, how would he explain that one? A five year old could watch and tell you what direction the shot came from and it wasn't where out buddy Oswald was.
As well, Rather reports that SS was riding on back or car.

Sounds like the film he saw was MUCH clearer than what was shown us. He can see the secret service man on the phone? JFK brushed his hair back before the 1st shot? Jackie stood up and JFK leaned against her leg? I don't see any of that.

He never mentioned how Jackie positioned Jack's head for the final shot nor how the Connelys turned back towards the front as if jack was gaging in the backseat!

@Alrifr my point is if there was a government cover-up why let the Zapruder film be seen by anyone at all? Wouldn't it have made more sense to destroy it? I used to buy into the conspiracy theories. Read the books, watched the documentaries. But after a while they became more and more silly. The CIA killed Kennedy or was it the FBI? The Soviets did it or Castro or organized crime. Maybe a combination of any or all. People claim that George H W Bush was involved along with Woody Harrelson's father. Others say it was JFKs limo driver, or a tiny rocket launcher hidden in one of the seats or the Umbrella man launched a dart into Kennedy to paralyze him. My favorite was he was accidentally shot by a Secret Service who was trying to return fire at Oswald. As I said it's all pretty silly.
Rather was chosen because he was willing to play the game again, he was aggressive and a fraudster.
Also, Kennedy's head clearly thrown backwards from the final kill shot...from the front.

Interesting you mention that.there is a good book on the Z Film much better than the one by Z's Daughter, and that is by David Wrone. Officially, Rather couldn't have seen the film unless there was a 4th copy we don't know about.So we;ll just take his word for it when the film shows the opposite of what he says!

I think it's very interesting the level of detail that he got RIGHT, only to totally miss the direction of the president's head snap. That would seem to be very obvious as opposed to remembering the SS Agent in the front seat being on the phone.
Rather did not see this in person. He is speaking of the photos that he saw.
I saw z film many times and could not determine head going forward at all. He must have seen a different z film.

Some people see a very small, incremental movement forward *before* the violent whole body movement backwards. Those people explain the very small forward movement as a result of a bullet. More likely, consistent with the numerous witnesses seeing the brake lights flash, the limo was slowing down, thereby with the laws of motion, a person naturally moves forward. That was what happened if those people insist they see a forward motion, but easily explained by the limo slowing, even lower than the minimum 11mph the Secret Service rules required for its drivers, when by then the limo had already slowed below the 11mph, with some witnesses insisting the limo actually stopped. Only until after the fatal head shot to his front, right temple (just above the right eye), did driver William Greer hit the accelerator and go to the hospital.
An elementary school in Dallas announced to the children that school would get out early. The children were never told why, so they cheered.
Rather reported that when told JFK was assassinated the children cheered. Someone corrected him later on, but he never put it in the correct context.

In other places, he says he saw the film only once. There was a lot to comprehend quickly and he did his best.
NO PROOF that Oswald fired any shots
The Warren Report appendix includes the results of the paraffin test for nitrates conducted by the Dallas PD on Oswald’s cheeks the afternoon he was taken into custody. There were no nitrates. That proves he had not fired a rifle.
@@Cyallaire True but even after he tested negative for the paraffin test the Dallas chief of police was quoted saying “to my knowledge the test was positive”. And here you have another smoking gun proving a conspiracy within the investigation. He would have been charged with pergury if he would have said that to a grand jury. After most people heard this from the chief of police they never questioned the assassination again and they still reference the Warren report like it’s a non fiction story.

That is pretty bad - whoever you think was responsible how could he not describe the head going violently back - even if you thought it went forward first what everyone notices on first viewing is the back and to the left - whatever you thought caused it. He really seems to be covering it up.
I personally think that this was Mafiooz and only Mafiooz, but the one thing that occurred to me when I was in Dallas, was: if this was Oswald and only Oswald, why would he have not taken the dead on, direct shot to the face that he had when the car was on Houston?

You can tell this is somewhat scripted if not all of it. How would Dan rather be able to truthfully give details like he does when information is still fresh and stories all over the place.

Pretty vivid memory for only being allowed by Zapruder and his lawyer to view 1 time. Lots of detail. He either was able to watch it numerous times, or was given a script. He also fails to mention that he immediately left to go offer Zapruder $10,000 for the film, but while he was spewing this on air, Life magazine was purchasing the film from Zapruder. Another interview by Rather describes these facts.
For seeing the film only once, Dan Rather recalled quite a few details with reasonable accuracy, which makes it all the more puzzling why he stated the president’s head motion following the fatal shot, the most important scene in the entire film, “...moved violently forward”.

In the first image shown of the limo you can clearly see that the driver of the limo has been edited out of the picture using white and black shadows. The passenger in the front seat is clearly visible but the driver is clearly blotted out. When you figure out why this picture was doctored you will figure out where the head shot came from.

@@timhorpo yes as a matter of fact when Orville Nix gave his film to the fbi it was much longer and showed the area behind the picket fence, etc. But when the fbi returned the film to the nix family the film was much shorter. The nix family filed a lawsuit against the government for the rest of the film.

The film Rather saw is edited to hide the stop of the car to allow a shot from the gutter. That is why the motorcycle screams up on the car. The car stops for the kill shot because 2 other waves of shooters missed. The umbrella guy signals team 2 that team 1 missed. Team 2 wounded JFK. So the driver stops for team 3 in the gutter. Because the kill shot came from the front they had to switch bodies for the coroner. But TIPPET, the body double, was also shot improperly by CIA. It did not matter because NOBODY can handle the Truth of JFK or 9-11. You? You will do NOTHING about it. You won't even tell your own kids.

He likely made a mistake because he was only allowed to see the film once so he could have remembered it very differently. The human mind tends to make you remember things differently than what had really happened. Jackie Kennedy for example doesn't remember going on the back of the car after the headshot.

Why the gap in z film between turn on elm to just behind the sign? Didn't see limo slow down in film as witnessed. Was zapruder trying to save on film? And did Dan ever explain the difference in the z film we saw and his report on violent foreword head movement he saw. Z film is suspect to me.

Agree, people's recollections of something they cannot go back and check afterwards can show major variations from what actually occured. Especially if what happened was totally unexpected and came "out of nowhere" (when Rather saw the Zapruder film he knew about the assassination of course, but he had no idea just what it would look like up close: the headshot still feels like a shocking moment when watched sixty years later).

Do people realize that Rather was describing a film he saw ONCE before reporting on it? Since Zapruder's lawyer would only let him see the film 1 time before selling it to the highest bidder (Time), he had to report it from memory. As someone who has a degree on communications and has worked in print and broadcasting, I can assure you that any good reporter will tell you that it takes an entire team to bring you the news. I suppose you’ll always go with what you see on the TV screen without ever considering all of the other pieces that bring it all together.

There were bone fragments, blood, and brain matter on the Queen Mary. A shot from the rear would have driven matter forward, not backwards. One of the motorcycle cops to the left rear of JFK was splattered with blood, he immediately thought he had been hit.

You can say what you want about the mistakes in Rather's account, but it's not at all difficult to understand why he said some of the more inaccurate things. He saw it one time and was recalling from memory. The violent snap back of the head makes it easy to understand why Rather may have misremembered or had the impression that it went forward.
If Dan Rather appears to be under duress, well, he more than likely honestly is. The film itself is shocking. Then you couple that with what he had been told about selling the narrative. Either way, who cares about that so called reporter. He moved ahead for his cooperation and really he became more a propagandist than anything else. The fact that CBS, a biased a news organization as any, would force him out is all you need to know about Dan Rather. It's funny watching him try not to cringe when he's interviewing old rock stars on AXS TV.

Dan Rather saw the video ONCE. He made a report based on what he saw that one time. He saw his head went violently forward. There is no back and to the left like in the movie but it doesn't matter. The head is attached and the bullet hit him in the right side/front. Whatever impact it had, the impact itself did not move the head in the opposite direction from which it was fired. No matter which direction you want to see in the film, the explosion of the skull fragment is what caused the movement. You can't rely on the force of a bullet as evidence which direction the shot originated from as if the bullet entering the body would push it in the other direction. It's instant, hyper velocity. Hollywood has conditioned you to think that way, because it looks cool when people are thrown backwards, but the actual physics of impact there will be no physical movement from the impact.
No conspiracy. The JFK movie is full of holes. Like how did Oswald know the parade route? Well it was printed in the paper weeks before. And they drew it wrong in the papers but if you knew that area you also knew you had to turn right there before the underpass. You couldn't make a right after the underpass. So that put Kennedy right in a sweet spot after they were forced to slow down. He could get his position first as he approached the book depository head on. It was one guy, he pulled it off. But Kennedy is really the one to blame. He was already getting death threats and he wanted to be paraded around in an open car like the Pope.
@Christopher L there is no explosion or damage to jfk's back of head. His head was turned to the right when he was hit. All the damage is at the front and side. There was no mistake in reporting. He got to see the film once. You can't really tell what direction his head is moving anyway and it wouldn't matter because bullet impact won't move the head. No missing frames no conspiracy. Just one man with a plan and a really bad parade route. You were able to get away with it then because security was lax but not anymore.
@Christopher L The damage is on the top right side of his head. The bullet entered the back and blew out the top/right side. There's a diagram on this on Wiki that can show it better. If you pause frame 313 you can see the blood explosion which is mostly forward, not to the back of the car if he had been hit from the front. Also if he had been shot from the front there would be an entry hole there in his skull as well as more damage to the back of head. The back of his head was not blown out, only the top/right side. Check the autopsy photos.
He was shot twice, first time when he is behind the sign out of view and the bullet entered his back. The 2nd shot missed him, the 3rd shot was fatal. The first two shots prove the 3rd shot also came from behind. It is far more plausible there was only one shooter. He had the perfect spot. Not on the grassy area in front of the car where they couldn't get a clear shot.
@Christopher L yeah I viewed them. The doctor said back of head and he said he saw brain matter. His account is not the same as x-rays. It's not that the doctor is wrong but he isn't giving specific locations. Back of head could mean anywhere. Kennedy was laying flat with his head turned on the table. There's a website that goes into all this in more detail and conspiracy theorists basically just deny the evidence. See: mcadams.posc.mu.edu/xray/ for information on the X-rays. The evidence is all there just have to read it. And keep In mind the film was recorded at only 18 fps. That would hardly be fast enough to show movement of the head by a bullet. Not that the bullet itself would move his head. It's likely the explosion of his skull caused an uncontrollable movement forward and back. I don't make any claims by that explosion from which direction the shot came from. You would not be able to determine that from the video. They can take the body if they want, they're Federal and I imagine Mrs. Kennedy wanted it too.

@Christopher L (sorry for the wall of text.) People make mistakes. He said back, he meant top/right of head. Pretty hard to fake autopsy photos which corroborate the skull fragments. The entire point of this video where everyone say's Dan Rather is wrong/lying because he said forward and in the video, his head does go forward and it also goes back. They point to that as evidence he was shot from the front, again not possible by impact of a bullet. From the grassy area behind the fence would be a much more difficult shot to get a headshot since he was in the back of the limo. If anyone knew the parade route, the best place to be would be in that corner room on one of the upper floors. You see him coming, get his position in the back/right seat. Then shoot after the turn, not before because you have people in front of him. From behind the fence you have two people in front of him, plus the windshield and possible glare from the sun. The first shot hit Kennedy from the back and that seems pretty obvious. So there had to be a shooter from behind. There's an entry wound and exit out the front. That's when Kennedy put his hands up out of view from the sign. The second shot missed, hitting the car. The first shot Oswald probably had Kennedy's head in his sights but he was too slow on the trigger and as the car moved along it ended up lower. Then the miss. Then he got the kill shot in the head. Adding a shooter to the front isn't necessary and it's more likely that someone would see the shooter there, a flash of smoke. Yes, there were some accounts of that. But no evidence was turned up there was a shooter there. The point is it would be very difficult to get a shot from the front and why would that even be needed? A half-way decent shooter, like Oswald had time to get 3 shots off. At least one of them could be fatal. He was a sitting duck in an open top car and they slowed down after the turn. Add to that Oswald attempted to shoot the governor outside his home. He was a whack-job. At that time in this country there wasn't all this back and forth political bickering. Kennedy/Nixon, very similar politically. Watch their debates from 1960. They never interrupt each other. They agree pretty much on everything, just disagreeing on how to get to the same goal. For a long time I thought there was a conspiracy too until I did research and I came to the conclusion, it was Oswald. Was anyone else involved? Who knows. There could have been a hander, like Russia or Cuba. But I doubt it because of how crazy Oswald was. He was a self-declared Communist leftist. Stephen King, a very intelligent guy and writer, came to this conclusion as well for his 11/23/63 book and later TV series. No conspiracy, just Oswald. I know readers were disappointed but if he saw anything that looked like a coverup or conspiracy, King would not have hesitated to use it in his book. I am glad he didn't. And it's this way with most of these conspiracies. I remember hearing about 2008 for the first time about an Inside Job. And I didn't believe it. Then I started reading about it, watching a few YT videos and I saw that Loose Change thing and then I was turned. I was all in with it. Then I stepped back and started doing other research about the events on 9/11 and found that a lot of the information that these sites that promoted Inside Job, were just plain false information. Especially that Loose Change feature. There were multiple releases on that too because every time there would be more and more evidence to debunk their Inside Job claims he was forced to keep editing and removing those false claims. And then the moon landing. Ha. I remember back in the mid 90's I saw a feature on this on Fox and they showed the flag waving around. Well, long story short I fell for it of course at first. The point is, there is evidence and facts. If you just want to throw out the facts and evidence because you think they're fake then you really can't trust anyone or anything. If that is true, then it would mean a different bullet entered the front of his throat but also didn't exit. What, two bullets fired from opposite directions, one into his back and the other into his throat and neither one exits? What would have slowed down the velocity of these two bullets sufficiently for that to happen? You've got two bullet's behaving more "magically" than anything ever attributed to the single bullet.

Oh dear, the Mac Wallace fingerprint myth again. In 1998 Nathan Darby claimed to have proven a "match" between a latent fingerprint found on a box on the sixth floor shortly after the assassination and a known fingerprint of Wallace's from 1951. But the majority of the fingerprint experts who have examined those two prints since have not agreed with Darby's original conclusion, so that by now it cannot be truthfully claimed that the fingerprint on the box is a "proven" print of Wallace's. In fact, it has still never been proven that Wallace was even in Dallas at all that day, much less that he ever went inside the TSBD in his entire life.
